As there hasn’t been a recent review done of late I thought I would comment on the winter conditions from my round on Friday 17/9/2010. This winter has been very wet and a number of highly rated courses have suffered. Victoria is one course that hasn’t and looks like it will be in magnificent condition come the Masters in November.
Starting with the greens – they were firm considering the rain but still quite quick. Quite a number of the greens have slopes and ridges that cause you to think quite hard on your speed and break.
Bunkers were almost perfect as I didn’t see one with signs of casual water being in or having been in them. All the bunkers I played out of were consistant (with exception of one)and with the light "fluffy" sand. The 18th fairway bunker on the left, in one area had a light covering of sand which was on top of a ’hard pan’ area.
The fairways were still showing their winter grass but they were always consistent lies and no wet patches or areas roped off. (as some other top courses, I’ve played, have had recently.)
I noticed, since I last played there, that a number of areas of rough just off the fairways, had a thick dark green covering of grass. I’m not sure if this has been a recent introduction, to toughen the course up for the up coming Masters, but it was quite thick and difficult to locate your ball if it went in there. I’m suspecting that these areas will be allowed to grow thicker and deeper later in the year.
The course greenskeeper staff were abundant and I’m sure in another month this will be 5 star. Very modern interior of the clubhouse with it’s original older outside appearence. Bar staff very accomodating and efficient.
On my assessment, it’s not far from the highest rating now and the best conditioned course of my past 5 rated.

Hi Fellow Golfers
Played at recent charity day. Drove thru the first hole, par 4 chipped back to 3 metres and missed the put for birdie.
Sorry that the greens are not good enough at present. Some greens 13 to 18 are not cut short enough (they are protecting the greens from heat). Heard after the game that afew of their greens were killed by 2008 summer heat and not enough water.
2, 3 and 4th holes are so similar. It like ground hog day! Sand in bunkers fly off when raking!!

Played here the day after the club championships. Fairways were like carpet but ugly in the rough. some of the best bunkering I’ve come across (filled with light, fluffy sand) An absolute pleasure to play.

Had the pleasure of staying as a house guest recently when in town for business and playing the course on a Saturday morning in their comp.
Everything about this place screams tradition and quality – both on and off the course. There’s no time sheet and no loudspeakers – just wander up to the starter on the day to be sent off. I arrived and was quickly paired with 3 very friendly members then on my way.
Despite the fortnight of heavy rains causing floods in most of Victoria the much heralded sandbelt drainage rang true with the fairways, greens and bunkers all dry, fast and true.
First hole belies what is coming as at 230m it beckons to be driven and screams “early birdie” but can easily deliver bogey or worse if not given some respect and forethought. What follows is sure to test and delight golfers of all levels with a balanced array of short and long holes. The greens are generally vast and contoured, the bunkers are shapely and consistent in their play and the course uses the lands attributes very well.
Sadly my form on the day wasn’t great but I still thoroughly enjoyed the experience and will be back to visit again very soon.

Played here a couple of times and also trekked around as pennant support a number of times over the past years.
Even when the couch is dormant there is a full cover of grass and the greens are always in sensational shape (and lightning quick). The bunkers are also almost always in great condition.
Fairly wide fairways but anything wayward can be punished (as you would expect on a course of this stature).
I would recommend that anyone jump at the chance to play here although make sure that you get plenty of practice in first because at the visitor prices you don't want to turn up and waste the round by playing like crap.

Played this the day after the PGA a few years ago. Unfortunately it poured but when you get a free game you battle on. Every hole is an adventure with heaps of bunkers and quick greens, which fortunately for us the rained slowed down. Tee trees punish any errant shot (if you can find your ball) and plently of length (off the championship tees) for a 22 handicapper. Superb clubhouse. don't know if I'd pay $160 for it but if you do it only once why not. Fairways were like hitting off carpet and no excuse for duffing any iron.

Had the pleasure of playing Victoria GC on Sunday 14 Aug 2011.
Even in the midst of a Melbourne winter, an excellent playing surface on all fairways. Greens were in very good condition – quickish (without being ridiculously fast). Bunkers all dry and in good condition (I unintentionally surveyed a few too many of those).
Afterwards went into the clubhouse for a couple of glasses of red wine. Great service and great company.
Well and truly a five star golf course and a five star experience.
