Burswood Park Golf Course

Perth, WA | User Rating: Rate-3 (3.5) | Add A Review

In 1895 the Perth Golf Club, the first established in Western Australia, played on the Burswood site. In 1908 it relocated to South Perth where, in 1937, it became the Royal Perth Golf Club. Today, the Burswood Park Public Golf Course occupies this historic site and presents players with a unique opportunity to play exhilarating golf with the City of Perth skyline as a backdrop, in a delightful riverside setting. Burswood is in all respects a challenging course, with nine lakes and two creeks coming into play on fifteen holes.

Player facilities are the best in Perth and include superb locker rooms, Pro Shop, licenced Cafe, Sprig Bar and Function Centre, day-night driving range, chipping and putting greens and parking for 200 cars.

The Burswood Park Public Golf Course is open to play 365 days of the year. From November to March the course is open to play from 6.00am to sunset and from April to October between 7.00am and sunset. The day/night driving range and practice putting and chipping greens are available up to 8.00pm Monday to Thursday and 7pm Friday.

A reasonable course that could be a lot better, but the owners are probably making enough money from the casino. Interesting to see what happens to it with the new footy stadium going to be built soon in the area.

The first nine starts and finishes a long way from the clubhouse, so course design is a bit short in some areas. The course is in good condition but its regular use by tourists mean the greens feature pugs and rounds can be slow.

Not overly hard or long, lots of water and bunkers. The par 3 11th is probably its feature hole although it can easily be parred.

Played midweek the morning tee-off, great course, great facilities.

But severely rushed to get thru the course.
(Hate to see it on the weekend.)

Excellent course, well set out and challenging water hazards and bunkers.
Ten of us booked a week in advance and payed for 18 holes + plus carts came to $56 each.
However after the front 9 each of our groups were told we had to go straight to the 15th hole as they claimed we were holding people up by slow play even though there was not another group for at almost two holes behind us at all times.
We are all well seasoned golfers and most of us play 42 rounds a year and this has never happened at any other course before.
We were not allowed to play the other 5 holes after and were refused any refund. It is a nice course but it’s not nice enough to be worth that kind of treatment, I would highly recommend that people avoid this course in favor of any of the other great courses around Perth where they respect the fact that you are filling their course.

Played 18/7/11 but due to time restrictions I only got to play 14 holes. A well set out course with enough water and bunkers to ensure that you stay on the mown stuff. The greens were generally fast and on many there is a fair bit of break to contend with ie the 2nd has a large valley through the middle making a great putt from front to back. The course is well covered with grass and the bunkers had plenty of sand and it is well presented but I have to mention the number of unrepaired divots and lob marks on the course, too many players being lazy and not taking the time to repair these with some areas in the front of greens looking like war zones.

Great practice facilities with driving range, 2 x putting greens and a pitching green; pro shop staff friendly and accommodating. A flat track so the walk is easy.

This is a really nice course but its days are numbered with the state government planning to build a new stadium on the site so I’m glad I got to play here before it’s gone

Played on 6/10/10 . Value for money at $26 . Found the course to be of a very high standard on the day , exellent course layout with the water and bunkers coming into play a lot. Favourite holes were the 3rd,9th,11th,15th and the 18th. Will be back there soon to play another 18 holes , excellent pro shop and clubhouse facilities.

Can’t wait to head back over to Perth for another round!!!

Walked in Thursday for a game Friday and got the last available spot. Two cashed up Asian gentlemen were unable to get a round not having booked. So be warned. Plenty of corporate groups out in force plus vouchers for free 18 holes given out with each round. Made for a busy day. About 5 hours to play 18.
Course is attractive and in good nick though greens are soft and quite a few plug marks left unrepaired especially on the back 9. Managed to keep the same ball till the eleventh (where I under clubbed) so the hazards, though numerous, are avoidable.
Price is reasonable, staff friendly and facilities great. As it’s the first WA course I’ve played,(not counting Nullabor Links!) can only compare to the Eastern States. Similar to some Tweed courses in standard and difficulty. Early morning off the first is straight into the sun. Plenty of water birds and scenery.
Close to casino and race track if you dare. Definitely worth a round but plan ahead.
The Relic.

