I’ve played this course a number of times over the last few years and it’s one of my favourites in Tasmania. Although the conditioning isn’t as good right at the moment due to lack of rain, the location of this course really should make it one the most spectacular in the country. It is set out on a little peninsula in the Derwent river (still in the saltwater, tidal area) so that the course is wrapped around on three sides by the river. The views of Hobart, the river, and Mt Wellington are there on each hole.
The course itself is fairly open to the breezes blowing up the river, but is parkland in style with use of the river, two lakes and plenty of mature trees lining the fairways. It’s a suburban members course so call beforehand to see when you can play. It’s not overly long but makes use of it’s natural hazards, elevation changes and doglegs to protect par and to challenge players. I especially like the fact that a number of holes have you hitting uphill, across a slope or slightly downhill, requiring thought about which club to take. Combine that with what seems to be ever present breeze and overall length isn’t very important.
As mentioned the course is fairly dry at the moment, and a number of trees were missing, and others appear to be a little distressed, which did detract a little. The new lake in the middle of the course detracts from the aesthetics of the place too and makes the holes bordering it significantly harder, but when water access is the issue I guess it’s a necessary evil.
Last point of note about Claremont is that it is right beside the Cadbury chocolate factory and when the wind is blowing from that way, a lovely rich smell of choclate can be had.
When compared to other Tassie courses it’s not in the league of Tasmania or Royal Hobart but as the only 18-holer north of the city it’s a great hit.
