Excellent course for an early 9 hole practice round but beware the early morning insecticide routine. They won’t let you tee off until 6.15am despite the fact they take online bookings from 5.45am. It seems they usually spray on Wednesdays but could also do so on other mornings. They are currently undertaking major work between the 6th and 7th so these holes have been considerably shortened.

Played after work on wednesday afternoon. Great little course with a good variation on holes and very nice conditioning and bunkering. They are currently putting a pond in and looks to be a hazard that will be the bane of many of its members, look for all Balgowlah members to gain 2 strokes in the next few months on their handicap.
Very enjoyable, recommended!

Course was pretty good, but was very crammed for a Sunday morning.

Really nice little 9 hole course, played on Sat, had to wait 30 min before we could tee off, and ended up joining another 2-ball which was good fun. The course itself has quite unforgiving tree’s and bush on the road side as you lead up through the first few holes, if you go left you’ve lost your ball. Accuracy off the drives is really needed, and there are some nice little Par 3 testers, but mostly par 4’s (I don’t think there is a par 5 on the course). Green’s are very fast so judgement of speed/distance is critical to making your birdies or pars. Overall a very enjoyable hidden away course.

Good little course, quite a tight layout but the fairways are in good condition and the greens are fast. Not too much waiting – we made it around the 9 holes twice in 4 hours. A few fairways are shared or very close to eachother so its best to stay alert! Absolute bargain at $20 for 18 holes on a Sunday morning.

Agree with Gameboy Dec 02.

We played Sun 5th July, 2009.

Great value, well kept 9 hole course. Once you know what to expect (short course), the not much to complain about. Greens and fairways in great condition.

Will definitely be back.

Excellent course for an early morning nine holes before the crowds build up. The fairways had just been cut and the greens were in top condition which made for a very pleasant round. I enjoy the course layout with the elevated first tee inviting a good drive down to the front of the green. The long par 3 third hole and long par 4 sixth are also a feature.

Liked the course, nice greens. We spent more time waiting to tee off on each hole than playing whuich did put us off.

Pro shope guy was very pleasant i would recomend him anywere.

I don’t think i would play there on weekends again due to the fact of waiting for teeing off each and every hole. However will endoevour to play mid week one day.

Regards

KJ

Great little course. Well maintained fairways and greens. Would definitely play there again. Only nine holes but great value. We paid $18 for 18 holes on a public holiday when we booked on iseekgolf.com, a dollar a hole. Brilliant!

Had a lovely hit at Balgowlah on Sunday morning 6:42am tee off. The course was wet with dew but there is nothing better than being the first or second group off the tee.

Great little course for a social round. Played on a Monday and booked through iseekgolf. What they didn’t say on iseekgolf was that the Club charged the 9 hole price for 18 holes on a Monday, so the discount for booking on line cost more that fronting up at the club. That said the course condition was excellent with both fairways and greens in good order.

Great friendly course. Some holes are a bit challenging with some tight greens, but overall had a pleasant time. Outgoing and courteous staff. Played with a local group that were kind enough to let me play along. This is a course which will hone you short game and fine tune your long irons. There are a couple of holes that you are able to pull out your 3 wood and let it rip. I’ll be back!

Played here Monday 20/3/06 and played off blue championship markers, and it measured 2046m Par 32 with 3 Par 3s measures 95/115/215m and SIX Par 4s ranging from 260-410m. This course is in excellent condition, from the flat teebeds, to the Kikuyu grass fairways, to the greens, to the great bunkering and to its facilities. I have played all 9 holes courses in Sydney recently, and Balgowlah along with Woollahra are by far the best, in terms of quality, condition and challenge.

A lot has changed in the bunkering, with quite good bunkering to protect the small greens on ALL holes, as I recall. The best holes I feel is the 215m 3rd, with bunkers greenside and water left and over the back, accuracy is paramount. The longest hole is 411m 6th hole, with its shared 5th fairway is about 40m wide for about 160m. Holes 4/5/6 are all par 4s of different lengths, so you donít hit the same club. The 300m 7th hole is narrow and has a blind tee shot over the hill from the elevated T. The par 4s offer the best challenges, while all 3 par 3s are totally different in club selection and challenge. A great mix of holes, on land bounded by residential development and a major arterial road (but a good layout ensures you are only affected by noise on 1 hole - the 4th tee).

Great little clubhouse overlooking the course, with great playing conditions and practice facilities. I have no doubt I will be back to play here on this very well maintained course. Weekday green fees are $18 for 9 holes and $28 for weekend 9 holes.

1st time at this great little course.

The fairways here are very well maintained and the greens were also in top condition.

The 5th and 6th are a bit scary (as mentioned below) but the shared faiwary is the size of a footy field and the wind was down so luckily I didnt have any problems there today.

The Club also has suprisingly good practice facilities for a small course..

All in all I'd definately rate this course as one of sydneys better 9 Holers.

Next time i only have half a day to play, I will be back here for sure...

Cost : $18.00 for 9 Holes

Time : aprox 1.5hrs (pair, 9 holes)

Balgowlah is a fun 9-hole course, just over the Spit Bridge from the city on Sydney's Northern Beaches.

The 1st is a friendly downhill par-4 which though tight at one point is pretty makeable. This is followed by two par-3's, the 2nd requiring no more than a pitching wedge, and the 3rd with water down the entire left side.

The 4th is a short par-4 with a tight green lined with trees. The slicer will invariably end up on the wrong side of these trees requiring a high lob over the top to get onto the green in two.

As the other reviewer on this page mentions, you need nerves of steel to play the 5th and 6th holes which share a fairway but play in opposite directions. An unfortunate slice on either one of the holes can occasionally find oncoming players.

The elevated member tee on the 7th is worth a sneaky look as it affords good views over the previous holes, and is the only way to see how far over the rise the green is. Then a short uphill par-3 8th and finally the dogleg left par-4 9th back to the clubhouse.

A fun course to play, good for sharpening up your short game as you only get the chance to take the driver out on two holes.

Very well maintained, and I've never found it too busy. Well worth a visit.

A well kept nine hole public course at the Start of Sydney's northern beaches. Greens and fairways are generally good. There are a number of holes where you feel a little bit scared as there are other golfers teeing off in your direction due to a lack of trees lining some fairways. Good practice green and nice views from the clubhouse make this an enjoyable way to spend a Sunday afternoon.
