Sanctuary Cove (Palms)

Gold Coast, QLD | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

The new Palms Golf Course at Sanctuary Cove has returned more challenging and magnificent than ever. Strategic plays are what will win you the game, with the course surrounded by numerous bunkers and pristine lakes. The new Palms bears little resemblance to its old self with a lot of variety to keep it interesting and great fun to play.

Beautifully merged into a tropical landscape of century-old cabbage palms and paperbark trees, the undulating greens replace the somewhat tame greens of the old course. Strategic and Innovative new bunkering makes scoring from 100 metres out particularly challenging. Sand is held up the face of the bunkers, which are visually spectacular. The gently undulating fairways mean that golfers must be able to handle uneven lies that further increase the interest in the approaches to the already demanding greens of this ‘Ross Watson’ designed ‘Gem’. Watson a renowned and highly respected golf course architect was responsible for the redesign of Royal Sydney Golf Club and has created many other masterpieces such as Magenta Shores and Kooindah Waters to name a few.

There are many standout holes on the newly designed Palms. The first is a par-five with water and clever bunkering placing pressure on the golfer to start working straight away on keeping the ball in play. The Par 3 holes will undoubtedly attract critical acclaim and require excellent shot-making skills. The 17th and 18th are spectacular finishing holes, leaving golfers with a lasting impression of one of Australia’s finest courses. Little wonder designer Ross Watson believes The Palms will become one of the top 100 courses in Australia.

The private club is now allowing leisure round access to members with an official club handicap.

A wet day and there was a hold up for the first nine when people were let on in between groups and told – only if you don’t hold anyone up! No marshall to check on it, they only checked if you stayed on the path with your cart. The course was great to play and would like to play on a good day- would have preferred to not play in the rain but no refund at all or was told when I asked can we shift to another day- No mate.
Had to ask for the hat that was with the deal.
Staff at the end of the round offered " you got around pretty quickly" just over 5 hours for two of us not great.

Despite the overcast weather the staff were helpful and happy.
The fairways were soft but still a joy to play – but you do need to hit them.
Accuracy with your club selection and shot is the key.
High handicappers may not like the bunker positions.
I would highly recommend you try the course at least once.

I played this course yesterday and I am very pleased to say that it was a very enjoyable experience from start to finish. Friendly staff, immaculate fairways and greens, GPS in the carts. The course certainly gets you thinking and is not about who can drive the longest, you are rewarded for hitting the fairway but not punished serverely for a wayward shot like other courses like this. I will definitely be back.

PROS

  • Friendly Staff
  • Immaculate Course
  • GPS in carts

Cons

  • Lack of drinks available on course

Great course, was still very wet under foot but played well. Greens were smooth and very receptive to spin. Considering how much rain they have had the course was still in good condition. Staff were very helpful and polite. Tee areas were even and well grassed. Fairways were still very wet which made it hard to find balls due to plugging, over all the course was great to play. The cafe was a great sight considering we had an early tee off, good coffee before we started set the day off to a good start. After finishing we headed in to the clubhouse and found the lady behind the bar who was very busy at the time great to deal with. The burger was great.

Played the course after a week of heavy rain. Considering the amount of rain that had fallen the fairways were in very good condition. Greens super fast and challenging. Great layout and no problem finding our way round. Staff very courteous and friendly. No problem getting logo hat and gourmet burger after the round was excellent.

Played for the 1st time on 7 January. The Course was in good condition with special mention for the very smooth and fast greens. However, the age of the course was evident and the overall landscaping were not as good as Glades or Lakelands. The Greens were challenging which was great! $85 deal was good considering it included a free cap and a small bucket for range. However, no proper arrangement were made for the range buckets so service could’ve been better. Well mannered staff though~

Played on 2nd Jan and only crticscm of the corse was the bunkers weren’t as tidy as they could have been. Enjoyed the course and the day. Signage on approach needs updating, went looking for the Pro Shop to be told that it was now located at Pines culubhouse and that needed to organise cart etc at dias at bag drop off area and would get instructions there. Finally got cart organised and asked about lunch facilities and told that can’t use the clubhouse (members only and fair enough) but could use the terrace at the club house. Got to the pro shop and firstly didn’t offer range balls and cap as per Inseek golf deal, then can’t use the terrace would have to go back to to where we picked up cart and from there the range balls and cap would be organised. After lunch, back to the Proshop to check in again and needed toilet facilities but all toilets needed key card access and had to get key from the Por shop.

