Another of the what seems to be plethora of parkland resort style courses located on Sydney’s outskirts that compete for the corporate market. Whilst the design is interesting enough and it may have been very polished when it opened, the course has probably lost some of it’s lusture and focussed more on members. There is plenty of lakeside around this course but not overly intrusive onto the line of play. Good but not great.
Paid $40 for a social weekday round. (walking – the way golf is meant to be played…)

Finally bot the bullet and joined a Golf Club in NSW (following relocation from Melbourne in Jan 2011 and a 4+ year break from Golf) – ended up chosing Camden Lakeside.
Got a game in over the weekend and was very impressed with my choice – Pro Shop staff were absolutley fantastic and the course was well looked after – having played here back about 5 years ago i must admit my decision to join could have done with a trial round however felt comfortable with what the pro shop told me which was accurate to the finer detail.

Great Course, Challenging without being too brutal. Its the type of course where you don’t have to be super long off the tee but being able to hit fairways is important. The greens rolled great and were in very good condition.

i agree with the previous post in regards to the greens they where so patchy one green had over 100 pitch marks on it, suprisingly though they had very good speed but they need some loving, i found the fairways where good, a good fun day i payed $30 for my fees which included comp fees which i think is fair, bunkering is great( pot holes) love the links style,
i think the real issue here is the the change in re structure of the owners as it has recently changed im sure it will work out

Played here 7/2/11 and was disappointed. Greens were patchy (some of them should have been closed) and fairways were not in great shape. For $55 I expected more. Interesting layout but they need to start showing it some love!

Cons
Overpriced
Poor condition

Played this course a while ago and again yesterday – you can notice the reduced rough but I would maintain the course is still the best one in the the entire Macarthur district. The links style and picturesque scenery make for a very enjoyable round of golf.
Most holes have something difficult about them but you can still get pars and the odd birdie. Some previous reviews seem harsh and somewhat picky but the genuine quality of this course cannot be denied.

What have they done to this once excellent course.

Since Camden Valley closed and they have taken over this couse it has gone backwards.

I understand that members of different skill levels play here, but to cut the rough back, slow the greens down and not look after the fairways is ridiculous.

Its cheap to play there as a visitor in their open comps ($30) and if you want to get your handicap down, but if you are expecting the Lakeside of old you will be sorely disapointed.

Reading previous posts here about the course and how good it was, just shows how far it has deterioted in a few short months

Peter Thompson, the designer, would be shocked if he visited the course and saw what they have done to it

Shot 49 points. So obviously I love this course. Good for beginners and experienced the like. Just stay away from the rough. Its deep and houses some good sized snakes. Ill be back (tomorrow if I can chuck the sickie).

Played Saturday after all the rain and overall the course was in good condition. A little soggy on the 1st where the water runs down to the creek. Work being done around the 2nd & 3rd but no real affect to the course except for teep positin change on the 3rd.

FYI – Sausage sizzle finishes at 1.00pm which was dissapointing when we turned up at 1.05 and no Kranky’s!!

Played here today and loved it. A little work being done on the course adjacent to the 2nd hole. Looks like a new hole being constructed. Apart from that the course was in great nick.

Being able to have a proper warm up on a grass hitting driving range as well as a putt and chip before play makes all the difference.

Not an overly long or difficult course, however the rough makes up for it, penalising any errant shots.

The greens are in excellent condition; not too quick but perfectly true and quite easy with no large swales or breaks in them.

I’m generally about a 14 handicapper but I finished with 9 over and was pretty happy about it. Smart play avoiding large pot bunkers and water obviously the key in helping to keep score down.

$59 for 18 and a drive cart on a Monday – can’t beat it for value for a quality course just a 25/30 minute drive from Parramatta. Virtually no one on the course once we started the back 9 either which was great.

I’ll be back again soon.

Had a really relaxing and enjoyable round here yesterday. As described in earlier posts, the long stuff can be punishing so it’s best to avoid it where possible (I learnt the hard way).

Wonderfully manicured and as far as traffic goes, just a nice steady flow for a Sunday afternoon, exactly what you want really. Much respect to those who can walk the course, but I would still opt for the carts each time.

