Clifton Golf Club

Toowoomba & Golden West, QLD | User Rating: Rate-3 (3.0) | Add A Review

The earliest record of a Golf Club in Clifton comes from a bank account statement dated 1927 when a small course was located on a public reserve close to Clifton. The present course was established in 1954 on a parcel of natural Cypress and Box Tree forest eleven kilometres west of Clifton and featured sand greens.
Ross Watson redesigned the course in 1980 and enthusiastic volunteers built Bermuda 328 greens under his expert direction. The subtlety of these greens is legendary and remains the major attraction of the pleasantly undulating ten hole layout. It is a course that rewards straight hitters and bites hard on the reckless.
Over the last four years the members have removed or pruned problem trees, planted a great many new ones, totally redesigned the irrigation system through a Community Water Grant to save water and energy, addressed the problem of clay panning and applied around two hundred tonnes of natural fertiliser to the fairways. Play can continue even after heavy rain due to the sandy nature of the soil and excellent drainage.
The diversity of trees and grass makes the course a haven for Koalas, several species of Macropods and a variety of Parrots and other birds. Ducks, fish and golf balls take advantage of the strategically positioned water storages.
Clifton is a friendly country club that hosts many charity and social days and offers a limited number of electric carts for hire.

The Clifton Golf Club provides a nice change to the busy city courses. What a challenge. The greens are absolutely superb as is the layout. Looks like some new tees are coming as well which will make it even better. A must to play.

Floods have had no effect on this course. Looks better than ever with great greens and improving fairways. Saw their web site www.cliftongolf.com Worth a look.

The most improved course within 50 klms of Toowoomba. Greens superb and tees are getting better. Fairways in best ever condition. A pleasure to play at present. You will not be dissapointed. Give it a go but do not expect to kill it with a low score.

My last visit to Clifton gave me a few surprises. All the old clay pans that made the place a bit of a goat track in the old days are gone, covered now by lush grass. Good rain and a new travelling irrigator have made the difference( along with some feedlot manure!). Tees are being reconditioned and levelled and bunkers holding new white sand. Increasingly noted as on of the best little courses in country Queensland.

Returned home for a school reunion & had the pleasure of playing this very interesting course after a long absence. Greens had just recently been upgraded & topdressed but were still to the high standard you see at this course. Fairways have improved despite the extreme drought & given a good season should be better than ever.
Lovely designed course taht never lacks interest.

Great little track in the best condition of its life. Will test anyones ability. Few have ever taken it apart. You will need a solid short game if you end up in the wrong places. Greens are superb with a challenge at every turn. Good placement on the fairway is the key with length not the most important requirement. Play well here and you will play well on most courses. A GEM. Try it sometime, you will enjoy the challenge.

I learnt to play golf on this course when it had sand greens, very little grass & bullheads & I loved it. If you could handle this it put you in good stead to play in any conditions. There was no other place closer to my heart than Clifton Golf Club. When I left the distict many years ago I realised how much the club & it’s members meant to me. I returned several years later on a visit & was amazed with the transformation that Ross Watson had created. Only three holes of the original course remained but the new holes were better than I could have imagined. First class greens instead of sand & prickles. Who could ever complain!

Dry times will always affect the fairways but if you want an good day with great people pay a visit to Clifton Golf Club & be blessed with good memories.

It has rained on the Downs at last so ecerything is green again. The greens have been scarified and cored in November (although they probably did not need it) and will play well by January. The automated water system is installed thanks to the Commonwealth Water Grant so some water saving can be made. Top dressing with compost has been done where grass growth is limited by clay panning. This course should look really good in 2008.

PROS

  • Friendly country club

Cons

  • Tees need top dressing and leveling

Once again the dry has hit this course!!

A great course when green.

The first is a par five that you tee off and cannot see where your ball ended up, hehehe did it go out of bounds to the left or continue straight??

A Great fun course with greens to match!!

One dam that seems to suck your ball in when hitting from a few different tees.

Have fun!

Good rains late 2005 have revived the course and the Community Water Grant will pay for major improvements. Looks easier than it plays. The challenge for the long hitters is in fact, the eleventh, par four at four hundred and ten metres with a fence on the down slope. Preferred lie prevails through the green. Best greens in country Queensland.

This small country course, 9 holes but two sets of tees offering a different option for each hole. Whlist the fairways are a but sparse in areas and sometimes require a tee-up rule, the greens are in very good condition. There are only a few bunkers and a dam. A reasonably short but the par four second definately offers a challenge to the long hitters playing about 400m. Overall worth a visit if your in the area as green fees are only $8.
