The Willows Golf Club

Townsville, QLD | User Rating: Rate-3 (3.5) | Add A Review

The Willows Golf Club, home of the Queensland Masters and Townsville’s only International Resort Course.

The Australian golfing legend, Norman von Nida, at the conclusion of the recently conducted Queensland Masters tournament predicted, " if The Willows continues its rate of development it will challenge Lakelands on the Gold Coast as the best course in Queensland." (THE GOLFER, August 2003).

The benefit to members and guests at The Willows stems from the fact that they can play on a course that is considered to be of the highest standard, without having to outlay the fees and prices that courses of such standard normally command. In playing a round of golf at The Willows you will be challenged. Serious golfers can be challenged to test themselves in comparison with top line professionals, who, incidentally, averaged in excess of par in the Queensland Masters, while social golfers will be challenged to complete their round without becoming completely distracted by the vast range of wild life that abounds within the golf course.

This is a great course. Not for the faint hearted, there is lots of water around the course, so you need to be fairly straight. The fairways were in excellent condition and the greens were also great.

It is a relatively flat course so can be walked, however there are a number of holes where the walk from the green to the next tee is lengthy, so be prepared to walk a bit extra.

Green fees of $40 are very reasonable for the quality you get and it is certainly in better condition than Townsville or Rowes Bay. It is also a better layout.

One minor concern is that the course is up for sale at the moment, so you just wonder if the maintenance will continue to be kept at the level it currently is.

Willows has recovered well after the effects of Yasi. As Golferman stated it was a slow process but full credit to the greenskeeping staff for renewing it to it’s former glory.I hadn’t personally realised what a good job they’ve done until playing Paradise Palms that has a bigger budget and it’s poor form. A course that moreso asks for accuracy rather than length. Every hole has many options for you to approach the hole making it a challenge in course management and your game on the day.

Poor Willows is feeling the affects of being hit by cyclone Yasi. Plenty of trees down, branches on the ground, waterlogged bunkers and fairways. What a shame. I’m sure it was lovely.

It’s the wet season "shaynesnow", and it’s been an early start this year. It’s always going to be wet at this time of year.
I agree, they could pump some of the bunkers out. But there’s not much you can do when you frequently receive 100mm + in the space of 24 hours.

Nice course, short but distance is balanced by tight fairways and placement of bunkers and water. Some fairways were in very poor condition like the 18th which had large puddles of mud and the bunkers were unplayable. Some bunkers had over a foot of water and cane toad tadpoles, was waiting for a croc to come out and get me, very poor course management. Nice course to play and would play again but try to avoid the bunkers.

Since i regularly play at the Willows and love the course i find it hard to agree with the previous reviewer. The Willows is an interesting and challenging layout always presented in good condition. Obviously the previous reviewer is from the Long Drive Tour or wannabe Pro tour with his description of the course. The Willows is easily the best course in the region and has been improving steadily over the past few years. I have nothing against Rowes Bay or Townsville, but they simply don’t copmpare. I Highly reccommend the Willows for a round.

Rather dissapointed with this course. After reading all the reviews and then playing the course, maybe i had my expectations set too high.

course is short. no iffs, no butts. it’s short. most holes consisted of driver followed by SW or LW. and i think the longest Par 4 i played was only 460m. There isn’t much thought needed in the way of course management.

there are a few interesting holes especially 1 par 3 that you hit over water on the back 9.

If you want a challange play Rowes Bay or Townsville golf course.

PROS

  • due to rain only cost $9 to play 9 holes

Cons

  • short course
  • did i mention it's short
  • snobby members

Played all three courses in Townsville and the Willows is my favourite. The layout is well designed, The condition is great, and the price is reasonable. I especially like the GPS carts which are great for someone who has never played the course before. The course is definitely a challenge with many risk/reward holes. The greens are in great condition. The staff are helpful and informative. I would definitely like to play again when a chance arises.

PROS

  • Great Conditioning
  • Many Risk/Reward Holes
  • Good Design with varied hole layouts

Cons

  • Houses too close to Course and in positions that could be hit

Played a few times during recent holkiday. A great course, plenty of water hazards and generally very interesting, although the buildin g of new homes close to tees and fairways is now a bit”off puting!”. My only complaint is once again NO SAND in the bunkers, like plaing off of concrete, but I guess the answer to that is “Don’t get in the bunkers!”. Overall a great course.

