Capricorn International Resort, Central Queensland’s premier golfing resort (36 holes) is located on the Capricorn coast at Yeppoon. It is one of the few resorts in Australia which can boast two international standard golf courses.

The old course, now eight years mature, is a classic Thompson/Wolveridge course. The old course offers a relaxing game to all who play it. The course has its wide and forgiving fairways with only 44 bunkers, and the fairways wend their way through magnificent stands of trees in a sub-tropical setting. Although there are not many bunkers, they tend to be quite large and have a habit of enticing many golfers’ balls to visit them if they are not as accurate as the course requires.

The two golf courses are set in 22,000 acres of natural bush and wetlands. Early morning tee shots are always played to a gallery of native Australian birds (149 species at last count) whereas your afternoon shots must take into account the regular balmy tradewinds.

This is a great layout, more traditional than the Championship course, which means you can see any trouble. It is in excellent condition.

We played on a Tuesday morning and got around in just over 3 hours walking with no-one in front of us. Apart from the walk from 1 to 2 and 8 to 9, both through a tunnel under the road, it is a straightforward walk.

The fairways are in good condition with a good even coverage of grass, maybe they hadn’t mowed it for a couple of days when we were there as it was almost too thick. The greens are in perfect condition and roll beautifully, just a little slower than you would expect.

There are two sets of tees for Men, the Blue tees are my recommended set, par 72, rating 72. The white tees are a bit shorter, still par 72 but rating 69. For women it is a par 72, rating 70.

If you walk the course green fees are $25, so excellent value for money for the quality of course played. If you take a cart it is $75.

It compares favourably with most Resort courses and we preferred this layout to the Championship course.

One peculiarity is that the card is presented in yards, not metres, so you need to be able to do a conversion or take a rangefinder to know your distances. Well worth a game

I played the resort course yesterday and I loved it. Unfortunately the day was almost ruined by extremely heavy rainfall which had been persisting for the whole week, but because this course is a sand based course the water soaked right through once we got out the course did not even feel wet. In fact the greens stayed slick and fast. I actually prefer the resort course to the championship course as I think it is a much nicer layout. There was a bit of grass work on one of the holes but overall the course was in fantastic condition and the rain has really helped green it up. There was also water in all of the water hazards which was not the case on the championship course when I played that last year

PROS

  • great layout
  • slick greens
  • well maintained

Played the Resort (Old) course today and at $25 it represents fantastic value. The course is in terrific condition having only just hosted the Capricorn Classic Pro-Am and we played from the plates as the course isn’t the longest you will encounter.

While the course is reasonably generous in its’ fairway widths, the size of the greens and the furry rough just off the greens make it a good test.

The only negative for the day was the lack of interest shown by the golf ops staff. Outside of taking your money there was no direction, made worse by not being able to get a beer in the upstairs bar on finishing at 1.30pm. Cannot understand this lack of customer service.

PROS

  • value for money
  • couse condition

Cons

  • lack of interest by golf ops staff

Played the Resort course May 17 and found it in acceptable condition but no where near as good as the Championship course. Fairways were a little patchy in places and the greens were a little bumpy and inconsistent speed wise but nothing really to complain about. This is a TWP designed course and is another TWP disappointment which has wasted some beautiful sandy based rolling coastal terrain. The setting is lovely but the layout is dull with little requirement for strategy or impeccable course management. While still worth a hit for a fun, relaxing game, if you are a serious golfer you will get a much greater challenge next door on the championship course.

PROS

  • Is next door to the Championship course

Cons

  • Is next door to the Championship course
  • Is designed by Peter Thompson

Played the Resort Course recently and was very disappointed. I played the new course the day before and must say the new course is much better. The resort seems to be completely neglected, whereas the new gets all the attention. The fairways were patchy and the greens were not mown and were slow and inconsistent. The price was the same as the new course so the pricing was expensive. The course has a very impressive layout, so it is frustrating to see such a potentially good course in such poor condition. Take my advice, play the new course.

Cons

  • Very Patchy Fairways
  • Very slow and inconsistent greens
  • Expensive for the quality of the course
  • All marking in yards

This ‘Old’ course at Capricorn International resort is better described as the ‘Resort’ course. Literature about the two courses at this resort and in national golf mags sometime describe them as Old and New, and sometime as Resort and Championship. Either way, this is the baby brother of the two.

If it wasn’t for the spectacular championship course next door then maybe this one would gather more praise. It’s an interesting design, well maintained and pretty friendly for all standards of golfer, which is as it should be. Serious golfers should test themselves on the championship course and more social golfers (of which there are quite a few staying at the resort) should play this one because they’ll enjoy the round more. The fairways are wide and not many hazards come into play (even though they’re sitting their waiting for the inevitable banana balls) meaning the scoring should be good.

Due to the resort and courses being established for the Japanese tourism market, most of the course distances (scorecard and tees) are in yards. There are 150 and 100 metre markers (along with the 150 and 100 yard markers) as a minor concession. Having played in the USA making the conversion wasn’t difficult.

The resort does look after golfing guests with regular shuttle buses running you from the front of the resort to the front of the clubhouse.

Green fees were $60 (incl. cart) for in-house guests (or with the Golf Course Guide) which was fair enough for the fact that it’s a Queensland based resort course.
