Sanctuary Cove (Palms)

Gold Coast, QLD | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

The new Palms Golf Course at Sanctuary Cove has returned more challenging and magnificent than ever. Strategic plays are what will win you the game, with the course surrounded by numerous bunkers and pristine lakes. The new Palms bears little resemblance to its old self with a lot of variety to keep it interesting and great fun to play.

Beautifully merged into a tropical landscape of century-old cabbage palms and paperbark trees, the undulating greens replace the somewhat tame greens of the old course. Strategic and Innovative new bunkering makes scoring from 100 metres out particularly challenging. Sand is held up the face of the bunkers, which are visually spectacular. The gently undulating fairways mean that golfers must be able to handle uneven lies that further increase the interest in the approaches to the already demanding greens of this ‘Ross Watson’ designed ‘Gem’. Watson a renowned and highly respected golf course architect was responsible for the redesign of Royal Sydney Golf Club and has created many other masterpieces such as Magenta Shores and Kooindah Waters to name a few.

There are many standout holes on the newly designed Palms. The first is a par-five with water and clever bunkering placing pressure on the golfer to start working straight away on keeping the ball in play. The Par 3 holes will undoubtedly attract critical acclaim and require excellent shot-making skills. The 17th and 18th are spectacular finishing holes, leaving golfers with a lasting impression of one of Australia’s finest courses. Little wonder designer Ross Watson believes The Palms will become one of the top 100 courses in Australia.

The private club is now allowing leisure round access to members with an official club handicap.

Very much enjoyed playing this well maintained course. This is a layout
which requires careful course management if one is to score well.

Course was in great shape and definitely a shot placement course due to heavy bunkering and amount of water. Thouroughly enjoyed my round as it was not crowded and play was quick. Would definitely play it again and recommend it to anyone.

Played the Palms on the 16th Feb, was in great condition and although the GPS mounted in the carts where removed they have replaced them with hand held GPS’s which was great. Love playing this course.

Played the Palms course on 09 Feb 2012 and it was an amazing expereince. Very good layout that has plenty of hazards (water, sand, trees, etc). Also some of the fairways are quite narrow needng good drive to stay on fairway. Greens ran very true and were not all that quick (great for the hackers). Did not have any GPS in the cart so club selection was a bit hit & miss. I would definately play the course again.

Played the new Palms course on 1 Feb after the deluge that the Gold Coast had the previous week. The course was in excellent condition considering the rain with only some minor wet areas that did not effect our play.
We were looked after extremely well when the chef was unable to prepare our order so they refunded our money & gave us free sandwiches which was great. Hardly any distance markers on the course so you need your laser or GPS as plenty of bunkers in play from the tee. Greens were slow with plenty of swales, so precision onto the green is a must. The layout has definitely been toughened up but it is an improvement from the old Palms course.I wouldn’t pay the RRP Green fees of $150; not worth that money. We paid $88 through iseek golf & that would be top dollar.

Played on Sat morning with group, 15 of us, all handled very efficiently and with some patience, great to see.

No GPS on carts anymore which is ok but there are no course guides. Having not played the newly developed course it was a bit more hit & miss than I would like. Sprinkler heads did not have yardage either consistently so a little disappointing.

Speed of the day was great and the staff fantastic, the different clubhouses is a little odd and long drive for guests to the first tee box, just seems a little odd.

All in all i believe it is better than the old course so thumbs up and agree that when it grows up a bit will be a great ride.

Played with a large group on Saturday. Staff really helpful to the group and explained the no GPS.
Course wasn’t long or as hard as others but the greens are the real defence, especially on the back 9. Course will grow up nicely and make it a bit harder to get our of the rough.

The Palms course was in excellent condition. Very friendly staff. Quick check in. Very few people on the course so very enjoyable.

Excellent course, particularly if you like strategic play instead of just long courses. You have to think on all the shots, lots of risk and reward. The greens are also interesting tests and it was in great condition. In cart GPS was also very good. Overall it was a lot of fun to play and I’d recommend it to anyone.

