Albert Park is a Par 72, fully public championship golf course located in the heart of Melbourne and is the home of the Victorian PGA Championships, played every October.

The course runs alongside the racetrack for the Australian Formula 1 Grand Prix, and is a most picturesque location. There isn’t a better public access golf course in Melbourne.

Albert Park’s impressive landscape is dominated by mature exotic trees, and boasts some of the finest Elms in the state of Victoria. Recent extensions to the course have resulted in the planting of some 1600 additional trees of varying species.

Local residents began playing golf and developing the initial course in 1899, and 1999 marked the centenary of what is now the Albert Park Golf Course. The course is closed during the Australian Grand Prix but open at all other times, and Bookings are essential.

I played Albert Park on a Sunday afternoon in early December and was impressed with the overall experience of the course. The proximity to the city is a key drawcard and the views of the skyline when walking down a number of the north facing fairways is extremely impressive. It is a relatively simple layout, however their are a couple of really interesting short dog leg Par 4’s that add some interest.

The course condition is quite good with a significant coverage of grass on all of the fairways and greens, although this is expected with the recent weather in Melbourne. With the compact nature of the layout meaning only minimal space between fairways there isn’t a lot of trouble to be found and what rough there is, is quite forgiving. Overall the course makes for an enjoyable social round with great views of the city.

PROS

  • Proximity to the city
  • Short Par 4's
  • Views of the Melbourne skyline

Cons

  • Can get quite busy
  • Not a hugely creative layout

Measures 5843m Par 72 with five par 3s ranging from 121-191m, eight par 4s ranging from 273-376m and five par 5s ranging from 416-489m. Albert Park is a flat parkland course layout with wide tree-lined fairways. Fairways are good but a little bare in patches. Greens are smooth but run a little slow at times. Teebeds are lush and mostly flat with good lies.

Holes worthy of mention include the 376m dogleg right 5th with greenside bunker left and right and the 191m 15th with bunker short left and right guarding the large green.

There are no real challenges for the serious golfer. There are 15 bunkers on the entire course. Apart from the 4th and 5th all par 4s are quite short. The par 5s here are short and very weak especially the 3 on the front nine. I feel some holes should be par 4s and are only par 5s to make a par 72 layout. It is no surprise the course is rated 69.

Played here midweek on 10/11/2010 with green fees currently $24. Teeing off on the last 4 holes can be distracting with the noisy and busy Queens Road on your left. Course conditioning is ok.

Always ridiculously busy on Saturdays and it is a favoured haunt of bucks party’s so be prepared for a sometimes frustrating round. Decent course if you want to want to roll out of your hotel bed and have a hit but if not you’d be much better off travelling to Yarra Bend.

Just called to make a booking and was twice hung up on after being put on hold for several minutes and then when I spoke to someone the third go they were extremely rude and werent interested in accomodating my needs, so ill take my group of 16 booking elsewhere. It would have been more convenient to play at Albert park but with that kind of service they can forget it.

I have a soft spot for this course. Its not the hardest layout in the world, yet it does have some challenging moments. The course has a nice backdrop of the lake and a nice view of the city. I recommend this course highly for the normal golfer who wants an enjoyable hit around.
On Sat. in summer a hot chick in shorts shorts comes around selling beers and food…….definately a high light

PROS

  • Nice layout
  • Nice backdrop
  • Hot chick not wearing much comes around selling beers while you play

Cons

  • Busy Sat.

What is it about this course which makes it a "championship course"? Is it because the course condition is poor? The layout is flat and unimaginative? It’s an easy course? And if crowds came there would be no vantage points for them to watch from?

Do they really play the Victorian PGA Championships here??!

Still – if you’re just starting out playing golf, I’d imagine this is a pleasant place to play.

Played here on occasions and have been rather underwhelmed by the course. Being so close to the city, its a very flat course and unfortunately, the dry Melbourne weather has taken away some enjoyment of the course.
The upside is that its quite difficult to lose your ball here, though as others have mentioned, you need to be mindful of car traffic on some of the holes!

PROS

  • Close to city
  • Flat course (not too tiring)

Cons

  • Course conditioning have seen better days

I played there a couple of weeks ago and was very unimpressed. The fairways are very bare and the rough is just dirt. The greens are nice and green but that is only due to green coloured weeds which make for very inconsistent speeds. A very odd layout. Much better courses available for the money.

i enjoy albert park. live local and play usually once a week there. not bored when i play there and has good greens. BUT.. i will not play there again on weekends. i can assume that the management has no regard for the quality of golf they offer their patrons as every time on w/ends, have had so many people on the course that it took ten minutes after i got to a tee or my ball to play next shot at a minimum. disgusted!

