OK, lets get this out of the way straight up – ‘royal’ Bero is a goat track, but then again it doesn’t pretend to be anything other than a basic council golf course.
The tees, fairways, surrounds and greens are nothing flash; in fact, at times during summer and winter they can be quite ordinary.
Quite bizarrely, the course has 11 holes! You can then repeat holes 1 to 7 if so inclined to get the full round in. It’s quite short and flat and has little trouble, which is what most ‘social’ or beginner golfers probably prefer.
The dress code seems to require footy shorts be worn!

I live in Sydney but travel to Newcastle often. Beresfield golf course is an excellent course for $13. There are several different holes ranging from 130m to 492m and some tricky water hazards. All in all and compared to some courses in Sydney and for the price its a great course to enjoy with friends and great for the beginner.

I started playing Beresfield about a year ago as it was advertised as the best for social players. What I found was a relatively easy course, and in general it is kept in very good condition. There is a very laid back attitude throughout the course (which can encourage some pretty ordinary behaviour from some social players), but there are certainly plenty of challenges, especially for the average golfer. The course must be alright, because I keep going back there regularly even though I live about 30 minutes away.
Most of the greens are unprotected by bunkers or other hazards, while the fairways are lined with only small trees with very little undergrowth. Together this provides a large amount of forgiveness on those wild drives and misjudged approaches. An average golfer can quite easily come away with 5-6 pars from the 11 holes.
My pick of the holes would have to be the short par 4 3rd hole. Here you must drive over a creek 2/3 of the way to the hole. A dam to the right and thicker grass and trees to the left require that this drive goes pretty much where you intend. If you feel brave and take a driver off the tee you are even a chance of reaching the green and putting for an eagle.
With reasonable green fees, the promise of a decent score if you play well, and no problems getting a round on any day, I recommend giving Beresfield a try if you are in the area. And it is only $8 for a round after 3 pm.

Beresfield is a cheap not too flash course. But value for money it’s pretty good. And the fact that it’s located just past the end of the Sydney – Newcastle freeway may it easy to find. Although if you decide to play 18 holes, you finish up a fair walk away from the clubhouse and car park. Being 11 holes, you do the first 7 again. From there your almost ‘walking through’ other peoples games.