Played 25th Feb 2010.
Played exceptionally nice. Pro-shop had given us free 9holes voucher before we started, stating some greens had suffered burst water pipe & wont playing particular well. Played throughout & didnt feel any greens were severely affected which is really nice. Might of stemed from previous post/review here, which is great to see Courses been pro-active on these important issues.
Anyway, front 9 (eventually) playing like it should. Superb open fairways with hints of entrapment with many tricky elevated greens. Front 9 greens are in fantastic nick, true, excellent lines, minimal pitch marks(PLAYERS need to maintain level of repairs), good speed. Playing good golf & you’ll shot nice scores but little waivers here & there will cost you. All greens reachable in regulation so heat up the putter because the great greens wont make it easy.
Back 9 is the usual consistently good. Getting over 10th & 11th helps most off to a good start. 17th & 18th provides very competitive finish with definite birdie chances on the last (Par5).
Overall, playing as a top course in WA & long may it last as the setup, pro shop, superb practice fac, putting greens, etc are pleasure for Public Course.
Green Fees are excellent value, think we paid $22.50

We played recently and the greens were atrocious. I think it’s common courtesy for the proshop to advise when you book that the greens have been cored and sanded so you are informed and can decide if you want to play or seek another course.

No danger of that here from the money hungry rex hunts.

And if you want a refreshment at half time be prepared to cop it sweet right up the ginger as they know how to charge.

Burswood Golf Course has some good holes, the 3rd, 11th, 16th, 17th and 18th spring to mind. The greens are elevated and well bunkered unlike the sister course Maylands that is on the other side of the river and lacks bunkering. The Par 5 3rd of over 500m long is arguably the signature hole, as is possibly the par 3 11th, which is all carry at 170m. It gets quite windy at Burswood so be prepared for a links-like experience if you hit off in the afternoon. You must keep the ball low and hit the right clubs into the greens or the bunkers will come into play.

Burswood also unfortunately suffers from a lot of traffic and usage, due to its close to the city location and being close to the Burswood Entertainment Complex and its associated hotels. Lots of hackers on the course day after day can deteriorate the quality of the greens. In the bussiest summer months you may go there and hit the ball ok, but even lots of shorter putts result in lip outs and untrue bumpy rolling. Beginners though will enjow the slower speed of the greens and the chance to hit shots over hazards, perhaps for the first time. Despite being easier courses, I still prefer Maylands and Whaleback due to the better course conditions.

The practise greens and driving range are ok, however you must hit off mats as there are no grassy areas to practise. The view is good of the city and Burswood Entertainment Complex. Its a god course to play every now and then.

PROS

  • Reasonably price and close to the city

Cons

  • Busy most of the time, slow bumpy greens

The signature hole of the course, is the par 3, 7th with a lake surrounding. Makes for a tough hole especially if tee and wind conditions aren’t favourable, which they weren’t the day i played!!!! Most of the tee boxes give you a splendid view of the city and river however this hole in particular is right on the swanee.. I also loved the 3rd, the 10th and the 17th.

If you are heading over to WA, then get some clubs and have a round, it is well worth it.

Open layout with plenty of water and bunkers. The man-made rocked lined “creeks” are purely to attract tourists though, and the plentiful pug marks on the greens give the true public course indicator. The front nine is rather short apart from the long third hole with a small green surrounded by water. The short sixth was even shorter on the day with a temporary green. The back nine is certainly a better mix, the signature holes 11 and 18 a real test when the arvo breeze is in. Perhaps they could do away with the large array of practice greens and get the front nine to a more acceptable length. It sure is a long walk from the 9th green to the clubhouse

Loved this course! I played it for the first time today and was reasonably impressed. The layout is quite open, and yet narrow at the same time with the bunkers and water hazards.

In addition, the course is very well maintained by the ground crew, and having to pre-book a time to tee off ensures that the game flows with minimal delay and waiting.

This course would have to be up there with some of the best public courses in Perth. I will be back!

I was very impressed with the layout of the course I thought it was brilliant. Very good value for money. The fairways were well shaped and the greens were quite consistent throughout the course. The most challenging par 3 I thought was the 11th with is basically an island green with no same option. I would recommend this course to anyone who wants a challenge.

The course is always in good nick and has some challenging holes. The 2nd (over the water) is a test of nerve for a beginner but is great fun. The one downside is the greens tend to be a bit of a haven for the many water birds and they’re not afraid to leave their calling cards…

this course is always in good shape. a challenge is always provided with some very well designed holes. the best holes on this course have be holes 3, 7,11,13, and 18. this course allows golfers room to avoid the water hazards and the short distance provides the opportunity to go low.

There are lots of bunkers and hazards, which come into play. I played here in high wind and found it very difficult. Recommended

I played this course today and I am actually very pleased with it. It is a very scenic course with plenty of water and bunkers to challange everybody. Although there are building sites arround some of the holes, they are never close to the actual course and this dosn't make any difference.

