Capricorn International Resort

IN: COURSE DIRECTORY | REGION: Rockhampton, QLD | USER RATING: (3.7) | Add A Review

Capricorn International Resort, Central Queensland’s premier golfing resort (36 holes) is located on the Capricorn coast at Yeppoon. It is one of the few resorts in Australia which can boast two international standard golf courses.

The new course, which opened for play in early 1992, is awesome. Designed by American Karl Litten (regarded among the top ten designers in the world) this course is rated in the top twenty in Australia. Karl Litten believes the course to be one of his best. The course challenges championship level players as well as the amateur with its bare minimum of clearing and abundance of water hazards and bunkers. It rewards every player with superb scenery and immaculate greens.

The two golf courses are set in 22,000 acres of natural bush and wetlands. Early morning tee shots are always played to a gallery of native Australian birds (149 species at last count) whereas your afternoon shots must take into account the regular balmy tradewinds.

Played the Championship course on May 17. A spectacular course set in natural Australian bushland built on rolling, sandy, coastal terrain. The condition and presentation of the course was faultless with perfect fairways and firm, fast true greens. More importantly the layout and design is brilliant with strategic thought and course management required to score well. Several of the holes are breath-taking with a few also requiring a heroic water carry to secure the greens (however, bail out options always exist – another hallmark of good design). This course is a great test of golf and will require every club in the bag. It also puts the adjoining resort course to shame so if you are in the area be sure to play the Championship course over the other one.

I played both the resort course and the championship course just recently – December 2007/Jan 2008. Firstly the resort course, with wide fairways and reasonably straight throughout the course it offers first time golfers and hacks a pleasant introduction to Tropical golf. I would recommend playing early to reduce the heat factor, and bring plenty of water to keep you fluids up. All in all the resort course played well and was in fair to good condition considering the lack of water that had been absent. Having said this while we were up there we had terential rains and because the course is based oon sand, drainage was excellent and the faiways were beautiful to play off. Greens very true but bunkers tough to get out of. Scenery on the Champion course some of the best in australia with abundance of local fauna (roos, storks, parrots etc) all over the place. Friendy and helpful staff were the icing on the cake. Can’t wait to get back there…

Played the international course recently and found this to be a very challenging, but enjoyable course. I also played the resort course and found the international to be the much better course. The course is long with mostly narrow fairways. It certainly rewards accuracy with length. The bunkers were in poor condition, but the fairways were magnificent. The greens were quick. Certainly one I could play over and over again, but your game must be in good shape. The staff were helpful, and the cost is reasonable.

PROS

  • Very Good Fairway Conditioning
  • Very Good Challenge
  • reasonable price
  • Staff are helpful
  • Very Challeging Course

Cons

  • Poor bunker conditioning

A spectacular course set in tropical central Queensland. Although a par 72 (36 36) course it has an ACR of 75 from the plates. And when you look at the distance on the card it looks even harder with 7154 staring back. Fortunately this is yards but it’s pretty cool to see a figure greater than 7000 on a card in Australia. This works out as about 6540m, so it’s fair to say this course is long. The distances are in yards due to the Capricorn International Resort focus for the Japanese tourism market. It seemed easy to get onto this course, with plenty of tee times available.

The resort has two courses and this course (sometimes called ‘New’ but more correctly ‘Championship’) is the stronger. It’s not just total length but also the narrow width of some fairways, the greater number of hazards and most significantly, that the hazards are all right in play. It seemed easy to get onto this course, with plenty of tee times available. Perhaps most guests of the resort were being correctly steered onto the ‘Resort’ course which is more forgiving.

An interesting course where thought is needed on just about every shot, setting up for the shots ahead whether that is in the best line to approach the green, or trying to avoid the hazards. Plenty of natural vegetation, some tropical and some dry eucalypt forest. Water is regularly in play on the back nine.

The course was maintained as you would expect of a resort course and the greens were excellent, so no excuses for poor play. The feature holes were the first, a long opener and a true par 5 at 607 yds; the par 3 11th which was long and over water, and my favourite, the par 4 13th which required a drive up a rise, followed by a dog-leg, then a slope down to a water hazard, then finally the green guarded by three bunkers. Yet the hole is index 14 on the card!

Great golf – 9/10

I played the championship course on sat. 25/11/06 had the most enjoyable time .There was challenges galore to cater for the different standards for the average golfer. the front 9 had some of the most hardest holes on the course yet very playable to the hacker. The back 9 had some of the most beautiful scenery you could ever imagine. I will most certainly be going back to play again. do yourself a favour come play and stay.

played the Resort Course today.. i was excited to play there and spend the extra money as i've heard such great things about this course and i've lived in Yeppoon for 4 years.

bad things first. fairways were a bit of a goat track, the sand was hard packed in the bunkers there there were clumps of weeds and hard grass on the fairways and the snails went faster than the cart i had.

good points. ... greens were immacculate, ran very true and extremely fast, people in the proshop and fellow members were friendly and course layout looked great.

overall, nothing to get too excited about. if i do play there again it will be in the Pro-Am held in August

I grew up in this area and it pains me to see the state of this course.

With the drought all of the dams and waterholes around the course have dried up and it has redueced a world class championship course to a dust bowl!!!

I was tempted to go back and ask for half of my green fees back that's how upset I was when i saw the current state.

It hurts it really does to even review this course like this.

All i can say is please play there so they raise some money to truck water in as they need it.

Played 25/10/05

Been waiting for this day for a while. Having played the resort course on a big social day I really was looking foraward to playing th championship course.

Even though the greens had been cored ten days prior I refused to be daunted.

Can't really describe having a whole golf course to myself in beautiful surrounds, then scoring well and going back to the resort for a fine meal. Paradise? not quite but it'll do for the time being.Four and a half but I can't give that.

The old course is to the standard of a good metropoliatan course - a test for a good player from the back tees and with wide fairways and hazards on the side of the fairways / greens able to cater for "holiday" players.

The new course is long, best not played from the back tees by most ( as you'll fall short of the fairway bunkers), with a nice bushland feeling on the front nine and water on the back nine. Plenty of bunkers. It must be at it's best to play when the lakes are full.

The courses are well maintained and weathering the drought well. The setting is VERY Australian - nature all the way (the resort is only visible from a couple of holes on the old couse. Even the clubhouse is not visible from many holes).

The green fees are very reasonable - esp by QLD resort standards.

Most resort activities are free and the whole place is very kid friendly ( they can come out in the cart with you and have a few shots or the kids club is included in the resort room levy).

In summary, it is a great place for a holiday with the family - just a shame it's two plane flight sectors.

I wish every golf resort could be rated as less, equal or better than Capricorn. I doubt few are better and if they are ( such as Pelican Waters) they must be amazing!