The course is challenging but also rewarding. I got some sound advice from a friendly member, to go one extra club when approaching the greens since the majority of them are all elevated. That definitely came in handy.

I believe you can still score solidly if you miss GIR, however your chipping/pitching best be on song.

I wish I lived closer to the course, however having said that I will definitely becoming back very soon.

Played Camden Lakeside as needed to play early Saturday morning and as not a member anywhere this is one of the few places you can get on. Pleasantly surprised by this course – an excellent day out – and given how far away it is, you feel like you have had a day in the country ! That being said, it was 45 minutes there and about the same back to the city. We played the white mens tees and the course seemed reasonably short to me and I am not a long hitter – I imagine a long hitter could carve this course up. Very distinctive Peter Thompson style links course with Pot bunkers and lots of reasonably short par 4’s – 320 – 340m. Course in very good nick. Probably the truest greens of anywhere I have played – they are also extremely flat, as they advertise, like old style courses. Very quiet on the course and we played in 4 hours despite waiting nearly every shot on the front nine due to slow group in front. All in all, very good course, good option if you want to get out of the city for a change – I’ll be back !!

Brilliant course, will definitely play here again.

The fairways are nice and receptive, but go off towards an edge and you could find your ball rolling into very thick rough. Even when you see exactly where your ball went you might not find it. An example was the par 5 2nd, I found 4 balls that weren’t mine but couldn’t find my own.

PLayed on a SAturday afternoon and it was not overly busy, with everyone playing a good pace in front. Could not fault the place one bit, will probably play one of their comps soon.

PROS

  • Greens were generally flat, but had tiny undulations that made you really think about your putts
  • Fairways had roll, but were still soft for the irons and wedges to glide through
  • Price, only $63 including cart!!!

Cons

  • Nothing

The course was in great condition given the fact that it looked like it had not rained out that way in years. Very fast greens and if you miss the fairways good luck finding your ball WoW crazy long thick rough. We played on a sturday and play was nice a fast only a very short wait at each tee we were able to play 18 holes in about 4 hrs. Nice club house and staff were fantastic will definitely return for another game.

Excellent course about 40 minutes from the Eastern Suburbs, easy to find. Although it was built in early 90s, it hasn’t dated and the pro shop and clubhouse are good. Fairways are long and the rough is tough, however the greens are very fair. A great course design by Thomson, Wolveridge and Perrett. Will definitely head back soon.

Given the rain this week, the course was in very good condition.

PROS

  • Staff were excellent
  • Course condition
  • Turf driving range
  • Pro on site next to the range, $25 lessons!

Cons

  • Nothing cited in today's experience

Camden Lakes is a very enjoyable course to play, with the local staff always welcoming and friendly.
We played on Queen’s birthday weekend and for the first time we found it incredibly slow and would suggest that more attention be paid to course marshalling and teaming twos up as fours to assist with a better flow of play.
We also found the course to be quite puggy after recent rain – but still a lovely place to play.

Apparently Camden Lakeside had not coordinated the booking with other group bookings which resulted in us hitting off at ther 10th hole .This created a back log when we attempt to complete the round commencing at the First.

Really good course, always in good nick with helpful staff. For some reason despite quite wide fairways I always manage to find the rough, or as per yesterday, the well-kept bunkers. Only other comment is to watch out for the bloody crows on the first, second, third and fourth holes – drove straight down the fairway on the second, only to see a big black crow flying off with my bright orange ball in his beak! Happened again on the third, and saw it also with three or four other balls from elsewhere! Watch out!!!

Played here today. Great layout. Green were true and no break at all. Have had some heavy rain in the last few days so that would explain the greens.

I play off 20 and did not find the course overly hard. You definitely need to think off some of the tees. I shot 6 over on the front and ended up with a 89. crumbled on the back nine.l Struggled with some iron shots with the super soft and squishy fairways due to weather.

I will play again and most definitely make sure a cart is hired.

I entered a competition on there webpage for 2 free rounds midweek and won. A free game is always good on a course like this.

Played here this morning. The course was not overly challenging as I am a player that can’t break the 100’s yet.

