Set on rolling hillsides and surrounded by bushland it is a joy to play. With no two holes the same it holds the golfer’s interest for the entire 18 holes.
The course is tight with creeks meandering their way throughout the entire course – trapping the unwary players or their wayward shots. Like all well designed golf courses, the course requires thought before hitting your tee shot and your drive needs to be well placed, especially off the blue markers.
And after the game, enjoy the well appointed club house with its views over the course and surrounding bushland.

yes this course is no augusta, but it is a course which requires shot selection and accurate shots. Some holes could bI would rather play 18 holes rather than 9e increased, but they have done the best for how much land they have. Variation of holes is welcoming. Will be coming back in the future

ok.. ok..Ashgrove is not everyone’s cup of tea but I like the place! We played today and the fairway and greens were in reasonable if not good nic and some holes were pretty challenging. The staff and members were very friendly and the club house was inviting.
Yes it is narrow and holes with 90* dog legs keeps it interesting but it was not boring which is more than I can say about some courses in central Brisbane.
PROS
- Challenging
- Friendly Staff and members
- Close to Brisbane CBD
Cons
- some very narrow holes that would require local knowledge
- No drinks cart on course
- Some bunkers are a little light on sand

Got pretty frustrated with Ashgrove after a few rounds there. Most courses punish bad shots, this one seems to punish good ones as well. It’s really a bit too tight to be 18 holes. They do their best with what they’ve got though and it’s quite friendly. You’d really have to enjoy the type of game where you play with your mid to short irons a lot and play short to avoid trouble.

when back to ashgrove and what a dissapointment the course is a joke from the moment you walk in when you have to sign your life away to hire a buggy to the bunkers with no sand and getting hit by golf balls at nearly every turn should not be a pga course has gone backwards rapidly won;t be back

This course is in a terrible state. The greens are just seeded dust and sand. It’s even shorter than I remember and fairly simple. It would be better to play backwards green to tee. Not worth bothering….never again

A challenging golf course with some serious undulation and potentially serious trouble if you miss hit. The course condition is great and the greens are fairly well thought out.
There was a hot blonde babe riding around selling beers but unfortunately we only saw her once and also unfortunate that she was not in a bikini.

Ashgrove Golf Course? What can i say.. Tight, Dangerous, Annoying, Unbelievable
Tight- The course is soo tight that a drive that lands on the fairway can roll onto a different fairway. Dangerous- A player can get hit by a golf ball whilst standing on a tee block or green Annoying- Greens that change pace every hole, Fairways that resemble a cow paddock Unbelievable- I have seen some strange things in my life, though 90 degree doglegs top it off
In conclusion, it is a poor golf course, though I find it disgraceful to see it ranked in the same class as Albany Links Golf Course . There are some nice holes if you can handle the pain leading up to them.

Played this course today and I have to say it was very disappointing. It’s an architectural nightmare with many holes dangerously close to each other (has anyone been killed here yet?) and terrain so steep in areas that if one hits a slope, expect a very long downhill walk to play your next shot. Amazingly it also has two holes that CROSS each other, 15 and 17. There is some bizarre routing that involves crossing holes and backtracking.
A course with few highlights, but I was impressed with the general conditioning, though we have recently had a lot of rain, and I must mention the short par 5 14th which is a standout hole on nice rolling land and the 18th, which is quite a decent short par 4.
Won’t be going back there in a hurry.
Highlights are few and

Having played Ashgrove several times over the last year I was really surprised that it has been given such a low rating by others on this site. The course is tight and requires accurate placement from tee to green. I found it challenging to have to concentrate on putting the ball in position for the next shot rather than just blasting away with a driver as you can do with impunity on some of the so called “better courses”. I was not surprised to learn that the Ashgrove pennant team were the 2007 BDGA champion club – if you play at Ashgrove regularly other longer courses in Brisbane would be a piece of cake! The greens are in great condition and have been right through the drought. The only real criticism is that the course could be longer, but I understand there are plans afoot to lenghten it from par 68 to par 70/71 in the near future.

I am a member of this course. It is in great nick, especially compared to other golf clubs around Brisbane. I must admit that it doesn’t lend itself to long hitters and that you can (and I do) regularly find yourself in trouble if you don’t shape your shots correctly. I suggest that all those who sledged (see below) this course scored very poorly and were quite embarrassed and looking to blame anything other than themselves. Ashgrove is definitely worth a look especially if you want a challenge.