Played the course on a reasonably windy day which added to the challenge of a well laid out and beautifully presented golf course.
The greens were super fast on the front nine and some timely watering helped us on the second set of greens. I would recommend this experience to any golfer.

Played Palms course on Sunday 30/12/12. Very windy day but I was driving really well which helped in the conditions. Greens were like putting on a glass table (FAST) but held true line. $69 fees and ripped around 18 holes in 2hrs 10mins. Course in fantastic condition. Would love to play the Pines layout given the chance. Will def be back.

After the 2km drive from the practice ground to the first tee, I was lost for the rest of the day. The course layout is a mess, constantly turning back on yourself to find the next tee. The greens were not what I would expect from a course charging $150 and the fact that the bunkers had not even been raked topped it off.
The course was average, as was service.

Very nice course in very good condition. I played very well, so all the more enjoyable. I would go back if the pro shop staff were even remotely pleasant or welcoming and the cost was more reasonable. One staff member was annoyed that my wife wanted directions to the toilet and barked at me to "tuck my shirt in!" It is simply not worth $135 to play there and the club lost a few hundred dollars in sales because of the attitude of the staff, one person in particular. No course map on the card, and no GPS in cart disappointing, given fees.

Considering we just played on the first day after a rain soak week, I am still impressed that the fairways are still playable and in general fair.

My son & I played yesterday. We play off 8 & 11. Arrived about 2 minutes before our tee time and felt very welcome when we were asked if we wanted to change to a later tee time (30mins)and were offered a bucket of complimentary range balls. We played of the blue markers which was not to long – on a few of the longer holes had to use long irons or hybrids. Course was wet after a bit of rain but still in good nick. Fairways excellent. Greens in great condition and rolled well and very consistent. Bunkers raked and fresh sand. We did find some of the greens a bit hard to hold – needed to play a bit short and run up to flag. Enjoyed the new layout with a some of the original Palms holes mixed with a lot of new ones. Only downer for the day was I lost my new Two Ball Odyssey putter cover. OK value when you get a deal at $85 but wouldn’t pay full rack rate. There’s lot of deals out there. Will be back in a fortnight to try again.

The weather was unsettled with a few rain showers about.
The course is well designed and is a very tough layout, one of our group playing off 22 found it particularly difficult, so our opinion is that it is not a course for the high handicap players.
The greens were even paced not too fast and our putts rolled well, again lots of undulations made it very difficult for our high handicapped player.
A group of 4 members pushed after our first nine and held us up for sometime, not nice when you are paying $90 each to play, think they must have their own etiqutte rules!!!! at the Cove.
Finally after we were finished our round we visited the REC Club to hopefully enjoy a drink or two, to our amazement was told the bar was closed. We then drove to Hope Island to a welcoming Bar

We were very disappointed in day at Sanc Cove ( Palms) No problems with staff who were courteous However last time we played there we had super cart with GPS plenty of ice and complimentary water in esky Not this time Course was fine but state of toilets including no toilet paper were appalling !! They look in need of updating
We always like to support clubs and bought some apparel from Pro shop We thought we d have a drink after and were sent over to Club House but were made very much to feel like second class citizens when we couldn t drink where everyone else seemed to be but would have to have gone to isolated deck amongst stacked chairs on our own No Thank You !!
We go to Gold Coast from Sydney often and always hop on your site to see good deals For $ 100 each this was not the case when we can play many other attractive courses for less than half that !!

Played here Monday with my group and will not be back. The course was great and the golf staff were obliging and helpful.

