Bankstown Golf Club

Sydney, NSW | User Rating: Rate-4 (4.0) | Add A Review

Bankstown is rated as one of Sydney’s top courses with 18 holes of challenging golf. The club was established in 1928 and is situated near the Bankstown airport and is wrapped by the Georges River.

The fairways are lined by mature trees that form a magnificent landscape and keep the fairways tight. Water comes into play on many holes although carefully placed shots will avoid any danger.

I have played Bankstown Golf course on a few other occasions and have found it to be a very nice course. It is by no means a difficult course, but for the price of the winter special (booking through iSeek Golf $35) it is very good value. The fairways are not in the best condition (many bad lies – bare patches), but I suspect this is due to winter and the grass not growing at it’s best. Other than that, the course is very well maintained.

I must say on this occasion, we encountered abuse from a member before we had even hit a ball and before we had even muttered a word. We were in an extremely unpleasant manner told that we could not tee off as they were members who played in a group of 20 every Friday morning, We were to let them tee off first and NOT to hold them up, as they had to go to work. I returned to the pro-shop to ascertain what he would like us to do (wait for all 20 to play first or hit off at our booked time)? In fairness, the Pro assured me I was to hit off at our pre-booked tee time and apologised for the behaviour of the "Member".

This was the first time I played this course, and I must say I was quite impressed. The course is extremely well maintained with lush fairways and fast undulating greens.Unlike a lot of courses in Sydney, the bunkers are filled with quality sand and are (like the entire course) well maintained, making it possible for the golfer to enjoy playing out of the bunker (should one unfortunately find themself in a bunker).

Bankstown Golf Course is a relatively flat course with tree lined fairways.

Great value when booking is made through iSeek Golf.

Nice course, well maintained. Worth a hit like a few other courses in the area (Liverpool, New brighton). Not quite the great layout like liverpool so it gets pipped there, however enjoyed more than New Brighton as there is less scrub to lose your ball in if you spray it off the tee. Is i little expensive compared to the other courses too. Ranking in order, 3rd place New Brighton, 2nd place Bankstown, 1st place Liverpool. They should add a local rule if you hit a duck you get to play your shot again.

I played here today (as I have quite a while in the past) at the invite of a member. I played and scored reasonably well.

It is a very well maintained course with nice fairways (and a little reminiscent of a north shoreish style like my club), nice greens and good bunkers, but there is a bit of a sameness about it (nearly every par 4 and 5’s runs east/west and most are the same length and most par3’s run north/south) which I found to be quite boring. Accordingly, I wouldn’t become a member here.

My favourite holes are the par 3, 3rd on the front nine (a fade shaping par 3) and par 5 12th on the back nine (for risk reward), but there aren’t many memorable holes, which I think is the mark of a course. The course is not terribly difficult, however, you must hit it very straight everywhere to minimise your score.

While the fairway condition is possibly slightly better (but not greens or tees), it is not a pinch on New Brighton in my opinion, which I played last Thursday and is just up the road. Bankstown’s clubhouse is very nice, but the practice range area facilities are poor.

If you happen to have a game here, make sure you also have a game at New Brighton (which I played last Thursday who have a good practice fairway if you want a hit a few balls before your game) as it is a far better layout and certainly much better value for money in visitor comp fees and membership fees.

Bankstown is probably 4 stars overall, but for comparative value given New Brighton, I’ll give it 3 and a half, which could be slightly harsh.

Made a tee time reservation through iseekgolf.com at 0700 for a 0845 tee time. I didn’t get my confirmation email until about 0815. Called the club but they were understanding – no dramas about rescheduling for later – ended up about 20 minutes late.

Getting to the Bankstown GC is so easy – just off the M5 motorway. Its situated in a sort of industrial area but don’t let that put you off. Playing Bankstown is well worth the effort, especially at $49. It is a beautifully laid out course with lovely tree lined fairways with ample shade for those walking. The course is easy for walkers, despite its length. The condition of the course is excellent – the greens and fairways are immaculate. The difficulty of the course will test the best players. As I am not the best, I always spend a fair bit of time in the trees and rough. Don’t go there – rough is deep and lots of bark, leaves and branches make it tough to find your ball let alone be able to play anykind of shot. Best to just get back to the fairway quickly.

Only thing that bugged me was that I encountered maintenance crews on about the first seven holes.