For all the hype, my expectations were dashed. Not the club's fault, just my uninformed hacker mates who wouldn't know a merc from a commodore! A good members course but flat and a little uninteresting.

Heard it all? Best course in town(sville), best in NQ, best in Qld, best in Oz(huh) Well it may or may not be any or all of the above but The Willows is a top notch golf course.

The recent improvements add half a star to a challenging, interesting yet somehow relaxing round. The club attitude is tending to the pretensious but there is something to be genuinely proud of.

Water -plenty.

Trees - more than enough

Bunkers - not ridiculous

So much for the hazards.

The greens are constant and flag position varied. Stay on the fairway (what's new) and the score will reflect your accuracy. Will update after a few more rounds now that the Relic is back on course.

I played here for a few days at the beginning of June whilst on holiday from China. A great course, very friendly staff and members. A challenging and well kept course that kept me coming back.

This track is head and shoulders above anything in the area - fairways and greens are schmick.. layout is a good test of golf.. PLENTY of hazards. Most works seem complete now, rumours of a couple of minor hole changes but no works underway yet. Bunkers are attrocious but then again they're hazards and therefore supposed to be punishing.

this is a great golf club but why is it that all you people keep saying that it is in Townsville when it clearly says in the address that it is in Thuringowa City and as you drive along Ross River Road towards it there is a big sign that says WELCOME TO THURINGOWA CITY to me that tells me that i have left Townsville so come on people it is in Thuringowa City show some suport for the great city that allowed it to be built...Thuringowa

Played her for the 1st time last week and had a great days golf.

I have not been to townsville before so I have no comparison to the other local courses but we loved it.

I hack around at 20hcp and played resonably well but had heaps of fun.

Holes 13 and 14 were under construction (for the QLD masters) as were a couple of large new lakes right in the middle of the course. So Im sure when I visit agian later this year it will look totally different.

The young guys in the pro shop was helpful and the Members we met and eventually played with were really friendly. The Clubhouse is (as mentioned below)also a great feature of the Course

I Will be Trying Rowes Bay and Townsville GC aswell next time Im there but I Cant wait to get back and play this one again

In response to 1looby's review on the 11th January. Work on the new holes is expected to be finished in Feb / March 05. They will be even better then the new holes you mentioned.

Your comment about financial hardship is "hear say". These developments have been planned for years in an effort to turn the course into one of the best resort courses in this area. The course is getting there, these things won't happen overnight.

Come back after March, I think you will be pleasantly surprised.

On recent holiday, went and played with relatives who often attend same. Willows has a huge reputation in Townsville for some reason, propably because the Footy team "The Cowboys" often attend there. The club house and pro shop are very nice and well presented. The staff in both areas were friendly and helpful. For 18 holes, a cart will cost $20 and a round during the week is $16, both reasonable prices. The amenities on the course were sound, however, this is were the praise stops. Due to poor management of the club, it is reported to be in finacial hardship and as a result, areas of the course are being sold as housing development, subsequently increasing revenue. In turn, this is affecting the aesthectics and playability of the course. This affects about 5 holes on the course and in turn, makes them very uninjoyable to play. The rest of the course has nice fairways and greens, most of which are standard in terms of matters such as green speed, difficulty and number of bunkers, fairway width and undulation. The last hole has now had a huge lake put beside it on the right hand side. This is a challenging water feature, but also a beautiful one as well. Overall, it was an average day out with the course suiting average to good players. I will only play there again once the housing development has been finalised and the course conditions improve, espicially on those holes that are affected. Hopefuly management gets there act together because this has potential to be a good course.

I was a member of this club for 3 years before moving bck to Brisbane. There was a saying in Townsville - If you can play golf well at the Willows you can play well anywhere. Willows used to be Australia's longest course from the black markers and still plays long from forward tees. More recently the club suffered from poor managment and the course suffered accordingly. However over the past two years new Owner Don MATHERSON and his company have injected major funds into the course redesigning and building new holes. I reecently returned there and played the new back nine (originally the front) which included new 10th and 18th holes both of which run along the length of two large newly created lakes. The 18th is a par five which can be reached in two however to a green which is flanked by water and rocks on the right and soon to be OOB on the left. Other changes including new irrigation system are occurring and the shaping of the course was looking great. When finished I've no doubt Willows will be one of the best courses in North Queensland as it's greens are already the equal of more expensive resort courses.
