The three courses include The Lakes being any open links style course. The Dunes, a very tight narrow 9 and The Quarry which as the name suggests is cut from an old limestone quarry with the courses signature par 3 third.

Looking at previous reviews of Joondalup I’m a little shocked there are negative reviews at all. Either some people can never be pleased or they are smoking crack. I played the Dunes and Quarry nine a couple of days ago on a visit from Melbourne and put simply this course is AMAZING. The Quarry 9 in particular are some of the most visually spectacular holes I have ever played. It really kicks in on the second. A nice wide open tee shot towards the moon craters. My favourite was the 3rd which I coined the par 3 of death. For a 20 handicapper like myself any tee shot over deep ravene is always intimidating. Luckily on the day I nailed the tee shot. The 5th is another cracker which makes you position you’re tee shot well.

The Dunes 9, also spectacular are a little different. The challenge on these holes are with the large undulating greens and narrower fairways.

Another plus for Joondalup is the condition of the course. The course was rated #4 public access and #1 public course for conditions and after playing it I can see why. The course was in tip top shape when I played.

In short, when in Perth you MUST play this course.

PROS

  • Variety of shot making.
  • Course condition.
  • Aesthetics
  • Good quality hire clubs
  • Plenty of water refill spots.

$99 is too much to play this course. It was one of my favourites until today. That cost and the attitude of the members has put me off.

The white tees were with the ladies and every time I went to tee off the blue I had the members behind or in front tell me off. Probably jut jealous my sister was hitting it better than them.

In all seriousness, it wasn’t pleasant and $99 each felt way over the top.

I was lucky and played here last week and managed all 27 holes. The course was in great shape, the fairways and greens excellent and the staff all friendly and helpful. From the championship tees, the course is a challenge but still offers opportunity to score. I would be happy to be a member here. I don’t live in WA but next time I visit I will play here again and again!

The Greens were crazy fast and made the game very hard to enjoy. They were true and well covered.

The fairways were well maintained.

The rough was rather overgrown and not maintained very well. It also had significant amount of rubbish is some rough areas like pellets.

The design did not match the environment and I found it very off putting.

There were a couple highlights with the high quary walls.

The club house is great.

Over priced in comparison to other WA clubs of higher quality.

Would not go back.

One of the best courses anywhere on planet earth, period. Attentive, courteous staff, well spaced tee-off times, an immaculate, pristine course with imaginatively designed holes around spectacular grounds, and a fabulous, friendly clubhouse. Courses of this quality in many parts of the world and ridiculously expensive or unable to be played by the general public. If you are in WA and play golf, you simply MUST play Joondalup, it’s a rich golfing experience.

Came over to Perth and tried to book an 18 hole game at Joondalup but was told it was too busy could only get the nine at The Quarry. Was half an hour before we saw another group and after finishing seemed very few peOple around. Loved the holes we played and for me personally easily the best course I have played at. Course was pristine, loved the challenge and didn’t find it too troubling. A couple of blind holes but no where near as bad as The Cut when it came to not knowing where to hit too.

Loved it, biggest disapointment by far was not being able to play more, so another compliment I guess.

If I lived over here would definitely be a regular in my golf schedule no doubt.

To be rated #1 in anything is to invite argument. Whether this course is, or not, is irrelevent. You MUST play Joondalup at least once in your life. To put this in perspective, I love country courses with a social feel. Is a manufactured, manicured and manipulating golf course "The Best"? Possibly.
Played the Quarry and the Dunes and had a great golf experience all round. Combine picturesque, challenging and fun and that just about covers it. Did not find the greens as big and bad as others obviously have but struggled with distances, so one man’s poison etc. The debate in The Relic’s household is – Is it better than Bonneville?
Maybe, maybe not. Still searching for the perfect game!
The Relic.

If you only read the first sentence of my review, read this…. if you love golf then GO AND PLAY AT JOONDALUP, it’s the best golf experience in WA. And with the after 3pm $29 special, you now don’t have an excuse!

After hearing all the hype and stories about Joondalup, I finally recently completed all 3 of the 9 hole courses. Taking advantage of the $29 twilight golf special, I played one of the 9’s each week, and I have to say the hype and stories I had heard weren’t even close to how fantastic this golf course really is. I can honestly say I have never enjoyed playing on any other course as much as Joondalup, it’s like fantasy golf land from another planet. You have to see it to appreciate what I mean.

All 3 of the 9’s are unique, with the Dune probably the hardest, followed by Quarry and the Lake being the ’easiest’ (until you get to the 9th!). The whole course is visually spectacular with enormous elevation changes, some huge wide expanses of open fairways, intimidating and welcoming tee shots and it definitely accommodates players of virtually any handicap.

The whole course is beautifully manicured to perfection (greenkeeping staff deserve medals!), and the fairway grass is firm and tight to hit off…just as god intended. I play off about a 12ish handicap, and I could easily enjoy playing every hole there. I have never encountered greens as big anywhere else before, so some imagination and large testicles are required to have a chance at pulling off the putts that legends are made of.

