I played a round here on 28 November 2011. Having read reviews here, I was open for it being a "country club" as it has been noted here. However, what I found was a club that has been working hard to develop itself on limited budget.

The front 9 was great. The fairways are benefiting from new irrigation thanks to a recent RAAF Base upgrade. There were still some areas of brown grass, but lots of green fairways as well.

The back 9 looked like the irrigation was still getting started – the fairways were a lot browner, with the sand a lot dustier.

The greens however looked immaculate for the most part – there were a couple of greens that had patches of dead grass which needs repair, but overall they were in good nick.

The club was quiet, not many people there (Monday is a non-competition day), which was great for a couple of hackers, as I didn’t have to worry about a slightly slow rate of play (due to bad skill more than anything). I found the staff (only one guy there when we started) very welcoming and accommodating for our needs, and very happy (and proud) about where the club is going (Grown one third in the past year).

I played here as part of an Our Deal voucher, and it included a voucher for complimentary green fees for two. I shall certainly be endeavouring to return to this club again.

PROS

  • Greens in good condition
  • Quiet

Cons

  • Back 9 still needs work
  • Lots of Jets providing airborne distractions

Terrible course don’t go….I only went because I got a Stargroupon discount and thought I might give it a go.
Personally I thought the fairways to be hard and in many places as bare as cricket pitches. This is despite the fact that it was deep into the Perth winter after a good rain. Further the rough is rough only in name only, for the most part it is just bush. Lastly the greens have got to be the second slowest in Perth I have played; only after Claremont which is know closed mind you. Total waste of time.

Further I don’t accept the argument that this is acceptable level of condition for a country club, there are plenty of good country golf clubs going around and this is not one of them!
There is really no hope for this course the soil out there is no chalky, and the maintenance program looks to be underfunded. There lack of a business plan and foresight reveals itself in the absence of a pro shop.

Can’t believe the ignorance of those knocking reviews! The only explanation is either stupidity, or false expectations.
This is a country club, though on the edge of the city, with an old country Clubhouse and the friendliest bunch of people this side of the Black Stump. We arrived without booking on a Wednesday and before we knew it we were playing with the locals in their Scroungers Day. Great fun. The course has suffered water problems which are not only being rectified with hundreds of thousands of dollars being spent but we were told they will be connecting to the AirForce waste water eventually and this course is going to be an Oasis.

unlike some of these other idiots on this page, i found this course to be very challenging with its narrow fairways and doglegs. the greens were in fanatstic condition and had a true roll.

considering the course is managed mainly by the members, it is in good condition. improvements are being made all the time especially on the watering side.

if you’re up for a challenge give it a go.

this course has a unique and challenging layout and is only 20 mins from joondalup and midland. the greens are small and will test.
there is generally no need to book and you certainly don’t get the hold ups that you experience at the crammed booked courses.
it is value for money and green fee players are welcome at this friendly club and if you are a member elsewhere will be made very welcome to join in the club competitions.
yes, it struggles for water in the summer but it appears small greenkeeper group and faithful volunteers maintain this course well given their budget
you will no doubt meet a member when your out there and you will be made to feel very welcome.
a private retreat to play golf and enjoy the surrounds.

Played Chequers in the Sat morning competition yesterday with idgolfguy as a visitor. The course is tight with many interesting dogleg par 4’s where accuracy is paramount off the tee.

I lost 3 balls from 3 wayward drives and dropped 8 strokes, but unlike many previous visitors who have blamed the course condition, I will simply state that you must bring your a-game to this course with your driver or you will be punished severely.

The greens are smaller than those of other exclusive private courses in Perth, but gave a true roll and were consistently paced.

Having read some previous reviews that bagged the course out, I felt more satisfied with the challenging layout and practice facilities than I thought I would. The members were also very friendly and keen to have me back again as a visitor. A good day out by all

I played this course about 2 weeks ago and was highly disappointed. The fairways were dry and sandy although the greens were pretty good seeing as though the fairways were lacking water. If you shank a ball into the bush don’t bother looking for it because you could end up with tick bite fever. Hardly any clubhouse well you couldn’t really call an old shanty shed a clubhouse.

Flat & narrow course with lots of dog legs and greens are quite small. Membership is reasonable but it is a bit of trek if you live in the city.

The damn is done, water is getting places never seen before and the improvements are all there to be seen. Water has been an issue but that the locals suggest should be a distant memory after the troubles of this last summer.

Chequers is only 15 minutes drive away from The Vines and worth a visit. It is a good country course that is more than a bit testing for the wayward.

The greens are faster than they feel and give you a good chance if you putt straight to the break zone.

Fairways are tight and a little sandy around the edges and some strategically placed trees will keep you thinking hard.

This is one club that really appreciates visitors and makes them welcome. If you roll up and there just happens to be a members comp going on, well be ready to become a part of it:)

If an overseas tourist Chequers is a close to town place to taste country golf near the city.

were do i start. this course is miles away from anywhere.

the tee box and greens on the this course would be classified acceptable, just!. the greens are too low, (mower height needs to be lowered) and some greens are showing signs of infestations from other grasses with several bare patches.

the fairways are non existant, barely no grass coverage at all, and what is there is generally weeds. then players have to dodge the spinklers and hoses.

simple layout, descent lenght

total waste of time. i didn't enjoy this experience