Average hacker, loved the course. Fairways and first cut in excellent condition, good greens and plenty of sand including mid fairways. I used just about every club in my bag thanks to GPS in cart. Geat day out and good discount price with cart… $52.00

Even better than the first time I played here. Fantastic course all round.

recent $20 increase in fees is sharp that is up 50% in one hit. Course is very well maintained, though it is mostly straight and flat, if you hit straight you can massacre it but if you hit into the trees , there is hardly any escape. it can be very difficult on a windy day..

greens were in great shape

tree lined fairways added to degree of difficulty

very nice course

but

they let a sixsome and fivesome play – which was infuriating and when i asked at the end – the person in the culbhouse could not have cared less

The course is in beautiful condition considering Sydney’s lack of rain recently, the fairways especially. Some of the holes have a sameness about them, but that is overridden by the challenging nature of the course. I will return.

Wonderfully balanced and well maintained course.

It proved to be plenty challenging, yet there were enough holes that I played well on to have had a thoroughly enjoyable day. It’s not an accident that the course is in such good condition as staff are constantly seen throughout this course.

I had a rather slow game for a Monday and lost a few more balls than expected (even off a solid shot), but that is hardly the fault of the course itself.

The greens were fast and perhaps a little random at times, but given the number of people playing this wonderful course, it’s a joy to play. I would happily play here again.

PROS

  • Condition of course
  • Challenging but rewarding

Great course, long and challenging for both the low handicapper and the average player. Fairways in very good condition and greens were superb.

Make sure you can get yourself out of a bunker or else you’re in trouble. Constantly bumped into ground staff which shows they really look after the ourse.

loved it… turf in good condition all the way from tee to green. gardens look awsome and challenging but good bunkers. not much more to say, full credit to course staff.

Very long basic course that can test the ability but if you can hit the ball somewhat straight and long you can have a great day. The surrounds are timid but acceptable and besides the average size of the greens the run is quite good going.

What a course!! You really need to think about where you want the ball on some holes, like the 10th if your right no hope of hitting close to the pin, course well maintained a must for any golfer to play.

Been over 2.5 years since the last review, so measuring 5920m Par 71 Bankstown GC has 5 Par 3s ranging from 145m-185m, 9 Par 4s ranging from 320m-390m and 4 Par 5s ranging from 425m-495m. The par 4s are most challenging, especially the last two closing holes on both the front and back nines. The par 5s lack length and challenges/hazards, but the par 3s are overall quite good length and need different clubs for each of the 5 holes ñ with water and ësafeí green play needed as some pin placements are challenging.

Previous reviewer is spot on with the two types of greens here, with many 25m + putts if you take the wrong club for your approach. Greens were quite quick (even in the greasy conditions) but all were very true and in top condition, with the exception of the 10th and 11th greens with dead/sandy patches still under repair. Tee-beds and fairways were excellent. While playing I noticed many groundsmen busy trimming the fairways and rough lengths, with is a telling sign about the quality of the course.

Signature holes: 426m Par 5 12th, with a slight dogleg to the right with a wide fairway but water right, and new creek before the green, making driving it in two, a little hard to stop once over the creek, as bunkers surround the green. Also, the 340m Par 4 17th, is superb, with water covering 90 degrees to the left of green protected by 3 large bunkers.

Played here on 13/1/06 and paid $44 for weekday rates ($54 weekend rates) and $35 for a cart. A VERY well-maintained course with superb fairways, but green fees are a little on the high side. Suppose you pay for the quality. 4.5 stars

Bankstown is the sort of course where you can enjoy your game, but struggle to remember half of the holes without looking at the scorecard.

The course is absolutely flat, and EVERY fairway is tree lined on both sides. The fairways are quite wide, but there is little prospect of escape if you find the trees.

The par 5's are short and fairly weak, but the par 3's are good. The par 4's are mostly between 350 and 370 in length, so you find yourself hitting the same clubs quite a lot.

The only really unusual hole is the par 5 12th (the green is the one you can see from Milperra Road) which is 430 metres long, but with a large pond in front of the green. Big hitters will clear the water easily, but the rest of us need to lay up with an 8 or 9 iron.

What is notable are the greens. There are two varieties, small and narrow, or large with triple tiers and swales and the like. In both cases it is very difficult to get up and down if you miss them.

The course condition is excellent. Greens are very good, bunkers beautiful and the kikuyu fairways immaculate. The design is uninspiring, but the course condition gives it an extra ball on my rating.

Nice, old-style clubhouse, too.

A very well maintained course. Walking is easy but the course is very challenging. The trees lining the fairways extend up to the greens making accuracy very important. The greens are fast and undulating and water comes into play on 8 of the 18 holes. If you can play to your handicap here you can play to your handicap anywhere.
