The BITS Country Club is by no means a difficult course to play which makes it ideal for those learning to play. I reckon it has probably the best hole in the Gladstone region (Hole 12) due to the challenge it presents along the way with its water hazard down the right, road down the left, skinny fairway and green surrounded by bunkers.

What lets the course down though is that it is owned by the council, so the ground staff can often be found out on the course turning on the water for the greens during the day, which does let it down.

The course will be getting overhauled with these plans of a resort going in. But when that begins, who knows.

PROS

  • Great course for beginners
  • Hole 12

Cons

  • Council Owned

BITS is a 13 hole course, with holes 1-5 being played twice to make up the 18 holes. It has a reliable water supply from recycled waste water, meaning that it doesn't suffer as much as surrounding courses during the dry season.

The course itself is a pleasant walk, but could not be described as a strategic test of golf. Quite a few holes have been pinched in at the driving distance by plantings of trees.

The best holes are the 5th, 6th and 12th. The 5th requires a drive over a tree about 150m from the tee, and turns left to a nicely set green near the clubhouse.

The 6th is a short but demanding driving hole, requiring a tee shot between two clusters of trees at about the 220m mark. Just to make it interesting there is a water hazard on the right hand side.

The 12th is a short par 4. The card says 295m, but it seems to play longer. OOB down the left hand side doesn't really come into play, but the water hazard down the right hand side does. It starts about 150m from the green and at that point the fairway is perhaps 50m wide. It then cuts in so that the longer the drive, the narrower the fairway. The second varies from a 6I to a short pitch depending on how brave the drive has been.

In summary, don't make a special trip to play BITS, but if you're in town there are worse things you can do with a couple of hours.
