A true links that rises out of the sea and is set totally in coastal sand dunes with magnificent views from the fairways over King George Sound.

From July to October a good chance to spot whales calving. Once described by Craig Parry as his favourite Australian golf course, the windswept fairways are typical linksland with swales and undulations, and the smooth greens are very quick with subtle variations.

The vegetation consists of Albany “woolly” bushes and “peppies” that make for tight driving from many tees. The course plays particularly long with the hardy kikuyu grass and prevailing wind conditions.

A very enjoyable and testing layout.

Having just played three very early morning rounds at Albany, I have to say it’s a very good, challenging but enjoyable golf course.

Firstly, it’s not really a links course, although it does have rolling fairways, good views of the ocean and is very exposed to the wind. It’s hard to put a tag on what type of course this is; not that it needs one as the end result is very good. There are very few bunkers, and generally little hazards around the greens (except the undulations).

The courses teeth come from the tight drives, length, uneven lies, and exposure to the wind. Course condition was excellent, people are friendly and there is an honour box system if you are teeing off before 7.30am. At $30 for 18, I will play everytime I’m in Albany.

You couldn’t get any better than this golf club. driving in seeing the the multi storey clubhouse over looking Middelton Beach in Albany to the 100plus year rolling fairways of the links course, the members make visitors feel welcome and every time i go i enjoy myself just like you will.

I play off ’anything from 16 – 22’

The Wind can play havoc from hitting a Driver and 7 irons to the par 5s, to a 3 wood on the shot par 13 going back towards the ole original clubhouse.

If you get the chance play here when you go to Albany, there are 2 other courses in the region but i wouldnt even consider going to them you will be disappointed if you are going there before here.

If you like your links style course add a star! High handicappers will struggle to play to par here as very few of your stances will be flat.
No real problems off the tee and the greens are soft (plug plus) and repetitive. If your long iron or fairway wood game is not up to scratch, get some practise first as you will need it.
Tough but not tear your hair out. Picturesque but not wow. Some variety but up and back etc.
If the wind is blowing, rug up. Plus if you have calf or knee problems – drive. One of the only courses within cooee with grass greens and the club house is impressive but don’t expect a draught til after three. Playing partners, Jan and his wife Helen were great company and very helpful to a first timer and my poor game would have been awful wthout their advice.
Worth a game but don’t expect a walk in the park.
The Relic.

I haven’t played ALbany for a few years, so i wont comment on the condition but the course in general.

I have played this course dozens of times. I was a junior member here when I was @ school, and it is still one of the most challenging courses i have played. There are some nice long holes, and what ever you do, avoid the trees. those woolly bushes eat balls up.

In terms of experience, time your round right and you will see whales in King George sound.

Prevailing winds from the ocean make all holes interesting even though they are all pretty straight.

Holes 11 12 13 14 are brilliant
Great views
The couch grass means you dont get a great deal of run
And every hole other than the short 14th run east west west east
Still great value for around 30 bucks

I have played this course 3 times in 3 days, in July, for the last 10 years as part of a regular golfing odyessey. It truly is a fabulous golf course which will certainly test every aspect of your game. It has some genuinely tremendous holes which are far more testing than the naked eye and the meterage chart would attest to. Try no. 2 on into a busting southerly or holes 11, 12, and 13 in just about any conditions. Make par up that stretch with anything except an easterly and you will be one happy golfer. But no. 18, “Gunbarrel” is one of the all time great closing golf holes. With your round or tourney on the line, that is one sphincter clenching tee shot. The clubhouse is a ripper, but clearly under utilised, and the course is not always in perfect condition, but this golf course is an absolute must for any keen golfer.

Played this course just last Friday 20th July and thoroughly enjoyed the experience. The wind was North Westerly which is the opposite of normal in this region but it was strong and made the game a challenge. The fairways and greens are in excellent condition and the whole experience was well worth the $25 green fees. I will definitely be back to this course.

Some interesting reviews here already and mine goes in with the group who don't appear to have an ongoing connection with the club...

I played on a Tues afternoon (3 Oct 06) and saw barely another person out on the course which is a great way to play golf. It might have had something to do with the cold, gusting wind and occasional showers sweeping over the course, but there were sunny periods too. Who ever said that golf was meant to be easy? Albany GC is a suburban course set between the harbour and a lake about ten minutes from the centre of town.

