Played 18 here on the 15th Oct for the first time.
What a beautiful course! Tee’s, fairways & greens were all lush and green. Very picturesque course. The layout of the course is great, lots of dog legs, a bit of sand and lots of hills. The service in the pro shop was very warm and welcoming too. The greens were fairly slow and the game did take a while due to some slow play infront of us. Overall a great game and a very enjoyable day. Highly recommended.

PROS

  • layout & scenery
  • fairways & tee's
  • service
  • value for money

Cons

  • greens were very slow
  • bunkers were low quality

Played here on Aug 28 using a Scoopon voucher that got me a round for 2, a cart and a meat pie+ drink for $45. And thank god the cart and the grub were included because the course was no good to play on.
- Fairways: Extremely wet
- Greens: Grossly under-maintained. I have played courses with fairways that were better than these.
Felt quite dissapointed after having driven 1.5 hrs to get to the place.

PROS

  • Interesting layout

Cons

  • Wet fairways
  • Horrendous greens

Played on sunday (post AFL grand final replay) and the course was almost empty, probably "due to hangovers". Despite the warm day the course was faily well watered due to recent rains, so drives lacked some run, and iron shots into the green stopped and dug in.

Emerald is tree lined and on some holes offer narrow chutes for driving, so accuracy is a real must unless you like the thrill of danger as you venture into the forest looking for your errant ball (snakes are known to be around). As a premium is placed on accuracy off the tee on most holes, the driver can be left in the bag on numerous par 4s where position is much more important.

The course itself is always picturesque, however if you look closely some signs may appear, that show it is in need of a makeover.

Further maintenance of the course to eradicate weeds, smoothing out of greens and tees, and fixing up the odd bare patch would all assist in this regard.

Having said that though I do love playing Emerald as I know it will usually be the one course on a Sunday where you can always get on for a game, and once you drive down the widing road and turn over the bridge to enter the course carpark, you can just feel yourself smiling as you know you’re in for a great time.

I have played up at Emerald past few months once a week, and will continue to do so. This is a Tree lined (Park) Course, with many different challenges on each hole.
The par 3 13th is the best looking, while the Par 4 5th the most challenging.
Its presents well all year, however in Summer it can be quite hot and the greens on some joles very fast.

This is not a links course as you would find on the Mornington peninsula, it’s a "hills" course. Having played there regularly since Feb 09, it is always a pleasure. During winter there are a few bare patches of red clay that can be a little slippery and after heavy rain the greens can be a bit soggy, but 99% of the time it’s a great course with well maintained greens and good tees & fairways. All the holes are different with tremendous variety. Yes, there are hills but after you go up one you are down the next or at least level, so it’s not all that tiring. Carts are available if you don’t want the pleasure of a lovely walk.
Off the fairway and you’re into the woods, but most times you will still find your ball. Beware of the slope on some greens.

What a fantastic, challenging and picturesque golf course. one of the very few golf courses i have played where you turn the corner to the next hole and you say wow! Can say nothing but good words about this facility club house is dated but i think might be heritage listed and good value for money.

Our Group of 8 have this as part 1 of our King of the Mountain tournament (other course is Warburton). We have played here the last 4 years and will continue to return.

Played 2 days ago and the Greens are in fantastic condition. Some of the fairways need better cuts from the rough so you can see from the tee, but overall the course was in good knick, with the recent rain in Melbourne.

Bunkers need plenty of work. They need sand!! Some bunkers (especially the 18th) are able to be putted out of, but the 2nd hole bunker was terrible. considering you have to hit over a lake to make the green the bunker at the back is in play and should be maintained better.

The club was (and most likely still is) struggling for survival a few years back. Maybe the numbers attending the course make it hard to maintain it to a top standard.

The course is challenging for the INTERMEDIATE golfer, it will frustrate top level golfers who love the sand belt courses. But it is fun for those who play every couple of weeks. Miss the fairways you are in trees – end of story.

PROS

  • Great for Social groups
  • Perfect for beginners to intermediates
  • Best holes - 2nd, 8th, 9th, 11th, 13th and 18th

Cons

  • Bunkers have little sand

Played here just over a week ago and wasn’t impressed mainly due to all of the "great" feedback I’ve read below and what I then expected when I arrived. It’s a lovely drive from Melbourne and the town of Emerald is a beautiful place with great bakeries and cafes to stop at on the way.

Let me say that this could be a fantastic course if properly maintained, or maintained at all. Fairways were a mixture of dirt, weeds, or long patches of grass. If some cases you had no idea where the fairway starts or ends.

The setting of this course is beautiful, reminded me of walking through the Otways on the Great Ocean road. Beautiful flora and fauna, its a shame the course has been let down by its owners. I guess for the price you could say its a decent little course but for any golf enthusiast its not worth the 50 minute trip from Melbourne. You’re better off heading down the Mornington to be honest. The pro shop is terrible however the staff were some of the most friendly and accomodating people I’ve met. They were fantastic as is anyone who lives in the town of Emerald.

The greens were as shaggy as a 1970’s carpet and varied from green to green. The tee boxes were also brutal….I could go on and on. Also the number of flies that surrounded you while trying to sink an important putt was amazing but thats not the courses fault. Bring your bug spray!

