Just the most magnificent scenic golf course I’ve seen. Almost every hole is an adventure. Cliff top holes that are buffeted by the changing ocean winds, (The 3rd, Hogans hole can be a Sand Iron if the wind is behind you or need a well hit 3 iron if it’s into your face)or much calmer conditions on the back 9 which is carved into beautiful forests & natural lakes. Plenty of dog legs, elevated teas, tricky short par 4s and a finishing hole (par 5) that will make you want to hit the best approach shot that you could dream of. Worth every minute of the 9 hour drive from Melbourne. And you can catch plenty of fish & eat in some of the best country restaurants I’ve been to.

If you have a mate who has mastered the basics of golf – take them to Narooma. They WILL be hooked on golf for life. It has everything. Coastal cliff links, whales waltzing past…and just when you think you have survived the ocean holes…it gets tough !!! 7th plummets down down down and then off iinto the forest. The 11th a par 5 gets your heart racing…down, down, down,,,hard left Clyde…not that hard ,,,swap :(( 13th – smash a great drive up the middle over the hill,,,ooops a dam. Best test of any course is scoring millions but having a BLAST doing it. 18th par five – second shot – cut the corner out over the magumba – bye bye another ball – time for a beer.

Measures 5941m Par 72 with four par 3s ranging from 129-193m, ten par 4s ranging from 311-424m and four par 5s ranging from 424-460m. Fairways are tightly mown in some areas, teebeds are good. I couldn’t comment on the greens as they cored them less than a week before I played.

The first 6 holes takes you along a links-style feel back to the clubhouse. Make sure you avoid paying ’Hogan’s toll’ on the 141m 3rd.

The 460m dogleg left 11th with an elevated tee is a sleeper hole with water alogn the left from tee to green with 3 bunkers guarding a rear to front sloping green. Apart from this the other par 5s are comparatively weaker.

My pick on the outward nine are the 369m 13th with a blind tee shot over a ridge to large dam on the left, about 240m off the tee, to an elevated green guarding by 3 bunkers. The 169m 14th needs respect to a long narrow green with bunker left and bush over the back.

The most picturesque (back nine) hole is the 344m 15th with a slightly elevated tee cut from the forests to a hole which sweeps to the left with water from tee to green along the left.

Played here in the Saturday competition on 25/09/2010 and paid $31 comp fees. Good company for the 4.5 hour round, but shame I couldn’t score more than 34 points. This course along with Bermagui are my favourites along the Eurobodalla coastline.

A bit disappointing. The scenery is spectacular but the course has major water issues at the moment and they are not watering the fairways.

There are alot of blind tee shots which as a first time player at the course makes judging when to hit and where difficult and does not help the speed of play.

I look forward to playing when the course is at its best.

Time for an updated review methinks…

Played here last week whilst in the area on holidays. I must admit, this has to be one of the best courses I’ve ever played. The location, the setting, the course condition, the service. Just everything.

I won’t go into it too much other than telling you to do yourself a favour and play this course. Simple as that.

(I suppose I should put in a disclaimer – we did play there a few days before the club championships so the course was as good as it could be!)

PROS

  • The greens - the best I've played
  • The fairways - lush, green, and providing a reliable surface
  • The setting - the contrast between coast and forest is like nothing I've seen before.
  • Price - at $40 midweek I think this is a steal. Just hire a cart or it could get tiring!

Cons

  • 1. It's not closer to home...
  • 2. Was a little slow, but was on holidays so didn't care at all!

The contrast between the coastal holes and the forest holes is stark yet invigorating.

The breathtaking views by the coast are best highlighted by Hoges' Hole - the 3rd, where the Paul Hogan Winfield tv ad was filmed back in the 70s.

The forest holes are only a short distance from teh coast yet you feel you could be 100km inland, as the enormous natural trees and scrub encompass each hole (not to mention the dam that plays a large part in ruining your golf!).

A must play for the golfer who appreciates aesthetics and a challenging layout.

Narooma gives you 2 types of playing conditions. The first 7 holes are along the rugged coastal cliffs which dominate the area, with little protection from the elements.

The next 10 holes are inland and provide some protection from the wind which so greatly effects the opening holes.

The last hole heads back to the clubhouse and again you are exposed to the elements.

You will need to have great accuracy from the tee as many holes have steeply sloping fairways, particularly the 1st, where a drive even down the left side of the fairway will almost certainly end in the right rough.

The Par 3 3rd is a gem of a hole, with the green perched above a huge sea cavern. Anything short or slightly long will end up in the Tasman Sea some 35 metres below the hole.

The 7th hole heads toward the inland section of the course and is a difficult Par 4. Most of the holes on the back 9 are truly inspiring with both water and heavily timbered rough coming into play.

The clubhouse boasts some of the best coastal scenery you will find anywhere and compliments the course superbly.

This is a must play course with fast but true putting surfaces which will hold any lofted approach shot.
