I think the poa greens is the let down on this course. One green (index 1) is abit too un-fair, just like 15th at Henley. Saw a chap hcp 10, putted down towards the hole and off the green AFTER shower !

Played Commonwealth a number of times over past 2 years. Condition has always been excellent. Great greens … and not easy. Not overly long but you have to think yourself around the course and most holes have a definite bias towards coming in from one side of the fairway. Par 5s good, Par 4s excellent and Par 3 a bit so so. (Short and few). 10,11,12 a great stretch and 16 another cracker with the dog leg around the corner.

PROS

  • Condition & Greens
  • Great variety of par 4s
  • Pretty quiet
  • Bunkering

Cons

  • Par 3s are average

I thought I would rate this favourite course, in winter, to give this another perspective.

There has been a fair amount of rain in the last month and a number of courses are either closed, partially closed off or suffering with very boggy fairways.

Commonwealth is a jem for the conditions of their fairways, greens and tees. Natuarally at this time of the year they are not at their picture perfect but there are area’s that they are working on to bring them into line for later in the year. One example is the 17 hole being closed for major works around the green. Trenches had been dug all the way around and pipes were going in as well as wiring. I suspect a better watering system.

To make up for the closure of 17 they have divided up the par 5 10th into a short par 3 (120 mts)which they called 10a and a short par 4 witch they called 10b (230 mts). This made the par 71 and they had cards properly marked to coincide.

The greens played very well but are very undulating in areas and miss it in the wrong spot and the ball rolls off a long way. I didn’t see one bunker with casual water in it and there was some heavy rain on Sunday and overnight. Bunkers were in great condition.

Some of the tees had been cored or similar as there were plenty with sand on them. All the better for later in the year.

A pleasure to play and a great challange. A must play if you get the opportunity.

Very good condition, a delight to play. Definitely top 30 in Australia and as good as Metro, Victoria or Peninsula courses.

This course was in magnificent condition at the time of my visit. The fairways were in top condition although the members need to remember to fill in divots. The greens were running true although needed a cut and roll as they were getting a bit long and played quite slow.

Design is varied and challenging on some holes. It really utilises the room available and you really feel like you are out in the bush with very nice surroundings and a couple of water hazards.

Overall a great experience from the driving range to the clubhouse.
