El Caballo Golf Course

Perth, WA | User Rating: Rate-3 (3.0) | Add A Review

The El Caballo Golf Course is an 18 hole public course locacted 60 km from Perth on the Great Eastern Highway, about 25 minutes from Northam.   It is tucked in behind, and shares an entrance with, the El Caballo Resort.

El Caballo is a championship course carved through the picturesque Darling Ranges, and the topography provides plenty of variety. It will test the skills of the low marker and present an interesting challenge for the high handicapper. There are eight lakes, many rock drains or ’burns’, ponds, doglegs and bunkers. The fairways are tree lined and beautiful, but rarely flat. In many cases, if you hit long, you must be quite accurate to avoid running off into a gully or other hazard. Fairway bunkers are also stategically placed to test your accuracy off the tee.

Most of the greens are elevated and require a cautious approach. Bunkers, some very deep, protect them in front and some behind as well. The greens are in great condition all year round. Coring and sanding usually takes place around September, so please check in advance if this bothers you.

The views of the surrounding countryside are spectacular, and there is abundant wildlife – especially waterbirds. Towards sunset, a fair sized mob of kangaroos comes out to play.

Highcuts’ review seems harsh compared to what I saw in June 2013, admittedly my experience iwth different courses is still limited.

El Caballo has an enjoyable layout with lots of undulations and some water, the greens are in good nick and roll very true. They’re faster than the slow public greens I’m used to, but not as fast as Gosnells according to my mate who’s a member and played with me today.
The teeboxes were variable but again you can see they’re putting in a lot of work to the course, concentrating on the greens first.

The owner was apologetic in advance for the state of the fairways, the said give him a couple of years and he’ll have them looking good. The first few were truly terrible, like playing golf in someone’s paddocks, but they got better after the first few holes AND you get preferred lies on fairways so it’s not a major problem. Give it time and they’ll come good.
There’s a new retirement/lifestyle village being built nearby so if that takes off, hopefully they’ll get more regular customer and regular income which will help speed up the pace of redevelopment.

Overall, I wouldn’t drive that far again in a hurry unless I had another discount voucher, but if it was closer I’d happily play there regularly. Maybe with some of those floating golf balls this time!

Here’s a tip – there are signs everywhere saying "Carts must remain on path" so we dutifully did that, which made the round very slow. On the 7th hole the course pro caught up to us and told us it is actually okay to drive on the fairways to your ball. Wish we’d known that to start with!

Set in the hills this course is a long way out, bout an hour from Perth, but nestled in the hills it is a great location. One would hope this course is like Araluen… U would be sadly mistaken when you get there. It’s puss! The tee’s and fairways are are lovely combination of assorted weeds, there is not a blade of grass to be found. You will however find pleanty of rocks and stones to ruin your golf clubs and golf ball. The greens are couch, normal plain old couch, enjoy putting on that shit!

it is also a very short course and doesn’t really through up any challenges. There are no facilities either.

Do not waste your time driving out to this so called golf course, its more of a dog track.

Played this course on tuesday after wanting to play somewhere different then normal and glad we made the drive up. You have to look at a course for what you pay for it and we thought the $44 for the 18 and the cart was a great price, unlike other courses we have played. The greens are in good condition and most my putts went in for 2 or less. The course layout is challenging with bunkers, water and some slim fairways. The fairways are fairly dry and some of the tee boxs need some work but after speaking to the staff the are working hard and rectifying this issue. The only downside to the course are these man made streams, but my friend and I just played it as a man made structure and drop the ball back a foot or two. The proshop isn’t much but if you drive all that way and need to stock up you have your own issue’s. The staff were great and are working hard on the golf course. Defineately play there again as we had a challenging game for both of us.

PROS

  • Quiet, kinda seems you have the course to yourself

Cons

  • The man made streams that are dry

I played this course a few months ago. I too was expecting a hole of a course, but, was pleasantly surprised. Unlike a few others i know the area and knew that playing in the middle of summer was going to be a risk so I waited till it had more rainfall which seemed to make the difference. I also spoke to the new owner who only bought this course Christmas day 2010. Given the time he has owned it I think he’s done a fantastic job. He also told me his dams are finally holding water, so it should remain green throughout future summers as it previously wasn’t watered and maintained. If you want a good course without any waiting then this course is just for you. Not too far away from the metro area and quiet enough to have a relaxing round. All in all I’d suggest everyone at some stage should make the trip and decide for themselves. If not for anything else, but, to give more variety to Perth golfing.