You are completely mad if you don’t go and find out what all the fuss is about, you will not regret it.

Played Lakes & Quarry – 23 Feb 2010.
Played as it always does, fantastic. Par mean the world on most holes but the Lakes if defo a tad easier when you keep out of trouble. We paid $89 with buggy on wkend which was fab wkend deal.
Course was very busy but moving along nicely & monitored throughout which is great to see. No point in chatting about the course as every review clearly shows what the course(s) is about. Suffice to say bring your A game & you’ll love the scenery!!
You might need to talk to Golf Psychologist after the game if you dont play well but that championship golf. You cant say you weren’t warned from such a great course.

I love this course, infact im becoming a member. There is a new deal on weekdays after 3pm its only $35 for 9 hole (walking), for the quality for the course i think its a great deal. The course is amazing with different challenges on every hole. I personaly like the lakes because its the easier 9 and its always good to see your score lower

We played the course (Lakes/Quarry combination) only a couple of weeks after the greens were cored and sanded. We were made aware of this when booking and given a discount for it (Still cost $89 per player, including cart). It is a difficult course to rate as the layout and condition of the fairways were very good, but with the coring the large greens were a nightmare. If you had a long putt it was impossible to get it to the hole and the downhill putts also pulled up quickly. There are also too many holes where the approach to the green is massively uphill and this can get very tedious. We had played Kennedy Bay a day or two earlier and found it a much better design. At Joondalup there were too many holes where you couldn’t see the danger or had no idea of the distances to the danger. It would definitely pay to play it more than once to understand what is required. For the money, even at a reduced rate it is very expensive compared to most other similar courses. It is not really a walking course so you need a cart to get around comfortably. It is not a traditional course and so it is one you either love or hate, as for us we would prefer others, Kennedy Bay and Secret Harbour are a better bet. We think the issue is that all the hype about the course suggests that it should be enjoyable and it just wasn’t, but we can’t really say why, it just didn’t grab us as other courses have.

an absoulte cracker of a course! played here in april 2009 along with the cut, kennedy bay, araluen, burswood and collier. By far this was the best conditioned course! From tee to green the course was just immaculate. A joy to play and even more so with such a good layout.

We played the quarry (twice) and dunes. The quarry nine is just spectacular golf. Greens were running true and quick. Highly recommended even if with the slighty higher green fees.

Absolute delight! What a stunning course! Visually captivating and very interesting from start to finish.

Anyone that goes to Perth, do yourself a favou and play this course.

"On the seventh day God rested, but on the Eighth day he dragged his arse out of bed and created Joondalup"
This is without a doubt the best golf course in Australia and must be in your list of top 10 courses to play before you die.

Now what can I say…the Quarry nine is the best 9 holes of golf I have ever played in my life, and that many would agree to be the best in Australia. Whats more, the Quarry is closely followed by the Dunes. It is no wonder why these two nines have been rated together as the best 18 holes in Australia by the Australian Golf Digest magazine. I played the Quarry and Lakes nine for the first time in the Drummond golf day of November 2007 and was overwhelmed with the experience, despite playing poorly. Last week I spent $30 to play twilight golf here on the Dunes/Quarry nines which was the best $30 I’ve ever spent to play golf and hardly anyone was on the course!

Joondalup is a course that makes the hair on the back of your neck stand up each time you go there. For many years I’ve considered my experience at New South Wales Golf Club to be my best ever, with its cliffs and blind shot holes, however Joondalup has topped it hands down. The risk reward on offer here is incredible, with the Quarry 4th, 5th, 6th and 9th holes and the Dunes 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th, 8th and 9th holes all springing to mind. You must either play for safety off the tee to lay up short of bunkers and hazards, gullies or hills – or simply GO FOR IT. If you play in two minds or sit on the fence, prepare to be punished. You must clearly make a decision and have a plan in place for every hole or one mistake could cost you two or three strokes and numerous lost balls. It is definitely “mickey mousey” as some may call it but that is what makes for an interesting round where one must always use their imagination to score in the 70’s. There are too many tee it up and blast away courses around and this is what sets Joondalup apart from all of them. It is not as long as the Vines, Secret Harbour, Sun City, Kennedy Bay or The Cut, but you must know exactly what clubs to hit for every shot ALL the way around it or you will have a tough day.

Now getting to the greens is only 50% of the battle, as these greens are not only the largest I’ve ever putted on but the trickiest ever to read. If you fail to hit your approach shots close to the hole with confidence, be prepared to either 3 or 4 putt, especially on the Lake nine (where the 2nd, 3rd, 6th, 7th and 8th are all ENORMOUS with hidden undulations everywhere). When the wind blows, you will find it even harder trying to get the pace of these. And before long you will find yourself having allowed for a 6ft left hand break and see the ball do the exact opposite. You can be further from the hole than when you started…..now that what I consider Joondalup to be all about. It is these challenges that will forever keep you coming back for more. And for whatever reason, make sure you get to this place at least once in your lifetime. Play all the 3 nines and compile an opinion, its been a major talking point of Australian golf that you either love or hate this course. But one things for sure, I’ll never get enough of it, its the bees knees and I’d give it 6 stars if I could. It is SIMPLY THE BEST!

