The 6300 metre, par 72 (ACR 72) Yowani Golf Course is regarded as one of Australia’s finest inland courses, reflecting over 50 years of careful development.

The highly rated championship course was designed by James Herd Scott in 1954, with several holes redesigned by Cooper Nagle and Associates in 1978. The course is an excellent test for golfers of all abilities on gently undulating, fully watered, tight, tree-lined fairways with two picturesque lakes.

The inward nine is acknowledged as one of the finest back nine holes of any course in Australia. It is no coincidence the course’s signature holes are found tucked away in this fine test of golf. It is a golf course that guarantees something special to all players.

Played here last weekend and it was average. Grass growing in the bumkers, hit one down the centre and be punished with a lie on the dirt. Greens were as hard as concrete. Nowhere near as good as Gungahlin Lakes!

Very demanding off the tee. Yowani certainly places a premium on accuracy. Several tees have been extended so the course is far from short.

Unfortunately I played this after they have cored the greens, and like most courses failed to tell me this when booking!! It could have ruined the day, except for the remainder of the course. Nice tight fairways, lovely tees, a beautiful place to play. I would like to play again with greens in tact.

i told you i would be back after i had played the course with the greens not being cored .well i played there yesterday and the greens were great , a little hard due to the lack of rain but fast and true ,the course is in great condition and should be a must if you are in canberra playing golf

Played this a little while ago just after the greens had been cored so will leave my thoughts on the greens until I can play them when they are at their best but I have to say the rest of the course was tremendous, a really enjoyable day, some really long and tough par 5's with some challenging par 4's and the 16th par 3 back into the wind is a test for anybody, if you are down in canberra you wont be disappointed with this course.

I played my first golf on this course in the 1970s wagging high school. I thought it was good then but I played it again last year and I would have to say the greens were the smoothest and best manicured in Australia. The front 9 is the scoring nine, wide fairways and big reachable greens. The only really difficult hole is a 190 mtr par 3.The back 9 has everything. Long water carries, elevated tees, uphill holes, sloping greens and big bunkers in front of the greens. My wife was not a big golf fan until we stayed in one of the Yowani chalets. She had a lesson with Tony Riches on the practice range and played a few holes and was blown away with the beauty of the course. We live in Derby WA and play on the magnificent newly developed Boabs course. My wife has dropped her handicap from 45 to 29 in 18 months. She is now totally addicted which means more golf for me. Thanks Yowani and thanks Tony.

Don't get me wrong I do like this course, but every time I play it now I find it quite frustrating to play. The course seems to have changed since last I played it and the ambience of the place seems to have gone.

Tight fairways and heavily treed rough doesnt interest me. Having to take an iron out of the bag on the tee on a long par four doesnt excite me too much.

I played this course some years ago now and again in the last couple of years and I can say it has deteriorated quite significantly. It's still nice, but nowhere near what it was.

Ten years ago the course seemed like a resort in the country, now it seems like an average suburban course.

I can't remember quite correctly but there now seems to be a lot of houses surrounding the course and a busy highway along side that I don't remember being there. And I can honestly say I thought the par five 15th at the back of the course was a completely different hole. Wasn't there a driving range out there?

Am I going crazy?

Yowani is a long, tough course, that requires length & accuracy off the tee, & considerable thought to strategy.

The front nine eases you into your round with a short par 5, mid par 4 & a short 3. There are some good par 4's, with the 5th probably being the best on the front nine with a difficult uphill approach. The front nine as a whole plays solidly, without giving up any easy scoring opportunities.

The back nine also starts with a par 5, but this time longer, at 517m. From this point on you need to be on your game.

11th (Par 4 327m) The lake is right in front of you, cutting off the direct route to the hole. You will want to carry it, but you'll need to fly the ball 250m from the back markers. The high lip of the bunker in front of the green means you can't see the base of the flag for your approach shot.

12th (Par 3 184m) The green, bunkered front on both sides, taked only a straight shot. I hit a 4 iron to the back fringe & had a real nasty putt coming down the slope, so be carefull with your club selections.

13th (Par 4 407m) Slight dog leg left with the green tucked into th etrees on the left hand side. A long drive down the right side of the fairway is needed for a clear shot to the green.

14th (Par 4 382m) Straight hole, but extremely tight off the tee. Take whatever you need to make sure you hit the fairway.

15th (Par 5 470m) Another tight hole & a great par 5. Large fairway bunkers make the drive zone very thin (about 10m wide), so it is best to play short of the bunkers. The hole bends to the right for the second shot with the green tucked into the trees on the right. Lay up to the left of the fairway for the best approach to the green.

16th (Par 3 168m) Pin positions on the right hand side of the green need a full water carry. There is a bit of room on the left hand side. Two bunkers at the back look nasty, but are raised a couple of feet above the green so as only to catch the grossly over clubbed shot. A little too much club should see you safe.

17th (Par 4 350m) Tee shot hits to the fairway at an angle, so there is a temptation to bite off too much. The approach shot must carry water with even the safe line protected by a bunker. Don't take too much either, as O.B. is just over the back right of the green.

The 18th is a solid par 4, that has a tight fairway & a raised green. It needs a little extra length though. At 334m it is too easy to play safe off the tee & still has a wedge into the green.

All in all, Yowani is a great test of golf & good value as well.