Although the course markets itself as 'True Links Golf' this seems to be solely due to the significant undulations present on all of the fairways. There is little coastal vegetation, no preponderance of bunkers and it's not oceanside (rather 'bayside'). Also, the course provides little variation in it's routing with all holes running parallel to one another. eg: the front nine has four holes running out in the same direction, with five coming home the other way.

The course is testing (especially in the wind) and was in very good condition and I'm more than happy to pay the $25 green fee for a course of this standard. But, it didn't leave me feeling that it was anything particularly special.

This course is one of the best links course in Australia. It was ranked 6th best at one stage. Its real golf as they say. at just on 6000 is far from a monster but the gusty sideways wind makes it very tough. The fairways are beautiful and greens also are very true. The fairways are tight so the 3 wood gets used allot. In fact I have played this course often without pulling "big muma" out of the bag and hence played it better. This course tests your iron play. Thank goodness for the newish hybrid clubs where you can give it something. I urge people to play this couse as it really feels like your'e at a British open battling the elements.

Just wondering whether groper was playing the right course or maybe it was the par three on the other side of town.
Albany represents a unique challenge, is a true links course right on the ocean offering truly magnificent views.
Having played golf all around Australia, and at some very fine golf courses, find Albany deserves its ranking as one of the best in the country.
Green fees for visitors are only $25 for 18 holes and $15 for 9 holes, anytime of the week.

No, Whallop was right, although he is probably a "glass half empty kind of guy" while reviews from club members with marketing degrees should be taken with a grain of salt.

Albany is great fun and that is probably as good a compliment as any course can be paid. But a great course – I think not, which is frustrating as it could be. Whallop has a point that if money had been spent on the course rather than a flash clubhouse, the place would be world class.

Kikuyu is aweful and kills this place as dead as a dodo, in my mind a links with Kyk is not a links at all, just a parkland track with bumps. Greens are dull and invariably soft and slow and holes can get a bit monotonous and similar looking at the clubhouse end of the course. However the fairway undulations are probably the best in Australia which is what makes this place so frustrating – it is so close to being great if only they would finish it off. However as a country course with funding issues as all country course face it is great, but $40 a round is way out of line.

I am on a 16 handicap and love playing Albany. I have played NSW ( La Perouse) and Moonah (open) on windy days and have found Albany to be more challenging. On one par three I played a sandwedge off the tee on day one and the next day played a 7 iron. This course is well worth playing.

There are only three bunkers that I remember and the only time I have the ball on a flat playing surface is when I am teeing off. I have found the course to be tough, but it has hepled my handicap as I have learnt to play all different type of shots from different lies.

The scenery over the ocean is fantastic. There is a new clubhouse and a good pro-shop. We always try and get to Albany to play in the Wittenoom cup at the end of January as it provides great golf and good socialisation.

Contrary to the opinion of Whallop, who obviously had a bad day out on the course and it is a tough course for a high handicapper, the Albany Golf Club's true links course is in the best condition it has been in for years. In the main this is due to the replacement of two greens per year for the last few years.

Yes the Kikuyu does make the course play longer and that is the attraction for many players who appreciate the unique and traditional golf experience that this course provides in contrast to other true links and the manicured golf experience many newer courses provide.

The Club has raised the one off visitor green fee to reflect the unique nature of the golf experience that is provided and this is further justified by it's recent inclusion in Darius Oliver's superb new publication "Australia's Finest Golf Courses" and not because of the move to a new clubhouse which was paid for with the proceeds of a land swap deal with the developers of the property adjacent.

The uninformed and frustrated Whallop also fails to mention that frequent visitors may access the course for 18-holes from as little as $20 by purchasing one of our bulk green fee discount packages providing access to this unique golfing experience for extraordinarily low cost.

The fact that a game of golf here also provides some of the most spectacular ocean views in a region already over brimming with other fantastic and unique scenic attractions for visitors provides further evidence of the poor and negative outlook of our reviwer Whallop.

Any serious golfer who does not make the effort to visit the course here is missing out on a truly unique golfing experience underlined by one of Australia's golfing greats Craig Parry crediting the course as one of his favourites.

As raw a links golf experience as you will see. From memory I had one flat lie in my 18 holes, a real roller coaster.

In generally poor condition and the Kikuyu destroys any links running game, but still worth playing for the experience.

Unfortuntaly the committe overextended themselves on a new clubhouse and have subsequently doubled the greenfees for visitors to $40. Not really worth it.

Could be one of the best courses in the country if properly developed and managed.