PROS

  • EVERYTHINGS GREAT, a little expensive at $140 a round but well worth it. The twilight deal is a cheap option at $30 after 4.30pm in the Summer months

Cons

  • It has none, pricey but worth it!

Played the Dunes/Lake combination and was totally impressed with everything. Course staff were really helpful, course was in magnificent condition. Dunes 9 made me really think my way around, risk and reward came into play and even for a high handicapper the challenge was fantastic. The Lake 9 was a lot more open and allowed a little more grip and rip, but still with concequences for bad golf. Would certainly visit again to play the “infamous” Quarry 9. Just have to be very nice to the other half until next years birthday treat.

joondalup is one of the finest courses in australia.this course is aimed at the better player if you think you can come out there and bomb some long drives get ready to meet danger. This course is for the thinking golfer where position will win over length. The quarry nine is my favorite it is nine holes where you cant wait to see what the next hole will bring.the dunes and lakes are good but wont excite you like the quarry will.if you come out wanting a score in the seventies good luck its hard work i have done it once. The greens at joondalup are big but when you put on them they are very fast if you have a down hill put you might break a sweat.the service is first class.

Joondalup’s quarry 9 has lived up to all my expectations and then some. Better then Kooyong, Grange GC, and Hope Island from my opinion. Quality was A1. I was tight and the windy conditions made it difficult but not matter what shotyou had to play there was a challenge.

I can see why Joondalup Resort is rated Australia's #1 Resort Golf Course. From the customer service to the quality of the course, it is the highest standard I have experienced in the country and will keep me coming back. If you only have time for one round or just want a special treat, you will not be disappointed with Joondalup, even in winter it is beautiful. You have got to play the Quarry course, wow!

I played the quarry couse and its very unforgiving. If you hit a wrong stroke and will pay for it. I took a few risky strokes and it didnt pay off. I would recommend taking the easier way out otherwise you will lose alot of balls in the quarry like i did.

the green were very fast.

the only problem i do have with Joondalup course was that i was not allowed to walk around the course and was forced to hire a cart.

OVERALL - very good.

Not a course for golf traditionalists - outlandish and over the top and therefore loved by some as violently as it is hated by others. Different, which is about the best I can say about it - objectively however there seemed to be a lot of up hill approach shots from deep valleys, which can get a bit tiresome after a while.

If you want to see where the rich play their golf, or treat yourself to one of the best courses in Australia... Joondalup is a good place to be. With 3 sets of 9 holes, each with a different set of challenges, there is something for every level of golfer.

As a 18'ish handicapper, I find I play my best golf at Joondalup as it forces you to think about your shots. The hit and hope player will find themselves more often than not in trouble, either in the numerous fairway bunkers or in the very unforgiving rough.

The fairways are always in excellent condition and the greens superb, with tough flag positions to keep you honest. The bunkers are plentiful, although most not too deep - the Quarry 4th a noteable exception. If you're in that bunker, a double figure score could be in sight.

While more expensive than most other courses around Perth, not many match either the condition or challenge of Joondalup. Easy to see why it's rated in the top 10 courses in Australia.

I hate the place as it offends my sense of aesthetics, but on the other hand I can see how others love it. Which ever way you lean it is one of Australia's unique courses - worth playing just so you can form an opinion.

One of the more interesting courses I have played. 3 nines, each with different qualities. Some unusual design, especially around the quarry.

I found judging distance difficult as many of the features are larger than life & often make things look closer than they are.

There is a gimmick value to some of the design, but it doesn't take away from the enjoyment of the experience.

At the tail end of my Perth Holiday I had been "wowed" out with the great courses of the west, but Joondalup beat them all hands down. Quite apart from the happy, friendly and helpful staff all over the place the course is fantastic - split fairways, menacing bunkers, carpet-like fairways, true-rolling greens that reward a well placed approach, punishing rough and lovely views too. The place gets a lot of traffic but the course presents SO well. If you have to choose, make sure you play the Quarry nine. The first is neat and tidy, but turn to the second and the beauty of this place is laid out in all it's glory. And hey, if the clubs are letting you down, use the camera instead.

Played there 1999. Course staff were so helpful. Course was exceptional in layout and maintenance. Pro shop staff were equally helpful. I played mid week during a trip around Australia. I am a parochial Queenslander and when Hope Is here was getting great plaudits as a resort course at that time I really felt Joondalup should have been rated higher. It is a scenic challenging course. Any golfer who goes to WA and doesn't play Joondalup is missing out on a special golfing experience. I will be going there again when I get to WA on our next trip!