When a course offers unlimited golf you have to ask yourself 'why are they doing that'?.
Reason is numbers would be low, the course is something akin to playing in your grandad's cow paddock. If you have a decent set of clubs get ready to be hitting off rocks and dirt because there is little to no grass. A friend took me out here for the first time and I have made it clear I wont be returning. Also I agree with another reviewer regarding the first green position,It's like someone has put it there as a practical joke. Get the grounds keeper out of the bar and onto the course!!

I have recently been getting back into golf and this was one of the first courses I played in 2006. I hadn't played much for the decade prior. After having played a number of courses around Brisbane, this is definately a goat track.
Tight, very tight, dog legs at 90 degrees only after 130m off the tee. Although there are a couple of nice holes, the majority are not. Having just played Oxley (which I will rate 3 star), I had to rerate this course a 2 star. And seeing as though I have already given it a 3, the 1 star now is to even the ledger.

This golf course has got some bum reviews on the website. Considering that Jindalee is rated better than it is a disgrace.
This course is in very good nick. Good lush fairways, nice greens, with the occasional water feature. It is a bit short and tight, but it is definately better than some others around town (eg Vic Park) for the same price. I do agree that it is difficult to navigate and I was glad I was playing with a regular.
I really found this a fun, but narrow course. Don't try and pound your drives as hard as you can, practice getting it straight on the fairway.

I also have recently returned to ashgrove after a long sabbatical, having heard that the layout had been changed and much improved. If anything they have made it worse than before but nothing has really changed. Upon arriving at the course i immediately thought i was in for a few hours of trouble and this was confirmed when the entire group had to trek up the hill to ask another group where the 1st green was and upon reaching the green it was covered in swarming ants. No one had a clue where to hit the tee shot on the next which was very dangerous without some proper visual markers. Although it had 3 or 4 stunning golf holes these were overshadowed by the poor condition and design of the rest of the course and most of the pins being cut in ridiculously impossible positions(must have been monthly medal the day before as it was the first weekend in september)put together with some ridiculous bunkering. Overall i rated this course very poorly and found the best view of it was in my rear view mirror as I was leaving.

After a good 6 or 7 year absence from Ashgrove our regular sunday foursome decided it was time to return, minus one who couldn't make it this day- and he doesen't know how lucky he was. Where can i start on this place, it was small, very badly designed and as the previous reviewer said quite dangerous. A completely unfair course where good shots are seldom rewarded and taking an undirect approach{miles from the fairway} can sometimes be advantageous. $20 to play in the comp seemed like a sting and considering that a much quicker and enjoyable round can be played for a comparable price I would suggest that golfers look elsewhere. You won't see me back anytime soon.

It has been a little while since i last played ashgrove, and with good reason, It is a dangerous course. With the layout being so tight, there is no room for any miss hits, which 90% of the golfers that play suffer every round, it is the only time i have been HIT by a golf ball standing on the the green, been hit from the previous tee (3rd green, from 2nd tee). The par 3's are pathetic, and i've played on longer par 4's than there par 5. They've built a pathetic 18 hole course where they could have built a great 9 hole

Being in Brissie over the last few weeks i had a chance to play at a couple of local courses.
I thought Ashie was amoung the best of the six i played at. Its extremely tight and tough. Definatley for the accurate hitters. Not a paticullary long course it favours the short game players.
The best kept hole by far would have to be the 18th with a great lush fairway and brillant little approach to the green to be played. The easiest would have to be the 5th or 17th only being 250m each and par 4's (both pretty easy birdies).
I congratulate the groundsmen at this course and thank them for a great game at what i consider as one of Brissies best courses.
A brillant new 19th hole also improves the view over the course and adds to its appeal. I also happened to meet the golf pro while i was there he went by the name of Ben Styles, Brett (didn't get his last name) and Gareth Small (all really friendly great blokes).
THANK-YOU ashie what a rewarding experience. :-)

I had heard a few good things about Ashgrove GC so decided to try it one day on a whim. Lacking too much time that afternoon, i hired a motorised cart as well. $20 for unlimited holes, $36 for the cart with a $200 cash deposit... Supposedly they are getting a credit card swipe soon to eliminate the need for mass cash transfers. Rather expensive to start with I felt.
As i got in the cart, it has the part and labour cost stuck onto the windscreen of basically anything you can damage in or on the cart. Rather unneccesary and cheap in my opinion.
One thing i found about Ashgrove is that lacking too much room, they have made a number of holes sharp doglegs. On a bad day, this frustrated me to bits. Some of the greens were unsighted and small, with a very strange grassing. There was lots of grass cut very low so no dirt showed, except where the odd lazy cretin failed to repair their divot. The fairways were green, and for the most part in good condition except for a few patches of weedy grass.
I found myself looking into the bush and scenery more than any one hole, though it does have some pretty ones. A fairly basic pro shop with limited equipment, all added up to an average day after playing courses like Brisbane and The colonial in the past month or two.