The harsh weather is doing no good to the fairways, but staff are doing well to keep it the best they can. The greens were great, I had one of the best putting games this year rarely going past a 2 putt.

Bunkers were rock hard and looked like alot hadn’t been raked in awhile. On the one bunker shot I had from 100m’s out, I ended up shooting past the green……. something I had never done.

I found the first hole abit of a bugger, after teeing off I went down the fairway to play me next shot…… only to be lost by the hundred balls from the driving range, maybe there needs to be a net of hedge to stop stray balls.

The biggest bitch of the day, but has nothing to do with the course or staff. On the 18th hole, my second shot hit the green and slowley rolled off the back towards the club house. When I went up behind the green to play my next shot, someone going behind the green took off with my ball….. what about ofrespect to others palying?

Great course, will be back in a couple of weeks to improve my score.

One of my favourite courses in Sydney, good challenging layout and nice helpful staff make for an enjoyable day out.

I would have to agree that the fairways are suffering a little because of the lack of water, but even so, the staff are managing to keep the course playing great considering the tough conditions.

Played here on Sunday, the course is nice enough, but I didn’t really think it compares well with other premium courses (charging premium green fees) on Sydney’s outskirts. One or two holes make you think, but on the whole a lot of the tee shots feel very similar, long drives with a premium on accuracy because of the rough, which is long enough that a wayward tee shot is basically a lost ball. The condition of the course was OK, but nothing to rave about.

From the very first hole at Camden Lakeside the golfer of every playing level is required to think. It is a relatively short par 4 of 341 m from the championship markers and, as such, the better player has the choice laying-up well short of a creek with anything from a 4-2 iron, or, attempting to blast it as close to the hazard as possible with a wood, setting up a 60 m pitch and almost ensuring birdie. The higher handicapper or beginner will have to make a similar decision about their second shot. From this beginning, the course’s demand for accuracy and strategy does not let up.

On the fourth hole, a par four of 386 m, the golfer must be accurate from the tee box, however, if there is to be any hope of making par or better, the tee shot also needs to be long enough so as the player is hitting a 7 iron or less into the green, which will deflect any incoming shot with a lower trajectory. Achieving such length and accuracy is not as difficult as some may think due the beautifully maintained fairways which are cut very short and feel somewhat firm beneath their otherwise flawlessly green exterior. They gave me an extra 20 m or so with the average flighted driver, 3 wood or 2 iron from the tee.

Greens are variable from hole to hole and this lack of consistency can be frustrating. However, the greens can be sussed out early by the observant golfer. On the large practice putting green, players will notice that the areas of putting surface exposed to the wind and sun will play a lot faster and firmer that those sheltered by the surrounding trees. The same holds true for the course. The 10th, 13th and 17th greens are relatively receptive and backspin was achievable with a full swing from 120 m or less, compared to the 2nd, 4th, 11th and 15th where it is nigh impossible to get anything longer than a 7 iron to stop in less that three bounces and a little run. Putting itself is easier to judge as the player can feel the surface beneath their (soft only) spikes. The greens are true and often contain large breaks as opposed to subtle ones giving those who trust their instincts the opportunity to sink them from long and short range.

Scoring opportunities often arise from placing the ball strategically rather than blasting driver at every par 4 and 5 at Camden Lakeside. The higher handicapper or beginner will love this course, provided their short game is up to scratch, because missing or laying-up to the rather ample greens on the ‘correct’ side often leaves a shot where the player has loads of green to work with and could play just about any type of shot. Moreover, the shot would be played off of the very short and beautifully manicured grass mentioned a moment ago. One of my playing partners continuously putted from off the green and to great effect, but really any type of shot, lob, chip, pitch, bump and run etc is completely possible.

The 9th is a superb par 3 of 180 m and once again tests golfers of all levels. It’s not that the other par 3s at Camden Lakeside are poor – they are actually all quite good – the 9th is just so well designed and pleasing to the golfer’s eye that all others, including the 3rd and 14th which are elegantly framed by lakes and bunkers, seem ordinary. The 9th could conceivably play anything from 175-190 meters depending on pin location. If the stick is back left, don’t even think about an aggressive line or attacking the hole unless you could get your 6 iron or less to fly the 180 m plus and land as soft as butter that’s been left out of the fridge. In all other instances of pin location, the right club is always required: being too short or too long results in tough up and downs, the hardest of which is from the back right bunker.

