Time for an update and not sure how it rates as a 5-star "golf at its absolute best" but Burra measures 5682m Par 72 with four par 3s ranging from 99-182m, ten par 4s ranging from 280-405m and four par 5s ranging from 418-458m.

Course has a mix of natural / winter rye grass fairways which were a little dry in patches. There is some rye/natural grass in the rough with patches of couch grass around the bunkerless greens. There are couch grass greens which were dry and yellow in patches. The small tee mounds have couch grass but there are no bunkers on the course.

Interesting flat, easy walking short tree-lined layout sees you play holes 1-3, then you cross over the busy Barrier Highway (careful as vehicles are travelling at 110km/h) to play holes 4-13, then cross back over the Barrier Highway to play holes 14-18.

Highlights include: the 386m straight 5th (index 3) with a dam 15m short right of the bunkerless green and a water hazard across the fairway 80-120m out from the green; the 293m slight dogleg left 6th (index 9) with an OOB fence on the left and the same dam in the right trees at the dogleg corner; the 182m 15th (index 8) with an OOB fence on the left; the 375m straight 16th (index 2) with a wide fairway and hollows on the left of the green; and the 351m slight double dogleg left then right 18th (index 4) which plays uphill for the last 100m out from the green.

The par 5s are quite short and weak here. There are about 7 holes where the flag is not visible from the tee mound as there is a slight dogleg, but apart from this most holes are fairly straight forward.
Burra is a small town in the northern Mount Lofty Ranges with around 1000 people. The course is similar but not as varied as Clare which is about 30 minutes south.

Burra is one of only three grass green courses from the Adelaide plains to Port Augusta – the others being Clare and Balaklava. Also, Burra is the last grass green course on the Barrier Highway travelling east on the Barrier Highway to Broken Hill.

Played here 23/09/2011 with $20 green fees. Course is 1km north of the town centre on the Barrier Highway. Clubhouse has views over the first hole and there is no full-time professional in town. Burra is a State-heritage town and can be reached in a day-trip from Adelaide. Nothing special, but worth a hit.

the first thing that strikes on this fine country golf course is the long well manicured fairways, the grass here is kept extremely well, being regularly mowed and watered resulting in a course that is not only a pleasure to play upon but also to walk round. the greens themselves are very good, tricky in camber making for some challenging putts, but still a pleasure to use with very good ball speed as opposed to the regular sand greens. 8it is a challenging course with a few interesting doglegs and each fairway is bordered by small trees making it tricky should you clice or hook slightly. and also with a couple of short holes tempting you to try for that ever elusive hole -in-one! all in all a great course well worth the detour should you be passing with the clubs.
