Cooktown Golf Club

Cooktown Golf Club is a nine hole course, with dual tees. Constructed on a natural sand belt, the course has been built in the tropical bushlands that borders Walker Bay and the Annan River.
Located beside Monkhouse Point, with the imposing Mount Cook as a constant backdrop, the natural beauty of the surrounds make this links type course a must for golf adventurers and holiday hackers alike.
However, there is a catch to all the beauty. This is the most northern golf course on the East Coast, and the wind in the dry season funnels up from the south east and blows around 20 knots most days.
New irrigation systems augment the natural wet season sprinklers, and tee boxes, greens and fairways are well presented all year round. Free drop from Echidna holes.

My mates and I play at Cooktown most weekends and are constantly trying to find ways to master this tricky par 65 course. With no par 5’s its not overly hard on most holes to hit the green in regulation…providing you hit a straight drive… Just about all par 4’s punish a wayward drive whether its a slice or hook…with no way of playing out of the thick scrub lining all fairways. If you can get away with bogeys on 3, 7 and 8 and cash in on the par 3’s (ranging from 110m to 140m) , you’ll score well. I’ve seen many a round where 7 and 8 ruin a good start to the day… Look out for the tricky, blind par 3 6th. If you cut the tree line slightly you’ll hopefully land near abouts the double tiered tabletop green. Lately the fairways have been maintained well and greens are lightning quick which makes for a good round. The water should receed by July or so after the wet season Cooktown recieved so you shouldn’t lose as many balls! A couple more bunkers and better maintenance of the few existing bunkers would give the course a bit more character. Overall tricky greens, narrow sloping fairways and 40 knot winds make for a challenging, picturesque round at the norhtern most course on the east coast of the continent.
