magnificent course went around for 18 holes. Beautiful fairways and greens and a fantastic club house. Worth going for a round

played this course on april 21 and what a disappointment. The fairways were unplayable – brown, with no grass at all on it. Shame as the layout was a good one. We also played many other Perth courses during our week here including Joondalup (by far the best conditioned), Vines, The Cut, Kennedy Bay, Burswood and Collier. Araluen was the biggest let down of the lot. Even with the discounted green fees, our group of 10 felt short changed, big time!

This course is fantastic! Played it last wednesday afternoon, with a member. We payed $21 for nine holes and managed to sneak in the other nine at no additional charge. It was the best $21 Ive spent to play golf in WA.

The greens are very large and true, the bunkering is intense around the greensbut well justified if you hit offline approach shots into the greens. The rough is very well maintained and gives you a bit of a chance if you spray a drive, unlike courses like Wembley and Marangaroo that are grosely unforgiving from the tee. Three putts are quite imminent, even if you hit green’s in regulation. If you are not close to the flags and not on the lower side of the hole in the 1st, 5th, 8th, 11th and 12th you could be severely penalised and find yourself well past the hole if not off the green with your first putt. This course reminds me of Joondalup, New South Wales, Cabramatta and Liverpool – it has it all! A true championship layout.

The pick holes for me were the par 4’s 3rd, 6th, 12th and 13th. The view from the 12th tee is amazing, down to the green with Perth city and the darling ranges as a backdrop. A number of long par 3’s I feel are a big strength of this course, in fact the first is 220m long, well bunkered and with a huge water hazard left. The 1st, 9th, 11th and 16th are all par 3’s and are well over 160m.

This course has fantastic reward for good shotmaking, putting and strategy. It is in my top 5 best ever courses played for sure. It is a must-play for anyone who visits Perth. Despite not being a member, I have a few contacts now to get on for invitational days.

PROS

  • Great layout, undulative, true large greens, comprehensive bunkering, strong par 5's, 4's and 3's. Full value for good shotmaking.

Fantastic golf course and great value if you’re looking to join a private club. Has a good variety of long and short holes and well thought of bunkering. The greens all have subtle breaks and are very slick on a warm day.

Tucked away in the sleepy suburb of Yokine is one of Perth's best private courses. The club has just hosted the 2004 Western Australian PGA Championship so it's worthy of a mention. Opened in the same year as other more well known courses in the area (Mt Lawley and Lake Karrinyup) this par 70 course is very challenging with large trees guarding tight fairways and tricky greens.

The course intimidates early with the first hole, a 220m par 3 with a lake down the left and driving range on the right. The most spectacular hole is the 12th ( imagine the 16th at Araluen, but a par 4). Commanding views of the city of Perth from one of the highest points in the metro area. The hole challenges you to pull out the big dog and have a go at the well bunkered two tier green. If the Freo Doctor is in, chances are you are going to be launching the pill onto the road unless you aim well right.

Clubhouse is old world charm with a good sprigs bar and fine dining is available for lunch and dinner (we did both on a Friday arvo). Well stocked proshop with all top brands.