Now the Bad. Only access to the course was via the old ex club house. Mini pro shop available here and we were dispathed to the Pines tee off some distance away. Finished our game and had to go to the outside balcony as it was Members Only inside. Our transport pickup was not allowed into the entrance of the clubhouse and we had to go back to the old clubhouse to be picked up.
A pure case of we want your money but keep away from US Members.

Played 10/06/12 – carts on paths – course reasonably wet. Check in staff very friendly. Great course layout – water, bunkers, garden beds = risk reward golf. Greens excellent to putt on – quick and true. Worth playing.
Will definitely return
Down side – smoke butts on ground around tee areas and around greens – if you smoke – put them in the bin, not on the course.

Played the Palms course on 09 Feb 2012 and it was an amazing expereince. Very good layout that has plenty of hazards (water, sand, trees, etc). Also some of the fairways are quite narrow needng good drive to stay on fairway. Greens ran very true and were not all that quick (great for the hackers). Did not have any GPS in the cart so club selection was a bit hit & miss. I would definately play the course again.

Played the new Palms course on 1 Feb after the deluge that the Gold Coast had the previous week. The course was in excellent condition considering the rain with only some minor wet areas that did not effect our play.
We were looked after extremely well when the chef was unable to prepare our order so they refunded our money & gave us free sandwiches which was great. Hardly any distance markers on the course so you need your laser or GPS as plenty of bunkers in play from the tee. Greens were slow with plenty of swales, so precision onto the green is a must. The layout has definitely been toughened up but it is an improvement from the old Palms course.I wouldn’t pay the RRP Green fees of $150; not worth that money. We paid $88 through iseek golf & that would be top dollar.

Played on Sat morning with group, 15 of us, all handled very efficiently and with some patience, great to see.

No GPS on carts anymore which is ok but there are no course guides. Having not played the newly developed course it was a bit more hit & miss than I would like. Sprinkler heads did not have yardage either consistently so a little disappointing.

Speed of the day was great and the staff fantastic, the different clubhouses is a little odd and long drive for guests to the first tee box, just seems a little odd.

All in all i believe it is better than the old course so thumbs up and agree that when it grows up a bit will be a great ride.

Played Sunday 11th December.
I’m a Brisbane CBD resident, weekend social player(GOLFSHOT APP hcp 11.7)
Play regularly on any given Sunday, providing the weather is ok! My last last three Sunday’s have been great on the Gold Coast playing at: The Colonial, Lakelands and Glades. I would definately recommend Lakelands & Glades to anyone re: service, playing conditions and price.
Note: I played Lakelands just before renovations and the greens were fantastic.
Playing Sanctuary on Sunday was a gamble considering the weather. I usually play with(iPhone app GOLFSHOT GPS)which allows me to pin point club selection etc. But this course map was not on there? Being new, I can accept that. But the surprise came when I jumped into the CART with TOUCHSCREEN COLOUR GPS. Problem solved. Great practice facilities ($6 bucket of balls), great service (On course drinks & food)Course was good; tee box areas needed attention(needs the GABBA heavy roller), layout and conditions overall a great challenge. Great reward for those who can hit the fairways in regulation with driver. Note plenty of fairway bunkers to take into account. They are out of play if you can carry 230m off the tee though. Greens were an ideal size to attack and challenging with many levels to putt from.
The round was cut short due to lightening and rain. Customer service back in the pro shop, handed me a voucher to come back and play. Great result considering my original investment to play. So overall, first impression, very good.

Played 4-12-11, and was wrapped with the course. Hats off to the design team, they’ve turned a tired layout into one of the coasts best. Its a little on the shorter side than most championship courses but this by no means makes it easy. Well placed bunkers, water hazards and trees makes using the driver a risk v’s reward decision.
Got on with a $65 early bird special, and would pay that anyday of the week, the normal $135 i’d have to really question it but its def up there amoungst the best courses on the coast.

Overall course was both playable and enjoyable, although a few areas such as tee blocks were a bit scruffy, bunkers very consistent but a few looked in need of a tidy up.
