As a member I may be a little bias. The green fees are probable the best value for money going around in Geelong.

At the time of writing the greens are probable the worst I have seen in the 8 years I have been a member, but they are getting better. Once they get back to where they are normally they are along side the likes of 13th Beach and the likes.

The course has preferred lies on the fairways at the moment but with a little more rain that will soon change.

The front nine is great. You have to think where you are going to hit the ball of the tee and driver isn’t always the best option. I hit mine on only 2 holes (1st and 6th) the rest of the time it’s a 3 wood. The back nine is totally different. It plays longer, feels more open, and is relatively flat.

PROS

  • Great value for money
  • Course is nearly always well maintained
  • Can get on most days, just don't try saturdays

Cons

  • At the moment, Greens need improvement
  • Bunkers are inconsistent, some have good amount of sand others don't

Played here on the weekend with my brother. A very interesting and challenging course. As mentioned by previous reviewers, the front is up and down whilst the back is relatively flat. But I can’t really recall, other than perhaps 5th (which I ironically took a triple on)and not including the 3’s, a straight hole.
It was particularly windy and this course bares its teeth in these conditions. The 6th is a 520m Par 5, and it was playing directly into the wind (which given the orientation, it would most days). In those conditions, possibly the longest hole I’ve played. Happy to take the 6 and move on.
Unfortunately for me there are some very well placed fairway bunkers which can murder your score. Sand in them isn’t particularly nice to club heads either (plenty of little stones).
As with every other course I come across, it has struggled with the drought, but the fairways have good grass cover (except the 1st) and you can get a decent preferred lie. The greens are very good, undulating and challenging. It will test out your short stick skills.
All in all a very good course, and at ~$30 is reasonably priced. In its current condition I doubt they would want to charge more.

PROS

  • Layout
  • Greens

Cons

  • A bit slow (crowded) for the front nine on a Saturday

This course is great. I definitely would have to pop in for a round if i am traveling along the bellarine peninsula. It has nice lush fairways with a few doglegs and i enjoyed putting on the quick greens. Before you come to Curlewis practice your bunker shots because they can be extremly difficult.

Played here recently, great layout, friendly staff and a real challenge ( especially on a windy day). major problem was that you did not have to get too far in to the rough on the sides of the fairways for trouble. Grass was fairly long( about 300mm) which made finding your ball and then getting it out a bit tricky. Well worth playing gain . But make sure you’re a straight hitter

Selecting your driver from the tee on the first hole (and you will) your best choice, if you have a slice on demand, is to point left and fade your drive around the overhanging tree. if done well you will cut enough off the distance to have a comfortable short iron onto an elevated green that has some fantastic undulations and a rather nice bunker protecting the front left. AVOID IT! That is basically how the front nine plays, very creative design and never a boring moment. The par 3's you will want to hit in one because almost anywhere else can make getting par difficult. The back nine is a lot flatter but no less interesting. The bank nine has a slightly different stlye to the front with good use of what few hills there are. Not a single boring par 3 on the course and some very well thought out par 4's. The super dogleg on the front nine is a superb par 5 with a tight landing zone on the main corner. If you nail that landing zone you will be about 160 from the flag meaning even your 3rd shot is a not a gimme. All in all this course was very enjoyable and i think most who play it will be back

Curlewis on the road from Geelong to Portarlington is a surprise to people from out-side the area but not within. The original design is from Vern Morcom from that famous family involved on the sandbelt, and my understanding is that the Club under Mike Clayton are returning the feel of that early design. A undulating front nine with a flatter rear nine but a challenge to all. Good coverage of winter grass during the cooler months and couch coverage is good on tees fairways and surrounds. If anyone plays the course for the first time it will bring you back. They have a Par three tourney in November 18 par threea makes for a good day to see the course and enjoy, the Golf week is in early October quick greens over ten foot goood fun

If one has the golf course guide book you can play this course for 17 bucks mid week as much as you want. The green are big and true and fairways are wide inviting the driver to be used. There are good variety in the holes and the bunkering is well placed to enhance the challenge. The horseshoe shaped 6th is 520m and into the south wind is a real challenge. The 8th is one of the best short par 3s with an elevated green to hit and the wind nearly always going across you. Miss this green and it is hard to get down in two. The front nine is more interesting to play as it is more undulating and the nines could be swapped and the highway noise on a few holes can be annoying, but overall people wont be disappointed playing this fine course.

What an excellent course, well worth the drive from Melbourne.

Course layout was very good and good use of fairway bunkers too. Grass coverage was very good, the bunkers were consistant; very thin on sand which I prefer however many may may not.

Greens putted true, not the fastest but all consistant.

An enjoyable course that will appeal to many levels, not a monsterous layout but still plenty of challenges. Excellent value for money also.

Curlewis really is hidden gem on the Bellarine Peninsula. It plays very long from the back markers, and it is a very enjoyable and challenging lay out. Adult Green Fees are about $30, but students can get on for $12. Great value. A must play for everyone.
