I last played Asquith in June of 2010, after playing Junior Pennants there over 10 years ago. This course is very hilly and is kikuyu all the way, so plays much longer than the card suggests. Lots of elevated tee shots on offer here, the 1st, 7th, 9th, 10th, 12th, 13th and 16th to help the ego and are mostly par 4’s. A good water carry is on offer on the 13th for the second shot. Also a very cheaky, downhill and short par 3 – 13th at 115m is a teaser if you under or over hit the green. I definitely remember a few holes in my recollection of the course, but overly not all that difficult IMO.
Some criticisms were that I didn’t find the par 3’s all that strong, except for the long par 3, 3rd playing at about 185m. However some good par 4’s packed a strong punch, especially the 4th (that I double-bogeyed), 5th, 16th and definitely the 18th – hardest of the lot. I also found the 2nd (Par 4, 320m) a bit silly, with a large tree in the left-hand side of the fairway, 40m short of the green. This was almost as bad as the 17th hole at The Cut! Next time I’ll make sure I hit a BIG fade.
Asquith wasn’t that bad a course and I got good reciprocal access there with my home club, but I’d treck to other courses in the area such as Muirfield, Castle Hill, Avondale, Pymble or Oatlands if you want a better test/quality of golf course.
