Cairns Golf Club

Set amid spectacular mountain scenery, the course features generous fairways and large greens making it player-friendly for members & social players. However for all major events the course proves a more challenging test. With the tees back and the pins tricky suddenly friendly becomes mean and the course proves that it can bite back.

I played course on Saturday before going up to Paradise Palms the next day. The course is extremely well presented & in good condition. As I was playing in a challenge match between my club & cairns I played with 2 members & they made me very welcome albight tryig to get me to play for money which I am not fond of. The course is reasonably tight & tough as there is plenty of trouble off line. The staff & members are very friendly & I will have no hesitation in going back there to play if given the opportunity. I must also state that I enjoyed my round at Cairns Golf Club much more than the next day at Paradise Palms.

Cairns remains a fun course with a few tropical holes which are as you’d expect water heaven. The course isn’t in the league of Paradise Palms or Sea Temple and from playing a lot around Cairns runs second to Half Moon Bay in presentation and value. This course is a good way to work out some kinks and refine your game prior to venturing to some of the more challenging course FNQ has to offer. A good round can be ruined at times by drunken fools in thongs and singlets driving their carts over and around greens as the course is woefully understaffed on weekends. The understaffing also leads to no drink cart on course on weekends which in the summer heat of the tropics is not only silly but also takes a lot of potential money from the clubs pockets.

Played here early in the year (Jan 07) and the course remains one of my favourites. This was probably my fifth or sixth game here over about ten years. (and no I don’t live in or near Cairns) Although they lost plenty of trees and suffered damage in cyclone Larry you’d hardly recognise any problems now, it all looks fine and tropical again.

More often than not when playing here the course feels quite heavy. Not sure whether this is just due to the fact that it’s fairly flat and in an area with naturally higher rainfall, or that the watering system is given too much of a workout, but at least there’s no worry about it looking brown. Plenty green and lush always.

Course is located fairly close to the city centre, south of the CBD. Pro shop staff always seem to be cheerful and helpful, and even charged me a reduced green fee as there weren’t many about that afternoon.

Holes I found interesting this time around were the par four 4th, which is a long slight dog-leg right with palms (esp. Pandanus) down the right hand side, and a slightly elevated green. Stay out of the trees if you want any hope of par. The 11th is probably the courses signature hole being a one shotter with a 150m carry over water to the green.

Green fees are $35 which is at the higher end of what you’d expect, but then it is touristy Cairns and the course is well kept.

I played Cairns golf course in July 2005 although I did not have my regular lefty clubs with me I was able to hire a set. I found the course enjoyable and the layout not too hard with hired clubs.

As a visiting 20 odd handicapper, I was welcomed by regulars and visitors alike. The course was in pretty good shape considering the lack of recent rain, still much greener than home in the Central Highlands.

Playing with someone with local knowledge is a definite plus. Tough enough to make playing to handicap a priority.

Enough diversity to use most clubs in the bag. Don't forget the Insect repellent for down the back.

A typical country course that's good value with freindly people and not intimidting where you need a bag of spare balls.

It had suffered from the heavy rains especially on the first two holes where a spring had now developed. Some bunkers needed a bit of attention and the greens were very slow with a few bare patches. Most courses (inc Cairns GC) we played were in various phases of greens maintenance (coreing, scarafying sanding etc) so this may had been the reason for the pace. It is a basic fun layout with the second nine sticking in my mind as being more scenic and challenging, requiring more thought in club selection and accuracy. Ocassionaly leaving the driver in the bag in favour of a 3 or 5 wood.

(As always I commence with a disclaimer - these are the views of a med-handicap golfer, so course asthetics and value for social golfers are my priorities when looking at a course, not how flash the clubhouse is or whether lackeys will carry your clubs from your car or not!)

Having played all of the courses in the Cairns area, this is easily my favourite. It doesn't have the difficulty of a specialised resort course or the views of a coastline layout, but in terms of a pleasant walk and value for money it can't be beaten. Perhaps it's just because every time I play there it's been one of those fine sunny days that make golf such a wonderful game - who knows?

The course is always in good shape but it is not too hard or too easy. Some holes are short enough to take an iron off the tee whilst others call for a well hit wood. Some holes have rough where you'll be lucky to find your ball where others are more forgiving; personally I like the balance. There are enough bunkers and permanent water hazards to keep everyone honest.

My favourite holes are the par 4's of 7 and 14. The 7th is a slight dog-leg right that requires a drive over or around a mound and some trees on the right hand side of the fairway. The second shot is then into an elevated green beside a lake. The 14th is a short par 4 with a dog-leg left, but the shape of the hole is such that it requires smart shot making. The drive should be aimed at or just left of a bunker set at the end of the open fairway. On both sides is serious rough and a tee shot hit too far will end up in the bunker or worse, in the rough. The second shot is into a small green protected by plenty of trees that place a premium on an accurate mid to short iron.