Something must also be said of the finishing holes of 17 and 18 which are amongst the toughest of the course. The 17th is enormous, up hill par four of 429 m which would challenge the very best. Play it down the left off the tee avoiding the fairway trap and solitary tree and judge the iron in accurately as its a tough up and down from the front or back. Best spot to miss is pin-high right. The 18th is a par four that dog-legs left around the largest of Camden Lakeside’s lakes, begging you to cut that corner a little too finely and end up wet or in one of the many fairway traps that line the lake’s banks. These holes really encapsulate the ethos of Camden Lakeside of beautifully constructed, yet natural landscapes, replete with multitudinous undulations, vast lakes and the signature long rough which captures many a stray shot.

The greens and bunkers were in very good condition, however the remainder of the course was fairly average. The fairways in particular were quite dry with a number of bare patches evident. It was raining quite heavily by the time we got to the 2nd green. We ended up walking off and getting a voucher and we will play again next week. I have played this course before and I think it is a true test of golf – you get rewarded for making good shots and you need to scramble well if you are not hitting them straight on the day. I also like that you can get a good tee time whenever we want to go down there, and they are not at all pretentious like most good courses in Sydney.

Played it Monday 04.08.08, a round with cart was $69.00. The colour of the fairways looked like it a drought had ravaged the course and had trouble tracking the ball from Tee offs. But all the greens were still a dark green and kept well. The green ran alot and was very challenging which was great. All the water hazards were filled up with water. Overall enjoyable course but wished the fairways were green instead of light brown colour.

I played here for the first time last week and I really enjoyed it!

If your not straight off the tee you can forget about getting a good score because once in the rough it almost certainly means that you’ve lost a ball. In a way this could be seen as a flaw of this course, the rough is just too unforgiving. Some of the bunkers are also very tough, so best avoided. The greens were lightening quick so a very good test of your putting.

Overall a hard test for the high handicapper but you can also see it as a good course to improve your game.

I've heard and read many reviews about Camden Lakeside, mostly positive remarks. However, there have been some concerns of late about how the current drought would affect the state of the course. It was very much a pleasant surprise to see the course well watered and in a good condition.

Playing off the white tees for a 22 handicapper, the course was challenging yet enjoyable. Seeing where the championship 'tiger' tees were located, I can see how the course could immediately pose a much higher degree of difficulty, in line with it's ACR of 73.

Greens were true and well maintained for a resort course. The tee boxes were OK but does have some room for improvement to make it better.

I would definitely go back again and look forward to the challenge of playing off the blue or black tees.

Play there every few weeks since March this year. I can say that the rain in Sydney this year has had little impact on this course, as it seems to always rain less down that way than it does up here in the city. It certainly has played dryer than Riverside Oaks of late.

I can only imagine how hard the fairways and greens will be in the warmer months...

Otherwise, a solid course and well kept. Some long holes and tight greens. Wind is a major factor and it really brings out its links style layout, providing a decent challenge. Decent tee times for social golfers available during the weekends.

play at this course regularily and have never been disappointed. great facilities and great for all levels of golfer even during dry months.

I like the design of this links style layout, and my favorite hole is the 18th where you are tempted to be aggresive but know safety is best.

a very busy course at times..

Played here couple times and the feeling is fantastic. Tee off boxes are gorgeous, greens are excellent, but fairway sometimes a bit dry.

They have special offers @ summer time $55 inc cart ! What a value.

Getting the perfect tee time could be a bit difficult 'coz the course are always busy.

Overall, it's a fantastic course and of course I will play again here !!

Camden Lakeside is an excellent course for it's type, which is a public course in a semi-rural part of outer Sydney.

It has some links characteristics, but stops short of being able to be considered a true links course. There are only a few holes where bump and run is an option. Many of the greens are protected in front by creeks or are elevated so that the only viable approach is a full iron in.

But let that not take away from the enjoyment. It starts friendly enough with a gentle four that doesn't need a driver from the tee (in fact driver threatens water hazards), then slowly builds up to the first test at the par 4 fourth.

