Living just down the road so I play here quite regularly.
Not a bad 9 hole track, and pretty well looked after,
Water comes into play for hookers and slicers on a few holes,
no bunkers on the course which can be a plus or minus depending how you look at it.
Opening short par 5 has great eagle chance with a well placed 2nd shot
and the Par 4 8th can be driven by the longer hitters
Nice practice area with Driving range and also 3 greens, 2 of them very sloped so are great for working on your lag putting,

I regularly play here with a bunch of mates, and did again so on Sunday. In all the times i’ve played there, i don’t think the course has ever looked as good as it did. They’ve re-jigged the course set up, with the old 4th hole now becoming the 1st hole, and it really does feel alot better to play on. I guess it just flows better. The grass feels very good, although one of my mates did mention he prefers it cut a little more. The putting greens seemed a bit inconsistent compared to previous times, but for the price of the green fees they’re great anyway.
Glad to see the club moving forward and continuing to look at ways to improve the course.

The course is not bad. Its as good a course as you will get for a 9 hole course. A fair bit of water to challenge players, however there is no bunkers. Greens are well looked after and the fairways are in pretty decent nick. Enjoyable 9 hole course.
PROS
- Good Greens
- Always green
Cons
- Some easy par 4's
- No bunkers

The Altona Lakes golf course is a fun and challenging nine hole course that is well priced $16.50 and you can finish a round between 90-120 minutes. Greens are in great nick at the moment. Fairways are good, however if you are off the fairways lies can be really bad, rock hard mud. Plenty of water on the course which requires straight drives. Highlight of the course is the par 5 440m 4th hole which dog legs to the left, if you are prepared to take on the water can be a hole where birdie or eagle are possible, or your ball in the bottom of the lake.
Club house/Pro shop is well stocked and they always have a different beer on sale each weekend. Has a large driving range and practice chipping and putting areas and the local pro Jordan is a great guy with good lesson prices

im just starting to play more golf recently and must say that the greens at this course a fairly quik, especially wen the wind picks up.
the 6th green is one of the most quickest ever seen, you got to get it perfect to actually putt the ball.

I played here last weekend (19.04.09) course was in fair – good nick.
My 1st time here and enjoyed it, was a little worried when I arrived. Looks like a goat track but played well. Only 9 holes but does have change to tee boz on the back 9. Green are fast & true for a public track. 2nd 9 was laot easier to play as there distance markers are hard to find (painted bricks in the ground)

No bunkers make it too easy. The greens and fairways are good. Through the area looks dirty and the lakes look more like swamps.

The greens and fairways of this course seemed to be in fairly good nick. No GIR’s or preferred lies. However as far as aesthetics go the course and its surrounds are quite ugly. Refinery at the back, which by the way stinks, and water hazards that resemble swamps let this course down. Some attention needs to be paid to other areas of the course, including the tee areas, besides the greens and fairways. Some bunkers wouldn’t go astray either. I’d much prefer to spend an extra $2-$3 and play elsewhere.

If you havent played this course for a few years you will be fairly shocked at how improved the course is.
Its in great nick and very very green considering the lack of water.
Greens are well looked after and there is plenty of water to test your nerves.
New management has seen a great improvement and chance to work on your skills.
Only one gripe is that there is no bunkers but in the future who knows, with all work thats going on around there wouldnt surprise me if they will happen

You start the Altona Lakes course off with a short par 3, fairly easy, no hazards to worry about. The greens here are well looked after, and there's no way you can blame the fairways (on any hole) if you miss-hit the ball because they have also been well kept during the dry summer months.
The 2nd is a 449m p5, usually against a southerly breeze. Water will come into play for the chronic slices and those who hook may be in for a new ball aswell due to deep rough and out-of-bounds.
The 3rd, 4th, and 5th holes are all p4. All have their own distinct characteristic. Water surrounds the fairway on the 3rd, but shouldn't cause many problems, even for the new comers to golf. The 4th is a slight dog-leg left, with plenty of water hugging the inside of the hole. The 5th is a rewarding 355m p4. The fairway is open, the green is fairly flat and birdies are a real chance if you hit a good tee shot. Over-hit the green and you might find water though. The 6th is a 149 p3, not too much to worry about here either.
The slopey greens on this course will test most, as too will the difficult pin placements.
The final three holes are enjoyable as that they give you a real chance to improve your score. There isn't any water to cause concern, and a good drive on all three will open up birdie or at least par opportunities for the slightly more advanced golfer.
Good: Nice greens and scenery.
Bad: Needs sand traps. Not every club is needed, may be a little repetitive/easy for the more experienced golfer.

Altona Lakes has quite an interesting layout for a 9 hole public course. No two holes are the same and although the course lacks bunkers it makes up for this with a significant number of water hazrds as the name suggests. The condition of the course is fair, with the fairways a little hard and in a few places bare rock poking through. The greens and tees were all in good condition.
A real concern for this course however is the positioning of the driving range next to the 9th fairway. I’m actually surprised they can have the set up as the currently do for health and safety reasons. My playing partner and I were nearly struck 4 times by yellow range balls whilst walking up the fairway and the fence separating the two areas is only a couple of metres tall and falling down in most places.
In summary an interesting 9 hole course, in fair condition but with a dangerous walk up the last.