Albert Park is a wonderful lay out and can challenge even the lower handicappers. Only issue I have with it is that it is quite yellow at the moment and it does not seem to be getting any better which is unfortunate.Fairways are decent sized and the course throws up a few suprise holes. One tip if doing 18, start on the back 9 as the last 3 holes are a killer if your tired.

Went there today for a hit for the 1st time. The scenery is quite different with the lake on the side, the road on the other and the CBD. The course has a fairly good layout, though the drought has totally destroyed the fairways. The one big positive is that the condition of the greens are the best of any public course in Melbourne. Overall I’d rate this course 14/15/20 though it can improve to 18/20 if the condition of the fairways improves. Worth a hit once every few months.

Its a lovely course located in the middle of Melbourne. The scene is lovely, when windy it can be difficult, Driving Accuracy is quite vital. Greens werent up to standard, however the practise green was in a great and pure state.

The course is in very good condition considering the drought we are in and the state of the other public courses in Melbourne. Fairways were forgiving with plenty of bail-out areas and very lush although the grass was a bit long which allowed little run. Greens were in a fair condition save for the all the unrepaired pitch marks left by the beginner golfers who should be educated. Great for a bit of a laugh with friends but not really a challenge as it’s as flat as a table with very few hazards to get you into trouble.

Played here on Sunday. Ground condition is great- could sink a long tee into the ground at every hole and the greens are in great condition – shame people don’t fix their plug marks. Fairways had plenty of run. No sand buckets at the pro shop though… pretty poor considering how chopped up parts of the course are. Well worth a visit. Enjoy the views of the fantastic Melbourne skyline, incl Eureka tower!

Not a bad public course for the money. They have been renovating the greens recently so that should improve things dramatically. The fairways are fairly rough so don’t expect alot of run from them, even with the drought. The front 4 or 5 holes run next to the lake with the road between so there’s quite a bit of wildlife watching you play, which is very pleasant, although they do tend to leave things behind them so watch your step. Overall a good course to keep your hand in.

PROS

  • Excellent proximity to the city, even for a quick 9 holes at lunchtime.

the course especially with the drought is a bit dry so it allows the ball to roll quite a bit

not a very long course but very enjoyable to play

make sure you allow $2 to park in the golf course carpark

Pretty good public course set in a great location.

The pro-shop staff are friendly and helpful and price for 18 holes is excellent value.

The first couple of holes are relatively easy and should see you off to a good start. The next 3-4 holes are good tests of your second shot. The 3rd has a bloody palm tree in the way that I always seem to hit (no matter where I am on the fairway). The 4th has a green the size of a postage stamp and requires a precision 2nd shot. The 5th has a couple of greenside bunkers that are definetly in play. The 6th is a very nice par 5 that requires a couple of very long shots to get on in 2.

The 11th is my favourite - dead straight par 5 with the city skyline on the horizon - spectactular view!! The 15th is a horror par 3 -170+ metres to a tiny green with huge bunkers waiting to gobble-up your ball.

All in all, a good golfing experience.

Can occasionally be a little damp underfoot. It always seems to rain the day/night before I get down to this course.

Not a bad medium size course which is generally in pretty good condition given the amount of traffic that it has to cope with. In good weather it is a great place to spend the afternoon (assuming that you don't hook anything on the first couple of holes). IMO the best holes on the course are the middle 6 or so

Also, almost all other public courses (and a couple of private ones) around Melbourne could learn something about crowd control from the staff at Albert Park as the marshalling at this course is second to none. Despite the occasionally heavy traffic, the round just flows along, thanks to the ongoing course control.

For about $20 you can get to play less than 3kms from the city. Highlights include the bevy of joggers and walkers that go by which makes hooking your ball almost a pleasure. Course is flat and not overly long but can bring you undone if not paying attention. Anything way left on half the holes will either find lots of trees or an angry motorist. The staff are amongst the friendliest at a golf course I have ever played at. And you can buy and drink cold beer or spirits in a can during your round. Oh and a barbecue sizzles to feed you behind the 5th and 11th holes. A real social atmosphere. And they employ marshalls to make sure the pace is kept up. Truly great value for money.