My wife and friends of ours played this course last Saturday. After reading the last couple of comments we went their with trepidation however we were pleasantly surprised. We met the current owner and his wife who are very friendly people. They took over the course in Dec 10 and have really brought as it didn’t play or look anywhere near what the guys who played in Jan experienced. It isn’t Joondalup but there are worst courses we have played in Perth. Some of the tee off areas on the front 9 are a bit gravelly but but not completely bereft of grass and not shocking. You can see as you meander around the course the owners are putting a lot of hard work into bringing this course back. The back nine is very tight and there is a fair bit of water for novices like us to contend with. That said, the countryside views from some of the greens are worth the course fees alone. Keep up the good work, looking forward to playing it again in a cpl of months.

i was also apart of the 8 ball with len dog. after searching the course on iseek i could not wait for sunday to come as i too got sucked in by the false reviews and pictures online that are that out dated along with the course.when you tee off what you think is a good drive which should be somewhere in the middle of the dead fairway as you get closer on arrival your heart sinks when you notice your ball has sunk into the valley of death because once it lands it continues to roll down the big hill. then comes the greens which you would have to be a magician to read as your ball has to travel over several lumps mainly due to wrong grass being used.i must say i definetly did not fall in love with the beauty of the course as everything was dead. this course has now been black listed amongst me and my friends and should also be black listed by you.

After reading the reviews on this page, I was very excited to give it a go as I and my keen golfer mates have played at almost all of the courses in Perth and are constantly looking for beautiful challenging courses.
I booked an 8 ball for Sunday and we made our way up the hill which took almost an hour. As we pulled in the carpark I got a sinking feeling in my stomach. El Caballo appeared derelect. The so-called pro-shop was made up of only tees and three different gloves. An empty pie warmer was all that was on offer for lunch.
I walked outside to notice the putting green had no holes in it. We made our way to the first tee box which bearly had grass growing on gravel. (Not good for the driver). The fairways are like something out of the desert struggling to survive.
The only thing semi-maintaned are the greens which are some weird, spongy grass which is obviously drought resistant – it is almost impossible to read. All the signs are faded from the sun and there is no directional signage – which caused us to play the wrong holes several times. Every 50m on the fairways are man made rock creeks running through them that almost suck your ball in. Grass clippings are scattered everywhere to try and cover up dead patches.
The only thing going for it were the carts – they were new and zippy.
Do yourself a favour, save yourself $60 in fuel, $200 in club repair and the green fee’s and stay the hell away from this so-called raved about course.
Never have I paid for 18 holes and only paid 9. The day was ruined for all 8 players.
I seriously wonder if any of the reviews on this page are legitimate.
P.S How can super golf get a five star rating?
P.PS I had to select a 1 star rating to submit my review when really it doesnt even deserve this.

I’ve played here many times now. It’s very challenging, but lots of fun. It’s very quiet, so there’s rarely a problem to get on. "Love the serenity" as a famous person once said.

Greens are excellent all year round. Most are elevated and protected by bunkers fore and aft – approach with caution. The faiways are beautiful but rarely straight and almost never flat. If you hit long off the tee you can be severely punished if you are not accurate. It’s sad to watch your fantastic drive roll off into a steep gully hazard or head straight for the water.

If you are walking, you’ll need to be fit. The back nine in particular is quite steep.

i have played here twice and loved it each time. I wish it was closer. There was hardly anyone on the course both times but thats only because of where it is. If this course was in metro area and charged the same prices it would be packed. I’ve played nearly every recommended public course in in Perth, including Joondalup, Burswood, Port Kennedy, The Vines, Araluen etc… and this course is right up there. It has a great layout, tree lined fairways, water holes, bunkers. Brilliant course and highly recommend to anyone.

Played the front 9 . Very good course and very challenging. reminds me of a linx course on a computer game. Some holes very hard with deep bunkers. Course in good condition and greens are top notch. Pro shop hardly has any stock and not surprising given the small population around Toodyay.

Green fees only $15 for 9 holes.

This course is a very nice course. the greens here are great. they are quite slow for greens in a Perth summer. But that is a relief after playing on some very quick ones. the scenery awesome and the price is cheap.

The best hole on this golf course is the short downhill par 3 8th.

I highly recommend this golf course.

After making my way through the ubiquitous early morning Perth drizzle, I came upon El Caballo Golf Course. The round starts with a challenging uphill dogleg left and sets the tone for this picturesque layout.

However, don't take your good clubs. If you've got a set of dodgy clubs collecting dust in your garage, take them. Time after time you will find yourself hitting off rocks, and not always when you've ventured off the well groomed fairways. Imagine my disdain at removing a chunk from my nine iron when hitting from dead center of the cut grass. And the boulders aren't always visible, so it's advisable to tap around your ball prior to hitting to get an understanding of how much physiotherapy will be required on your wrist following tapping in at the eighteenth.

All in all, it is a good relaxing course, free of the annoying din of cars driving past tee boxes as is so often the case on numerous courses around Perth. The green fees are rather low for such a well maintained course. Unfortunately, this is offset by having to buy new clubs once the round finished.

It's unfortunate that this golf course is to far away from the metro area ( 50 mins is a long way in perth) that this place can't gain enough revenue to keep the course in good knick, otherwise this is perhaps the most picturesque course in wa with lovely views of the hill and york regions of wa if this was where lake karrinyup was it would be a top 3 wa course, go out and play it and u will fall in love with the beauty of the course.