Played this course on 26/12/2011 and was impressed with the condition and layout.
Every shot needs to be thought through with alot of risk reward. Definately a course to play on the Gold Coast.

Only draw back is lack of drinks cart or water bubblers on course.

Played course boxing day and great day out friendly staff and great carts to cruise around it. Course was fantastic but only negative was slow groups ahead of us but would recommend this course to anyone and don’t be afraid to buy golf gear at pro shop as prices are as cheap as I have seen on the coast

Great revamp of the old Palms. Now a much more challenging course. Great value if you get a discounted rate on iseek. Greens can be very challenging depending on pin positions as many are undulating. Will definitely play it again.

Awesome golf course, but watch out for the dress code ! We paid on iseek the same as we have for just about every course in SE Qld, these guys said no cargo pants and made us feel like fugitives ! Is it only us ? Course was awesome though

Played Sunday 11th December.
I’m a Brisbane CBD resident, weekend social player(GOLFSHOT APP hcp 11.7)
Play regularly on any given Sunday, providing the weather is ok! My last last three Sunday’s have been great on the Gold Coast playing at: The Colonial, Lakelands and Glades. I would definately recommend Lakelands & Glades to anyone re: service, playing conditions and price.
Note: I played Lakelands just before renovations and the greens were fantastic.
Playing Sanctuary on Sunday was a gamble considering the weather. I usually play with(iPhone app GOLFSHOT GPS)which allows me to pin point club selection etc. But this course map was not on there? Being new, I can accept that. But the surprise came when I jumped into the CART with TOUCHSCREEN COLOUR GPS. Problem solved. Great practice facilities ($6 bucket of balls), great service (On course drinks & food)Course was good; tee box areas needed attention(needs the GABBA heavy roller), layout and conditions overall a great challenge. Great reward for those who can hit the fairways in regulation with driver. Note plenty of fairway bunkers to take into account. They are out of play if you can carry 230m off the tee though. Greens were an ideal size to attack and challenging with many levels to putt from.
The round was cut short due to lightening and rain. Customer service back in the pro shop, handed me a voucher to come back and play. Great result considering my original investment to play. So overall, first impression, very good.

Played 4-12-11, and was wrapped with the course. Hats off to the design team, they’ve turned a tired layout into one of the coasts best. Its a little on the shorter side than most championship courses but this by no means makes it easy. Well placed bunkers, water hazards and trees makes using the driver a risk v’s reward decision.
Got on with a $65 early bird special, and would pay that anyday of the week, the normal $135 i’d have to really question it but its def up there amoungst the best courses on the coast.

Played this course on sunday 4th december. Staff were very friendley and helpful. For a new course it still has a little way to go but the layout was excellent. A mixture of new holes and some of the old refurbished. I would recommend this course to anyone. Will defineately be back.

Played 20/Oct, Havent played here for over 10 years. Staff very helpful and considerate 10 out of 10, thanks Andrew, well done. Overall course was both playable and enjoyable, although a few areas such as tee blocks were a bit scruffy, bunkers very consistent but a few looked in need of a tidy up. For this sort of money, would expect higher level of course presentation but looks like they are trying.

New Sanctuary Cove (Palm) course is fantastic. Well set out with water and bunkers in play. Not just for looks. The green played true and the course is quite challenging.

Played this course on the 27th Nov and found it very good.It was windy and until i play it again and know our way around this new layout i will further comment. Our problem with out being pedantic was the arrogance of the staff in the pro shop by the 1st tee.Whilst we had a play and stay deal thru the Hyatt Sanctuary which was quite good i would not be inclined to pay the Green fee,s otherwise.

Played this course and was amazed by the excellent condition for such a new course. The greens and fairways were as good as I’ve played on in Queensland. The course is not overly long but the layout is unlike anything on the Gold Coast and requires you to think your way around, using every club in the bag. Was delighted to learn I can now get onto the Pines!!

I played this course recently and was very impressed. Layout is fantastic and the condition of the fairways and greens was first class. Now if I could only get on the Pines.
