Holes 1-9 (Red) measures 3039m Par 36 with two par 3s ranging from 136-186m, five par 4s ranging from 297-376m and two par 5s ranging from 481-501m. There are 18 bunkers.

Begins with a short par 4 and most of the holes after the 297m-1st are fairly straight with a slight fairway bend left or right. All holes apart from the par 3-7th are bunkered. The two par 3s are probably the best holes. The 186m-5th requires a teeshot over the pond to a long green guarded by 3 bunkers. The 136m-7th requires another teeshot over a pond to a 30m wide 2-tier front-sloping green with the red stakes up to 5m short left and also 10m left of the green edge.

Holes 10-18 (white) measures 3010m Par 36 with two par 3s ranging from 140-178m, five par 4s ranging from 313-377m and two par 5s ranging from 438-470m. There are 18 bunkers.

Like the red course with tree-lined fairways and mostly bunkered holes. Some good holes include: the 365m straight 10th with a fairway bunker right about 220m off the tee to a wide green guarded by 3 bunkers; the 178m 11th with a large storage dam behind the elevated tee to a wide green heavily bunkered on the rightside; the 140m 14th with a teeshot over another pond to a 30m wide and 15m long bunkerless green which has water 2m from the front edge and right edge of the putting surface; and the signature 356m slight dogleg right 17th with a dramatic view from the elevated tee to a fairway littered with 4 fairway bunkers at the dogleg right corner and the large storage dam far left. The water is not generally in play but, for the longer hitters, the fairway bunker on the leftside at the dogleg corner requires a teeshot of 250m to clear the bunker. The 25m long 17th green is also guarded by 4 bunkers. With 9 bunkers the 17th hole is quite easily the most bunkered hole on the course.

It is worth noting that the 373m 15th has the tiniest green on the course at only 15m long and 10m wide. It is also worth noting that the 17th tee is the highest point on a relatively flat course. Arguably the white course (holes 10-18) is the most challenging layout at Catalina.

Holes 19-27 (blue) measures 2960m Par 36 with two par 3s ranging from 161-190m, five par 4s ranging from 321-364m and two par 5s ranging 450-451m. This is the most bunkered layout with 20 bunkers.

Slightly more bunkered than the red and white courses but the blue course is the shortest 9-hole layout at Catalina. The par 5s at the 21st and 26th holes are quite short. The best hole is the signature 190m 23rd which is the longest par 3 and rated the hardest hole on the entire 27-hole layout. This par 3 requires a long iron to a green guarded by a bunker short left and a pond 5m right of the putting surface.

The SIX par 3s are probably the highlights here with most having water coming into play and bunkers to avoid. The SIX par 5s are quite similar and probably the weakest aspect of the layout. Out of the FIVETEEN par 4s on the course none of them are overly long and challenging. Most par 4s are generally short and play similar to each other. Not so challenging for the better golfers but reasonably challenging for its older members.

Overall, the course conditioning is quite impressive: the medium-to-large sized bentgrass greens are reasonably smooth but play a little slow. The kikuyu grass teebeds and fairways are well maintained and quite lush. On the entire 27-hole layout there are a total of 56 bunkers.

Batemans Bay urban area has around 16000 people and also has the 9-holer at Oaks Ranch and Country Club within 20 minutes of Catalina (see my course review under the now closed Moorings Golf Course).

Played (and walked all 27 holes in under 5 hours) on the Easter public holiday 9th April 2012 with $40 green fees to play either 18 or 27 holes. As mentioned there is a good clubhouse and decent practice facilities.

Given the flat terrain Catalina has, it is architecturally difficult to design 27 exciting golf holes, but I feel the course conditioning here is impressive. Quite similar to Moruya and the other 27-hole layout at Pambula-Merimbula. Friendly staff and members.