I strongly reccomend this course for everybody who wans value for money

Measuring 5111m Par 68 championship and 4688m Par 68 from the social mens marker with 6 Par 3s ranging from 125-155m, with 10 Par 4s ranging from 200-350m and two Par 5s about 245m in length. All distances from the white social mens markers. The course is well maintained, but lacks the x-factor. Some par 4s are drivable and the par 5s lack length. The par 3s are probably the most challenging, with bunkers protecting all greens. The fairways and tee-beds were quite good. The greens were a little two-paced, but still gives a nice roll. The water hazards are scenic but never really comes into play on the front nine. However, this changes on the back nine with water playing a large part of club selection on the 10th, 11th and 18th. The 18th is one of the better finishing holes, that offers water on the right all the way from tee to green and bunkers in front of green. Nearly (missed by 1 metre told from playing partners), reached the green in two after hitting my 3 wood 199m over the water, but falling short and stuffing up the back nine.

Played here 24/2/06 and paid $25 green fees for 18 holes. Not bad value, but is the most expensive course Iíve played in Perth. Lots of development around the front nine, that makes the course shorter than it used to be, according to the locals I played with. Will like to play here again if in Perth again, but out of this, Collier Park and Wembley, the latter is the best course/value.

Great course! Lots of bunkers and water! Very well set out!

Just watch out for week days as some corporate events allowed to over run normal Golfing Rules like playing through etc, etc

Some 4 groups of 4 were held up behind a group of 20 and it took 2 hours to play the first 6 holes! After which we all went home! So the 18 holes planed and paid for were droped.

Very nice place to play.

I enjoyed my 9 holes at Burswood, it's a great course with lots of water, so if you like water shots then it's the course for you. But there are some short shots in there with no challenge.

I played the back 9 holes at 2pm. It was very windy and the ball was getting tossed around in the wind quite abit.

I decided to walk the course and enjoy the lovely Swan River scenery. Recommended.

The course is not bad, it was its bad patches of grass in some areas.

The greens are well upkept.

Someone pinched my ball and i was annoyed so i chased them and told them what i think of them. Partly my fault cause i got a bad wind gust of my drive and it swung the ball onto another fairway.

OVERALL - good

I use the Burswood driving range a few times a week. Its a very good driving range indeed. Its right along the river with a great view of the city and the casino.

NEGATIVE - the prices are quite steep.

65 balls - $8.50

100 balls - $12.50

150 balls - $15.00

But you can ask for the frequent user driving range card and after visting the driving range 10 times you get 2 free buckets of balls. Great idea

OVERALL - very good

The back Nine has two interesting holes!

The 10th and the 18th! Both pose interesting out comes although the 10th is the best and after watching only 3 groups of 4 go through, I counted a total of 36 balls lost to the water including 4 of my own! (the rain didnt help)

Overal a good course ideal for the driver!

Burswood Park Golf Course is located just a couple of minutes from the Perth CBD area, and offers some spectacular holes. It's about $22 for weekdays and $33 for weekend (walking), but they have regular specials/coupons in the local papers promoting discount rates for carts. Need to book regardless of weekday or weekend to get on.

The course has changed a bit over the past 10 years or so. Now with it's own dedicated clubhouse and entrance, the course has also had to be redesigned somewhat to accommodate the clubhouse.

The front nine is playing towards the Burswood hotel, and the first real challenge comes at the 3rd. A very long par 5, with a third shot that may require a mid iron into an elevated green. And perhaps one of the more difficult greens to attack as well. The front nine has a few shortish par 4s, so for the long hitters, quite a few birdie opportunities.

The back nine plays towards the Graham Farmer Fwy, and is affected more by the wind. The 10th being a daunting tee shot for drawers of the ball, but an excellent eagle opportunity for the long hitters. The 11th would have to be the signature hole of the course. Three tees to play from, at about 160 from the tips. All carry over water to an island green. Left, short and long will defn end up in the drink, and bail out to the right, the chip shot is quite difficult. Factor in the head wind, you'll need plenty of gusto

The back nine is a tighter driving nine, with plenty of trouble left and right to catch stray drives, and not as many short holes. The 18th is another signature hole. Reasonable par5 with water all down the right, and the fairway sloping left to right into the lake. A good drive can leave you with a long iron shot in, but bail out left of the green if need be.

A good public course that is quite well maintained. A definite chance to post sub-80s, and/or equally easy to shoot a blowout. Play a round in the morning and play another one in the afternoon, and you'll swear it's two different course. Well worth a round.
