Beaconhills Country Golf Club (Lakes)

IN: COURSE DIRECTORY | REGION: Melbourne, VIC | USER RATING: (2.5) | Add A Review

At all times of the year the towering gums and tree ferns which line the fairways, and the ever present songs from the hundreds of bell birds, make for a wonderful golfing experience.

For Spring visitors the vibrance of the season is reflected in the splashes of colour from Camellias and Rhododendrons, whilst an Autumn visit rewards golfers with splendid visions of unforgettable leaf colours, toned by the crisp, clear morning air.

Played in March 2005. Our group of 4 each paid $33 dollars and none of us felt that the course justified the fee. We enquired after the round and found that the courses alternate for the members with the other course available to the public. On the Sunday that we played, the greens had not been cut since the previous Wednesday, the tee mounds had been sanded and the grass growing through was 2-3 inches long. One of the greens was in the process of being relaid with instant turf and another green had a huge trench running completely across the front.

Whilst maintenance and GUR is to be expected, none of the the above was disclosed to us by the pro-shop. Not even when my partner specifically asked them about the course.

Very disappointing.

For first impressions this is a GREAT course, rustic country charm, well-stocked pro-shop, friendly members.

At $29 a round for green-fee playing members, it's probably a little more than you'd pay at your usual municipal haunt but it does represent excellent value

Most tees provide excellent vistas across well manicured fairways to high-quality greens. Definitely above par.

There seems to be quite a run of low-300 par 4's which tends to get a bit same-ol-same-ol, but the scenery is still great.

The absolute highlight of my round was "Chookas" halfway hut at the start of round 10. A well stocked hut of goodies INCLUDING BEER! and a good range of hot food. "Chooka" even puts in words of encouragement after you tee-off. Nice touch!

Paving...there isn't any. Long gravel driveway up to the clubhouse, and lots of gravel cart paths. Makes for a dusty day (unless it's raining).
