Cammeray Golf Club

IN: COURSE DIRECTORY | REGION: Sydney, NSW | USER RATING: (2.9) | Add A Review

Play first commenced at Cammeray in 1906 when a group from the Neutral Bay Lawn Tennis Club agreed to start a golf club in Cammeray Park.

The current layout was finally settled on in 1968 after the Warringah expressway was completed. The expressway caused a considerable area of the old course to be resumed together with playing fields that were the southern ends of the present 7th and 8th holes and a number of temporary layouts were played during the years it took for the expressway to be constructed.

After an aggressive tree-planting policy in the early days the current layout is a excellent test of golf from the members tees, requiring driving accuracy, pinpoint second shots and the ability to play from a variety of stances. The condition of the course is excellent year-round despite it having reasonably high volume traffic 7 days per week.

Its closeness to the city makes it a popular course for a quick nine holes morning or evening and with open days on Mondays and Wednesdays and Fridays, many affiliated golfers take advantage of the chance to play "Royal" Cammeray.

What a great 9 hole course, best I’ve ever played. I’ve played it a couple of times and it’s always been in great shape. Joined up with a couple of members on the third hole who could not have been nicer. Also a very friendly staff. A must play if you only have a couple of hours.

Played here Oct06 a few times as is local. Well kept course with some interesting holes but if you manage to hit the ball straight and over 160 metres then you can set yourself up for a birdie almost every hole.

If you stray you won't lose your ball but some recovery shots are required in the lightly tree lined fairways.

Some well placed trees makes you think a bit strategically for your approach shot.

Best hole would be par 3 6th which leaves not a great room for error as it is well bunkered, treed, sloped with a garden bed over the back.

Okay value at $16.50 for 9 but if you are looking for 18 pay $34 and pop over to Wakehurst.

Played here Tuesday 7/3/06 and played off back member markers, and it measured 2413m Par 33 or Par 34 2274m for associates with 3 Par 3s ranging from 95-165m and SIX Par 4s ranging from 290-400m. A very basic short game course with an unusual hilly layout that has its blind greens, but most of the holes run down a hill. Does attract slow players not too fond of calling through faster players like myself. Lacks a signature hole worthy of respect. Weekday green fees are $16.50 for 9 holes. A well maintained course with slow, pitch-mark ridden greens and thinly covered tree-lined fairways. The 9th green and the 5th hole (Par 3 80m temporary hole shortened from Par 4 311m) were under construction, so some news of improvement, but not enough to get me back there in a hurry.

For a shortish 9-hole course, Cammeray is very nice to play, being reasonably testing and diverse. One par-5, five par-4s and 3 par-3s. Fairways are fairly narrow, making accuracy important. Very convenient, being open to the public for decent periods of time on most days.

Played here for the 1st time today.

The Course itself is very well maintained. The fairways are tight but very well kept and are alot better than the norm for a public Course.

The greens are also well kept and even thouh they are relatively small, some have killer slopes are are fairly fast to putt on.

Built into the side of a Hill its a very up and down course where you are almost always shooting from either an elavated tee or straight up hill to an often blind green so there is alot of subtle variation.

I Loved the Course (for what it was) My main problem today was crowds. Im used to playing in th city and therefore crowds but today was a little too much.

After paying my Green Fees I walked to the 1st tee to find a group of two had just hit off. So I went back into to the pro shop to buy a drink. When I came out (minutes later) two ladies from a social comp on thier 2nd 9 had set up shop on the tee and decided they were up.

Although rather anoyed at starting this way I decided not to say anything as surely they would let me pass later on the course.

After they waited for the initial group to reach the green (402m) they hit 2 drives about 10 meteres each.

Almost 15 minutes (and ten odd strokes)Later I was able to hit off. (now with a crowd behind me).

Its didnt get any better from there on out. I then poliety waited and watched them tee off every hole whithout ever being called through till the 7TH (its a 9 hole course).

During the round a group of local school kids took to the course for thier sport day and decided to tee off from where ever they wanted. This didn't affect me personally but while waiting on the 5th I witnessed one of the many aguments between members and school kids as they tried to squeeze into and already banked up crowd.

To top it all off for the last 2 Holes a Group of 5 were playing with a film crew and hence setting up for every shot like there was an oscar in it for them.

As I played the 8th Hole (par4) there were 4 active groups on th Hole.

I great little course that I will play again sometime no doubt. Just watch the crowds here they turned what should have been a nice quiet midweek hit into an busy, pressure filled and often frustating round.

Payed $16.50 for the 9 Hole Social Round (Thursday)

I have nostalgia for Cammeray as it was the first course I ever played on. I have played here quite a few times.

There's something surprising about this nine hole course which will always bring me back to play. It's well maintained, predominantly up and down but with a couple of nice par threes thrown in and a dog leg par four, you'll find it a good mix and if you play to your handicap, you're playing well.

Cammeray is a 9 hole short course with some interesting holes. The course is undulating with some steeply sloping fareways. The course is certainly not boring and will maintain your interest for 2 hours. Most fareways are tree lined requiring some accurate driving. One Par 3 hole is only a shade over 110m but requires an accurate T shot dropping some distance to the pin. A difficult shot that will test your accuracy if you are to miss the bunkers. Played early in the morning at daybreak onwards the course has a certain feel to it that is good value for $16. If you are loking to have a short decent game it's good venue. On Sundays before 8am a roll up start applies. Clubhouse not always open for refreshments.
