I know this course very well and have played it consistently over 20 yrs. Its a nice track but nothing to write home about. Holes 5 and 6 are the pick.

My best piece of advice – Don’t go anywhere near it if its been raining. Possibly the worst wet weather course I have ever known.

PROS

  • Friendly club house

Cons

  • Horrible in wet weather

Whoa. Two people have rated this course a maximum 5/5. That just seems strange, given that this is a small members course set in a small country town and can’t possibly hold a candle to courses like Bonville, Barnbougle Dunes or Laguna Quays which I would consider warrant five stars. Having played this course last week it is certainly impressive when compared to other small country town courses but it’s nothing overly special.

The course is set in the town of Kew, and is bordered on one side by the Pacific Highway. It is basically a parkland layout, in average to good condition and with plenty of interesting challenges including bunkering to fairways and greens, water hazards and dogleg holes. The fairways and greens were OK, but the rough and surrounds were sometimes unkempt. Most of the surrounding bush was standard Aussie scrub (dry eucalypt forest).

Most interesting holes were the 4th, a short par 4 requiring either a very well struck tee shot or an iron off the tee due to water at about 200m. The par 5 11th with its prominent fairway bunkers and the par 4 18th and its water carry challenge from the tee (a challenge I failed…). I had a pleasant game but it’s not a course to base a special trip or holiday around.

Measures 5807m Par 70 with 5 Par 3s ranging from 120-185m, 10 Par 4s ranging from 325-390m and 3 Par 5s ranging from 465-515m. Course was in superb condition, although it rained steadily during my round, I was in awe of this course. Greens were reading true with good roll, fairways lush and with minimal, if any, divots, and teebeds an absolute treat, but needed a trim.

The course is fairly flat except the 1st, 17th that climb towards the highway. Many great holes here with water hazards (3rd, 5th, 6th, 7th, 14th, 18th) coming into play and all greens have bunkers guarding them (except 6th, 7th and 13th greens are bunkerless). You have the odd dogleg , uphill and downhill teeshots and many elevated greens.

Only criticism is that many of the par 4s have you hitting the same club off the tee, and the same mid iron to the green, as most are of similar length. I feel the longish par 3s here offer a good challenge with all having strategically placed bunkers.

Played here 27/9/06 and paid $22 green fees - felt like a steal. Great staff in the proshop letting me jump on before the school kids which have sport class every Wednesday afternoons. Friendly staff, makes this course my fave with Port Macquarie GC in the area.

what a tremendous course. this is definately the best golf course i have ever played on. hidden in the pretty valley just passed the kew intersection this golf course has alot to offer. not to hard yet challenging in some spots. every golfer should get around to playing this one. par 70 and not that short. few demanding holes. brilliant havent seen better . i love it with a passion. have a coldie with steve, the pro great guy. elmo in the pro shop always there to help your needs and big graham who can help you with anything. best golf course on the lower north coast.

What an oasis, if you`re lucky enough to get by the speed camera at herons creek you have saved $150 to start with. This course is deceptive, from the highway for a 15 handicapper looks like birdie material but with water and bunkers that Kingston Heath golf club would be proud of, hackers should be careful. A real test of fairway irons from non flat lies but greens that are well maintained. If you are lucky enough the course pro Steve (a great fella) will take you to the local to have a couple of coldies and give you a few winners at the trots.

For those who travel north on the Pacific Highway - this is the course you see after the Kew intersection on the left.

It is a friendly, forgiving course for those who want some fun but locals have it booked most mornings except Friday.

It has some water, but generally has good greens, a well stocked pro shop and friendly staff.

The signature hole in my view is the par 4 18th off a new tee that dog legs around the large lake, but straight hitters can fly the lake with 200 m hit and chip onto the green.

A good fun course.
