I decided to play this course after a couple of years away because I’m thinking about becoming a member here. Started off on the back 9, as the Holden Scramblers were teeing off on the front.

Nice easy opening hole on the back 9, that progressively got more difficult. Whilst Wynnum is not an overly long course, the strategic use of dog legs and bunkering and water hazards still forces you to work hard on your course management and some of the short par 3s, demand absolute distance control with the right club or penalties await. All in all a very nice course and thanks to the friendly club member who joined me towards the end of the front nine and shared some valuable local knowledge.

I didn’t get 18 holes in due to starting late but there seems to be a good mix of short and long par 3s. Some of the shorter par 4s can be reached from the tee in one but there are well placed bunkers to make the shorter holes tougher. Pro shop staff were friendly. The course is in great nick. I will return at a later date to fit all 18 holes in

I played Wynnum for the first time a week ago.

I did not play well, but I can’t blame the course for that.
The fairways are in immacualte condition and the greens are good, although I could not read them at all.

I managed to catch a few bunkers and was very disappointed with the lack of sand; one had stones in the bottom.

I pride myself on my bunker play but I simply couldn’t get out of these.

I will certainly play again although if the bunkers have not improved, I’ll lift the ball out of them.

Wynnum, to be blunt, is a mediocre course. The condition of the course was very bad – very dry, very slow greens and some unmowed fairways.

Course aside, the staff were very friendly and welcoming. However, at the end of the day, you don’t pay for friendly staff, you pay for a nice golf course. While the green fees were competitive, this was reflected in the quality of the course.

Overall, I’ve visited enough courses to know that Wynnum needs some serious reworking to compete with other premier courses in the Brisbane region.

PROS

  • Very friendly staff

Cons

  • Poor course condition
  • Nothing too eciting about the course

It has to be said.. it is not a great course. The overall condition of the course is not really up to decent standards (lots of long stalks around fairways, greens very slow). Above all, my round was ruined by EXTREMLY slow play, mainly due to the length of the course and the wierd layout of holes (eg, lots of consecutive par 3’s). I don’t know what people see in this course, because I found it rather ordinary.

Finally got around to playing Wynnum. They have a very good value comp on Friday mornings, $20 to play for visitors (must have an AGU handicap).

Nice course, obviously limited by the small parcel of land it is on. They have done a pretty good job considering what they have to work with and the result is some unusual configurations with consecutive par 3s and par 5s for example. A short course (par 70, ACR 68) but it has been tightened up by narrow fairways, particularly on the front nine, and the tree lines tend to be punishing. Also plenty of OOB and water hazard risks that often come into play.

I struggled a little as a first timer on this course with the lack of distance markers, but I guess you would get used to it and there is always a GPS option.

An honest course and good value for the Friday comp. Very short but that may suit some that struggle on the 6,000m+ course.

They had preferred lies on when I played there and yes it was a bit dry (we have had good rain since) but honestly the course was in pretty good nick considering.

I believe they cored the greens 2 weeks ago (the monday after I played there)so it will be a few more weeks before it will be back to its best.

I would have to agree with alot of the reviews for this course. As a 6 handicapper I found it quite short but as I hadn’t played here before I still found the wrong spots to hit it. Edges of the fairways were to be expected, a little patchy, but all the fairways were soft under foot and very green and lush. Greens were very receptive and although hard to read at times, rolled quite well and were fairly fast. Staff were all very nice and friendly and we got a free stubby holder with our first beer at the 19th. All in all a very nice experience and would play again if in the area.

Given that this is a ‘suburban’ course, it is quite good. For such a course, I reckon it deserves better than the 3.5 star rating. On the front nine there are two back to back tedious holes but other than that most holes present a challenge if you spray it. Given the drought, the fairways and greens are in superb nick. I wouldn’t suggest travelling from a fair distance to play this course, but if you’re in the area and have the clubs in the boot, it’s well worth dropping in.

the course is positioned on land which should only fit a decent 9 holes. heres hoping they can take over the adjoining football ground/park one day! the course has improved over the past few years with gardens and tree planting. some very boring short par 4s which could do with some fairway bunkering or well placed trees. theres no holes which could be called great here. greens are small and with subtle breaks which can make it hard to make a putt. games can be slow. many players from other courses can shoot good scores here but are murdered by the cruel ccr which makes local 4 handicappers shoot par rounds to play even.

Wynnum is very well looking after and have excellent fairways very lush and green. The course is fairly short but there are a couple of long par 4s that make up for the lack of 5's. Bunkers protect the par 3's well so be sure to @!#$* straight off the tee! I had a slow round though which was the only downer for the round.

most holes are very short but challenging...layout is awsome but the chipping green is like a kilometre away from the clubhouse...hazards are very challenging but it very easy to score a low number of shorts...even if its not your best day you are still likely to shoot your average game..

Wynnum Golf Club would be approximately 75 years old and is avery compact course that is pretty short (5400m off the back) but with small target greens and narrow fairways, the long hitters will struggle if they spray it.

You will find some unique holes like the 110m par 3 6th, which gives a downhill wedge to a small narrow green deeply bunkered short and right. This starts a stretch of 4 holes back into the Moreton Bay breeze which makes golf very pleasant most of the year.

There are 3 par 5's that most A graders can reach for 2 with as little as a 7 iron, provided you keep clear of the water.

The greens are usually well paced and consistent, hold well and are generally flattish. In winter they're overseeded with a winter grass that makes them very playable. The bunkers unfortunately aren't as good, but the club say that's a priority for this year.

Service there is excellent and the staff and members would be the friendliest around town.