Catalina Country Club is located on the South Coast of NSW, in Batemans Bay. The course consists of three different sets of 9 holes, red, blue and white. Practice Facilities are excellent, putting green, chipping green and a driving range are all provided, though you have to pick up your own balls on the range.
The course itself is in great condition, I played all 27 holes there in January and it looked beautiful. Great tees, fairways, greens and bunkers. The holes themselves aren’t overly challenging, there aren’t any holes that grab your attention, lots of doglegs at Catalina.
Most fairways are lined by trees on either side so accuracy is important, the course isn’t that long either, most holes a solid drive will leave you with a short iron to the green.

Catalina is a public course so you will be able to play there, plenty of carts and buggys are available for hire, as are sets of clubs. The Pro Shop is big and stocked with a lot of equipment, you will definitely find something that you like there, the selection range is huge with all tha major brands available.

PROS

  • Public Course
  • Excellent maintenance
  • Great practice facilities
  • Well stocked Pro Shop

Cons

  • Holes are very similar.

Played there recently, found the course like many other reviewers to be a on the boring side, dog legs left or right, no real holes that grab your attention or make you really keep your head down. When i visit the area again i will play mollymook hilltop which is much better value being $35 for 18, not $40 for this course, and most of all the course is a real challenge!

Played all 27 holes in one day recently (with a cart, of course!). Nice course, not too difficult. Well laid out. Only lost one ball over the entire 27 holes – very good by my standards. Any course where I don’t lose many balls is a good course.

Not too expensive green fees – $35 for all 27 holes. Cart was $46 for the 27 though, which is quite steep.

Maybe lacking in scenery, and there is a bit of sameness about the first 9 holes, especially.

Played here for the first time October long weekend. Lots of players out and the pace suffered accordingly. I quickly found myself somewhat bored with the layout - not a lot of variety of looks to the holes.

The course was in good shape. The greens were very slow, although my playing partner advised they had been lightening a fortnight previous. Bunkers had plenty of sand in them, fairways had good lies and the rough was light.

I just didn’t find the course all that interesting for $35. I didn’t care that it is mostly flat, but it’s challenges just didn’t engage me after about 5 holes. I like to think back after a round about the shots I had played and the holes themselves.

I was hard pressed to remember any truly great holes on the course, let alone too many I could call interesting or just damn tough.

PROS

  • good condition

Cons

  • uninspired layout

Disappointing – I suspect the Greens Committee consists of a bunch of old men who don’t like losing golf balls, the fairways are lush and well mowed, the rough is lush and well mowed, there are minimal trees between fairways, it’s tight and players are in danger from big hitters missing their own fairway. Personally I’d like to see the club get rid of 9 holes and then design a top quality 18 with lots of rough and more interesting holes.

Played here last Sunday, enjoyed it immensely. Solid test for all golfers.

Lovely variation in short and long holes, plenty of water, rewards both accuracy and long hitting. Greens in super nick.

Highlight had to be the 25th hole, par 3, where one of our lads lost a ball in the middle of the fairway (hacked from the tee), then proceeded to hack again, spit the dummy, hurling his wedge into a tree. Bloke having breakfast in a house overlooking the course started a slow hand clap amidst regaling his wife with his account of the shennanigans below.

Locals also very welcoming during a post round beer.

Top course, top value for money.

Played all 27 at Christmas 2007. A test for the high-handicapper like me. Stay on the fairway, because the second cut is still pretty thick. You can play all 27 with a cart, and I suggest you do.

Good 27 hole layout with open fairways and nice greens. Excellent condition with thick rough and quite spongy fairway grass which tends to grab the blade of the club. Take a 7 wood for easy lenght into some of the greens, because long irons will not have enough height to stick to the greens. A great course but prices are a bit steep. If you are in this area, be sure to try out nearby Moruya Golf Course for a comparable challenge.

Nice enough course, greens are well maintained but fairways are the thickest Kykuyu you have ever seen. Green fees are over priced by virtue of it's proxcimity to capital cities. Nice course if you like hitting fairway woods.

This is a course that I never miss a chance to visit when I am on holiday in the NSW South Coast region.

Wide fairways, excellent greens and an interesting, challenging layout make this always an enjoyable course to play in beautiful surroundings.
