Played the course for the first time in two years today, and the highlight of the course is without doubt the fairways. You would struggle to find fairways at any private club that come close to being as good as Dorset’s at the moment. The clubhouse has also had a makeover and is looking really good with a lot more room for both the public and the members of the golf club that plays at the course.

Having said all that, the course itself is still an easy one to play, which is geared more towards the beginner and high handicap golfer, however there are about four or five holes that make you think about shot placement. Not many bunkers or hazards, however the quality of the condition of the course is very good and the Maroondah Council have done an excellent job on making it this way.

PROS

  • Fairways are A1
  • Clubhouse has improved significantly
  • Good course to learn the game of golf
  • Friendly golf shop staff

Cons

  • Not many bunkers or hazards
  • Some monotonous holes
  • Low and mid handicappers may find course too easy

Played today and course has dried out significantly. Still some muddy areas but majority of fairways dry enough. Preferred lies still in play and greens have recently been cored and sanded.

An absolute bog heap in winter and no real warning from staff when you make the booking. I appreciate Melbourne has had a very wet winter however staff could at least mention if every fairway and green is surrounded by thick mud. Bring your gumboots.

I must say that Dorset has improved over the past year. I try to play here at least once a fortnight. As a previous post stated it does feel the effects of the wet on the back nine in some areas. However at the moment the course is as green as I have seen it.
The staff are always friendly (more so than Ringwood). There is currently upgrades being made to the clubhouse but these works have not affected the running of the course. Some of the regulars are extremely friendly and don’t mind if you are a hack.
As a newcomer to golf I have enjoyed Dorset, the front 9 is a chance to lose some balls and seems to be less affected by the wind however the back nine is more open and is set for the long hitter. There have been times that I have seen the flags blown out of the cup due to the openess of the course.

Overall a good course to play can get busy some times.

This course was where I began playing golf about six years ago, before I changed to Croydon GC. During the four or so years I was there, the council completed some good work to Dorset Golf Course. They put in significant drainage on most holes and a few more bunkers, as well as improving the area around the clubhouse.

The downside to their course however is the standard of the golf club that they have use their course. If you want to avoid politics, cheats, terrorists and people with little knowledge of rules and etiquette of golf, then avoid joining this club at all costs. There are way too many better options of joining a club nearby such as Ringwood, Croydon, Eastwood, Glen Waverley, the list goes on.

If your just looking for a social hit of golf on a good beginners course, then Dorset is ideal.

PROS

  • Good course for beginners at only 5100m
  • Some water and bunkers, but only on a couple of holes
  • Improved drainage around the course
  • Good mixture of mid to long par 3's, and short to mid par 4's

Cons

  • Dorset Golf Club Inc.
  • Lack of practice facilities
  • Car parking an issue on weekends and public holidays

played this course today and what a waste of time. Front nine was in terrible shape, fairways all ripped up as I think they are trying to fix the drainage. Very slow and no staff to keep things moving along. Play this course as a last resort and defiantly not on a sunday.

Cons

  • slow
  • wet
  • boring

AVOID. The back nine was closed today with the front nine being like a construction set, adding new drainage and watering system. Fairways very patchy with the greens being OK

This course has come a long way over the past few years. If you haven’t played there in a while, it’s well worth a visit. Most of the fairways are now couch and the drainage is much better than it used to be so it’s a lot better in winter now.

Still a fairly easy course, but apart from the new irrigation works the course is in great condition.

Not sure about the comment about easy to read greens, as particularly on weekends there are very few straight putts.

Good golf course to have locally, very short at 5099m, drainage problems- wet spots all around the course, nice lakes through out the golf course not bad for a lazy afternoon or just the beginner, i learned to play on this gold course, as well as Chirnside Park (very good golf course, but is very hilly and if not looking for a work out don’t go here)

I played Dorset on the weekend and found the course maintenance very average. I found through my game of 18 there was as much dirt and hard rock on the fareways as grass. The course layout is rather easy and generally straight to the pins. Alot of the greens have grafiti on them which must be due to the lack of security around the grouns. for public golfing standards it was a big time dissapointment.

Not a bad little track for a lazy 18 if you are in the area. It is a good course for a hit but it is not too challenging. There are better tracks around and I would not travel too far to play here.

Having said that, the greens on this course are always in great shape for a public course. This is a great little course for learners/social to get out and have a hit. Although it can get a little slow, it normally speeds up as the round progresses. I don't know why, it just does. Maybe it is because you don't strike a Par 3 until the 5th hole.

The course is generally OK for most of the year but be warned - do not play this course in the wet. There are some real drainage issues which are exacerbated by the fact that the back nine has been built over an old rubbish tip. When it gets really wet, the ground gets muddy/slimy and starts to stink.

The course/club seems to be a "feeder" for golfers to progress through to the two private clubs in close proximity being Eastwood and Croydon.

This is really my local course, though I try to get on at Croydon or Eastwood whenever I can (both very good tracks). This a fairly typical suburban public course - very short, at 5200m, severe drainage problems, and water supply problems. Nothing really special about this course - greens are always in pretty good nick, though.

Good to brush up on your game, or for a gentle round on a friday afternoon - for a reasonable test of golf, try elsewhere.