This clubs on the go. Since my last round (the drought of 2003/04) the fairways have been irrigated, the club house and pro-shop renovated, the bunkers re-sanded and the greens are running better than any in Brisbane.
I agree with the review by Johnfish. Don't bring your driver here and try to beat up this course, that will only lead to peril.
I'll guarantee that "young guns" will struggle here because you can't just walk up to the tee and knock the case off of it.
If you are looking to learn new shapes and new shots then this is your track. The wind here is the hardest of any in Brisbane to read as it swirls in the foothills and often two parrallel holes will play in opposite wind directions.
If you've played here in the past and have not liked it I recommend coming back and playing in a competition so that you can get a feel of this "new" course from the challenging new tees.

Ashgrove Golf Club has just gone under some new renovations and now you can sit out on the balcony of the clubhouse and watch the players come in from the stunning 18 th hole with ob on the right and water on the left. I only played there last month but it was looking in great condition. If your looking for a nice game at a good corse well the Royal grove is the one.

Ashgrove Golf Club offers a reasonable golf couse at a reasonable price. The club has recently changed the order of the holes. The fantastic long par 4 14th has been changed to a short par 5 1st hole. The club has claimed they are trying to better the CCR for their club competitions which has often come in at 4 below par. The greenkeepers (if there is more than one) do an ordinary job and the way the couse is set up if often a disgrace. The couse is also ruined by lack of sand in bunkers, and it is like playing off a cart path. Greens are impressive yet lack any pace at all. Six footers often have to be struck with great force.
Just about every par 4 on the couse is a dogleg and it lacks creativity. The best holes are the 8th and the 18th. This spectacular finishing hole features water on the feft of the fairway and out of bounds on the right producing a very daunting tee shot. The worst hole is the first hole since they change it to a par five. It is only some 60 metres longer and the green is a complete mess with only 50% of it being covered in grass (and we'll leave the bunkers out of this).
Most will find it quite a boring and repetitive course but everyone has different opinions so try it out for yourself, it should'nt set you back too much anyway.

Whilst I enjoyed the game there (its a tight and tough course), I didn't walk away thinking I must play here again.
The course is tight, the greens small - but well kept along with the fairways. Good course management. The staff and members all seemed uninterested or is that uninteresting.
Not on my play there list.

Unlike a lot of courses located in the Brisbane Metro you cannot walk onto the tees of "Royal Ashgrove" and blast away. This is a course that rewards solid short wedge players as opposed to long hitters. This fact is evidenced by recent trainee pro events where 2 under is the lowest winning score.
Don't be fooled by the distances on the scorecard, Ashgrove is about "Where to hit it" not "What to hit". That said, don't even bother playing from the white tees. Many of the best holes lose their impact.
Best holes are the 9th, 18th and the newly dammed 13th hole which provides a visually stunning shot that would not look out of place at any championship course.
The greens are small but well groomed and the sloped fairways make shot shaping vital. At around $25 for green fees this inner city course also offers a nice cold beer at the 19th and old style friendly members.
Bet you can't par it!

Yes, this course is too small. There's nothing that they can do about it because it's hemmed in on all sides by suburbia and doesn't have anywhere to really push out.
What they can do something about though is the poorly maintained fairways. There's been some attempt at impoving this with a new damn and improved irrigation system but the course basically feels like a suburban park that's had a few greens installed.
There are a few nice holes - the 11th and 18th are good par 4's. The 10th is a challenging par three especially off the blue markers. There are some really dud par three's though where you only need a half hit sand wedge to make the green - more like pitch and putt than golf.

Ashgrove 18 hole layout suffers from being crammed into too small of an area for an 18hole golf course. It seems to bend back on itself at most holes away from the clubhouse. A driver is only required on a few holes (only one par 5) and on most holes errant shots are able to be recovered. In saying that it has a couple of nice holes including the 8th formally the 18th, the 14th formally the 1st (this hole once featured in Brisbane's top 18 holes) and the 18th hole is a nice finishing hole and will get better as the young trees on the left mature. The greens are well maintained and offer consistancy right through. In all a very friendly club and relatively cheap at around $20 midweek.

Played this course today. Wow very unforgiving and sometimes unrewarding as well. Defiantly suits a short game player and requires straight accurate hitting. Some crazy green placement where it was very difficult to even tell where the green was. A course that I think would be eisier to play after a few rounds there but for a once off it was difficult and a little frustrating. Lots of GUR and a few hole it was hard to tell where the fairway ended and the rough began Greens i found where to quick but where consistent. 15th & 17th Crazy.