PROS

  • Nice scenery

Cons

  • Course in bad shape
  • Below average, not worth the drive from the CBD

A hidden Gem of a course. About 50 minutes drive from the city this course although short will test golfers of all standards. The holes are interesting to play with some spectacular views. The par 3 13th and 18th are especially fun to play. The fairways are very tight and wayward drives can quickly turn into big scores. Whilst the conditioning of the course is no royal melbourne you will certianly walk away from a very enjoyable and interesting round of golf.

If it were possible, Emerald golf and country resort should be framed and put on display for the world to admire. A breathe of fresh air, picturesque views, but on top of this, a more than modest golf course even the serious golfer will find challenging.

In the heart of the Dandenong’s (roughly 45mins from the CBD), the golf course is located in the little known township of Emerald. The course boasts a 90 year old heritage, and unlike inner suburban golf courses where trees are lacking and holes are jammed packed together (resulting in rewarding stray tee shots) Emerald is quite the opposite. The skinny fairways and thick tree lines continuously puts your driver to the test hole after hole, and the challenging greens are placed strategically in order for your approaches to be pin high perfect.

Although not a particularly long course (interestingly split 12 and 6), the vast hills and slopes make it more than enough to contend with. I most enjoyed the par 5 11th, Mr’s Mac’s chunky beef pies after 12 holes!, and the entire entourage of par 3’s (especially the 13th and 18th). Though be aware, for the ‘weak’ hitters and faint hearted alike, make sure you pack your hybrids as you will definitely demand them for some of these challenging par 3’s.

An absolute pleasure to play, do yourself a favour and check out this gem of a course!

Located only a short scenic drive outside metro melbourne, emerald is an untainted gem that should be filed under “must play” for all serious and social golfers alike.

The fairways are thin, the trees thick, the greens small but above all else the aesthetics are more than just a little pleasing and the course never boring. Bring your mates who tink they are the second coming of Tiger Woods and it just may turn their flat track 79’s into 90+’s, as they quickly become: Tiger-in-the-Woods.

It’s hard to pinpoint favourite holes, on such a magnificent course, but if I were to, I’d say the post card-esque 2nd, 11th, 16th and 18th were worth the minimal greenfees alone and when the friendly pro shop staff serve you with a smile, it’s hard to not feel like you’ve gotten away with daylight robbery in paradise.

So don’t let the location fool or deter, if you want a true test of golf, without the dipleasure of fairways bordering freeways and loads of obnoxious staff-bag wheelers, take the trip to Emerald. You wont regret it.

I was introduced to golf in the 60’s at Emerald Golf Club, had my wedding reception at the Clubhouse in 1982, remember my father as President in 1972, and my mother as madam Captain the same year.

I recently sojourned for a round after the passing of both my parents, and though I feel the “club” has moved on, the beauty and layout will trouble to be challenged by most courses in this country.

When we played in the 60’s, it was a short, 9 hole course, then, I think, expanded to 13 holes in the 70’s, and expanded to it’s current 18 hole layout in the 80’s.

Being clay-based, the fairway lies can be challenging, but I adore the bell-bird applauded drives, the necessarilly accurate irons, and the true greens.

The 2nd is the ultimate short-course challenge, the 8th is a hoot, the 11th is a hole from Heaven, the 13th (the original 1st)is a haven for platapus’ in the creek, the 16th is a gambler’s dream, the 18th is a classic par 3 finishing hole.

Visit this course and “enjoy the serenity”.

Emerald Golf Club is a hidden gem. Located an hour east of the Melbourne CBD, it boasts some of the most picturesque holes I've seen in a golf course in this country.

The par 5 11th is my favourite - as you come over the hill after a long tee shot, you then hit your approach towards the green over a long valley, with the mountains in the distance providing a magnificant backdrop. The par 4 2nd is also a ripper - while drivable in one (for the long hitters), the pond right at the front makes it a big gamble. A couple of the par 3s are also special - while I'm usually a bit miffed with a par 3 to close out the round, the 18th here is a long way from disappointing.

There is no doubt that my favourable impression of the course is based largely on its aesthetics. You can really lose yourselves in the environment and forget that you're only an hour from the city. But that is not all that this course has to offer. Many of the fairways are tight and the greens small, making precision play a must. There are numerous short dogleg par 4s which require you to place your ball rather than just banging it up the fairway. While short in comparison to most modern course lengths, it is a 'smart' course which will punish you if you're off your game.

Unfit golfers be warned - this course is very hilly - your calves will know they've played a decent game by day's end. But despite the course's ability to tire you, it will also treat you to one of the best rounds of golf you'll find in a public course in this state.

Emerald Golf Course is a picture, luring the unsuspecting Metro-Golfer into a true test of Golf, up in the Hills of Melbourne. The Course demands that you bring your 'A' game, for a wayward shot will be severely penalised. They have had a Pro-Am recently for which the Pros were all tested with some scores in the 80's.

Except for the 1st, 9th, & 11th Holes the fairways are very tight and you best brush-up on playing straight 3 or 5 woods or even Iron tee-shots...rather than Driver...otherwise bring a bag of balls...

Par Threes...are testing...the 13th & 18th cross over a severely sloping gorges with a creek at their base...

The 15th is a drivable Par 4 - but be warned - Take 4 or 5 Iron from the tee or a 6+ can happen real quick!!!

A 4 putt on the 16th green is not uncommon and can swing games with a slippery downhill sloping green...

My favourite hole is the 17th - with a row of Pines lining the fairway and a slightly elevated tee area to a tight fairway and tighter green - Not quite Augusta but close!
