I was part of a group of 24 ladies who recently went to Tocumwal Golf Club for a midweek golf trip. The staff there made our trip to the country a great successs. The girls loved the course (not the bunkers) and playing on dry running fairways is a novelty for us in winter.
The catering staff provided great meals and our farewell dinner on Thursday night was excellent – infact they had to close up to get us to leave everyone was having such a great time. The buffet breakfasts were enjoyed by all and the bundle of newspapaers waiting fo us was very much appreciated.
The Pro shop obligingly changed our tee times on the Thursday morning so we didn’t have to hit off so early. This was a alteration to a well established pattern and all agreeded it was much more civilised. They even had the perfect prize for our best dressed lady, with a pink theme on Thursday. Everyone had a great time and we will go back again next year.

For the simple hack enjoying a holiday on the Murray, Tocumwal golf course just adds a great challenge to your average golf day. Two courses with interchangeable front and backs. Up until recently they have had no water restrictions and even now they are able to use recycled water, so the greens and fairways are still very green. Compared to the other courses around the area like Yarrawonga, this is an easy course to get onto and play in relative peace and quite.

For the unitiated, Tocumwal comprises an original, superb 18 hole layout, plus 18 new holes which have been added later. Rather than keep them distinct, both the President's and Captain's course have a mixture of the old and new holes. The original holes are just great, with a lot of challenge and character. But the new holes are another story. I think the design process went something like this -- lets put a pile of dirt here, give it a flat top, and call it a green. Want a bunker? Ok, use some spare dirt to make a little wall around the area and make a flat little sand pit. You want variety? Ok, half of the dead straight 370m par 4s run North, and the other half run South. If I run out of room, I'll build a 90 degree dogleg on the last one. Get the picture? Honestly, the best thing they could do is just plough the whole thing up and stick with the original 18 holes.

I, like peanuts thought that this course was not a good as the Capitans but in saying that it still presented a challenge from what I remember there's a beaut par 3 with a generous green with severe undulations then a decent par 5 with a couple of strategic par 4s thrown in, it's a little flat throuought but still worth the effort I shot 87 from the tips so still a good track. Similar to Beverly Park or Kogarah maybe a little harder.

I think slightly inferior to it's twin course, the Captains, this course provides a challenge in itself to make for enjoyable golf for all levels.

The contrast between the front and back nines is stark, with the former being well-established, parkland style. The latter is more open, and wind-swept, but longer with bunkering making for an attractive setting.

The first is a medium-length par 3, which is a nice change to the usual design. The front nine highlights are probably the par 5 fifth, the par 4 seventh and par 4 ninth. The fifth is quite straight but narrow, well protected by mature foliage on both sides. Careful attention to accurate shotmaking is essential. The seventh presents a left dog-leg, with a tee shot needing careful club-selection as you try to shorten your approach shot. The ninth has an interesting approach across the culvert that is surrounded by trees. Again position from the tee is vital for a decent shot at the hole.

The back nine I think is best served by the short par 4 13th, where a risk and reward decision from the tee is faced on a left dog-leg. Bunkers await an errant decision, leaving a tough second to an elevated green.

The finishing hole is tough - a long par 4 with little relief if you are off line, and undulating fairways to provide few flat lies.

Greens are generally quite good - with enough tricky borrows to ensure you will shoot high if you're not careful.
