At 5458m, Atherton’s par 70 course offers a good challenge for the serious golfer and a friendly atmosphere for the social player. The course was in great condition with fairways lush and offering a good lie throughout. Depending on the amount of exposure to the sun, some greens were spongey but others fast and hard. The back nine consists of some great holes where accuracy outweighs power and a couple of shorter par 4’s which tempts the big hitter. Water in play on a few holes on the back nine also makes a good challenge. At $25 ($10 Mondays), Atherton is great value and an interesting layout maintained to a high standard makes this course a must play for any golf enthusiast.

What a great 18 hole layout they now have, after the official opening in march 2005, having played Atherton and most of the FNQ courses, a number of times, I do believe this is one of the best public course's in FNQ. alway's green with abundant trees and good sized and true green's. course is a mixture of par 3's, 4's, & 5's, some short, some long and some tricky requiring thought and the ability to play to a certain length for the next shot. Atherton's first 10 holes are pleasantly undulating with beautiful tree lined fairway's and some with elevated green's and sloping fairway's, the remainder of the course is flatter but interesting with water and narrow fairway's. Motorised or pull buggies are available from the Clubhouse, costs are $25 plus buggy.

Enjoyed myself enough to play twice!

Regular 11 hole comp was recommended by ex-member met in Cairns. Most holes are fairly straight forward although the sloping fairways and big, old trees on the first few holes require local knowledge (the reason I played twice).

Plenty of grass on the fairways, as you would expect, and the greens are true.

Renovations were in progress and new holes were being built to turn the course into a full 18holes. The back nine was/will be flat except for the tricky short par four that tempts the big hitter to cut the dogleg at his peril.