From the Tiger tee you hit across the dam, a carry of at least 200m if you want to hit a controllable shot into the green. From this tee the fairway is oblique to your line of shot, and this makes for extra difficulty. Swales and humps astride the fairway make accuracy all the more important. The approach is across a creek to a green set into a hill, elevated a few metres above your hitting level. The green, like most on the course, has only gentle slopes, and generally the greens run quite true.

The run from 4-7 is challenging and enjoyable, and is arguably the best corner of the course in terms of golfing challenge.

The back nine's best holes are probably the last two. The 17th is a brute from the back tees, needing length from the tee and very accurate club selection and execution on approach. Quite straight, the fairway rises somewhat at 230m from the back tee, meaning only the longest hitters can reach the crest. If you don't make the crest you have a long iron at best to hit through a narrow neck of trees protecting and framing the entrance to this rather small green.

The 18th is a dogleg left around the lake, with the approach uphill and semi-blind to a large elevated green. Other writers have commented on the drive being a risk-reward shot whereby taking on the lake leaves a shorter shot. From the back tees unfortunately it's not much of an option, as low hanging brnaches from a lakeside tree impinge upon the line to take on the lake, something the course would be better off losing.

All up an enjoyable course given it's location.

This is a fun and challenging golf course love it. Links style golf with pot bunkers the fairways undulate and perched up greens.

Has some great par 3's 4's and a couple of gem par 5's

Really enjoyed this cousre would rate it... well worth the bucks it is for a round

Stay on the fairways and out of the water and you have a great day.. This is a very nice course and clubhouse is very nice also...

My favourite hole the #7 called Tranquility... Will be going back again really soon... Enjoy as I did...

A really great course to play, open and expansive with still a lot of troube to be found it is a real challenge of the black tees and yet still a good challenge of the yellow tees, worth a game for sure.

A fairly typical TWP course. It can be quite a challenge, but if you are striking the ball well it shouldn't cause too much trouble as the greenside bunkering is reasonably sparse.

The course gives you alot of room with plenty of options, but if you play smart you should avoid trouble.

The 18th is a nice finishing hole that gives you the choice of cutting off as much of the lake as you think you can.

The course is always in good condition & plays very fair. Designed in a links style, giving you many options on each hole. The greens are a nice quick pace & are very true. Off the back markers it can play quite long, but there are multiple tees on each hole for every level of golfer.

My main criticism is that I found the green complexes to be a little defenceless. Greenside bunkering often doesn't effect the line of play & although there are a lot of bumps & hollows around the green, they don't really effect the approach shot. The greens are quite flat, which Thomson did purposely, which takes away some of the thoughtfulness required for the approach shot. The course would play better if it was on the coast, subject to coastal winds, but I've lived in SW Sydney all my life & although we get the occasional breeze, it is nothing like on the coast.

The lack of pressure on the approach shot allowed me many birdie opportunities. The flat greens allowed me to knock them in. I expected more from a course rated so highly.

This is simply one of the best courses in Sydney! Always kept in absolute tip top condition and never allowed to brown off, this course is challenging even when you are in the zone.

The course layout is beautiful, the greens are extremly consistent. Just be careful of the rough! Once you are in the long stuff, you may never get out so keep it straight down the fairway.

This course has many holes which require a brilliant second shot or a layup with challenging water, and bunkers near greens.

In the south west of Sydney there are no courses that come close to Camden Lakeside, and only a few in Sydney altogether that are in the same class.

A must play!

I was there to witness the Jack Newton Junior Golf Foundation Day a couple of weeks ago. The back tees were in play and the course was awesome, a real test of golf. For the price, this is a sensational course in good condition despite the lack of water and has to be one of the best in NSW.

The par 4's are around the 400m, the 3's around 170m and the 5's give you a chance to pick up a birdie if you're playing well.

Go and test your game here, you'll love it.

The course is suffering due to the drought & the fairways are brown & extremely tight.

It is still a great layout though & is a challenge even when in poor condition.

A course that make you think on virtually every shot. Great fun and one of my fave's in Sydney. Always in good condition.
