Time for an unbiased review…established in 1957 Everglades remains the shortest 18-hole layout within the Gosford-Wyong area. It now measures 5172m Par 68 with seven par 3s ranging from 131-194m, eight par 4s ranging from 284-414m and three par 5s ranging from 422-507m.

Course is claimed to be more sand-based than clay-based with a mixture of mostly kikuyu grass fairways with patches of ryegrass. The teebeds are mostly ryegrass with couch grass teebeds at the 6th & 17th. The mostly small-sized bent grass greens are flat with little break. There are a few medium-sized greens with subtle undulations at 5 &10 with the greens at 13 & 14 being the largest on the course.

I agree that the greens were responsive, probably largely due to the wet 6 months of 2012 where 1000mm of rain has fallen in Gosford, but weren’t quick and cannot agree that they amongst the best greens on the Central Coast. The course conditioning is rather good though.

There is a natural waterbody which crosses the course and generally splits the course into the front and back nine with water coming into general play on several front nine holes: 2, 4-7, 9, 11 & 18. There are only 2 unbunkered holes at 4 & 14 with a total of 37 bunkers on the entire course.

Highlights include: the 345m slight bend right 2nd (index 4) with a yellow-staked pond across the fairway about 35-50m short of the green which is guarded by 2 leftside bunkers; the short 422m Par 5 slight bend left 4th (index 12) with a red-staked water hazard along the left with paper-bark trees on the left rough before the water, with a narrow-necked fairway with ponds left and right from around 100m out from the bunkerless green; the 284m straight 7th (index 14) which requires an iron off the tee to avoid the pond about 185m off the tee across the fairway with 225m required to carry the hazard and there is OOB Veron Road on the left to a green with 3 bunkers; the 142m 12th (index 15) to a small green with 4 bunkers; and the 322m straight 18th (index 9) with the OOB fence right rough and the swamp far right to a green with 3 bunkers.

Overall, the par 3s on the course were probably the course’s best attributes: despite being of similar length, all are well bunkered with small greens to test your accuracy.

The layout is somewhat cramped in style with crossovers and paths around the front and rear of fairways and greens of other holes. For example, I assume due to safety and insurance, the yellow social markers at the opening Par 4 1st hole becomes a 159m Par 3 and shortest par 4 on the course at the 7th hole becomes a 160m Par 3 for social players. Further, at the other end of the golfing spectrum, the course does not have fairway bunkers off the longer holes to challenge the more accomplished golfers.

The par 4s were generally too short and straight with the flags being visible from many tee mounds. The par 5s were quite varied but again too short to challenge the frequent golfers.

The linear start/finish with the 1st and 18th running parallel to each other requires all golfers to start on the 1st tee, as the 9th green is behind the 18th tee about 320m from the proshop. The finish at Everglades is rather disappointing and weak with holes 15-17 all being par 3s with 2 front side bunkers to a small green.

Course access is from Dunban Road between Umina Beach and Woy Woy.

Played here 10th June 2012 off the blue plates with $28 green fees 7 days a week. Friendly club and staff. Whilst Everglades is nowhere near the same league as Kooindah Waters or Magenta Shores, it does offer all golfers some challenges.

Have been driving past this course for the last 12 months and finally had the chance to give it a crack on Monday. I must say I was pretty inpressed with the overall condition after all the rain that had fallen over the last few days. The greens were all perfect. For a course with so many bunkers I managed to only hit one (9th) for which would be the reason for my lowest score this year!!!

PROS

  • Plenty of par 3's for those that love the their short irons

Great testing course that has some pretty holes using the lagoon that runs through the course. Severly shortened holes for social members off the yellow markers. From the back markers much more satisfactory, requiring a lot of calculation and accuracy. Fairways are superb, affording consistently good lies for shots that stay on line. Greens are true and have seen a number rebuilt and rejuvenated improving the complexity of the course. The Pro, Darren Chivas and his staff are friendly and helpful.

I am a junior member at everglades and it is quite good value. All the pro's there are nice and members are great to play with too. Course isn't in GREAT shape but it can get quite well kept.

The current Professional is Darren Chivas, a former NSW Open winner - a great bloke, a calm and efficient teacher and coach (currently the coach of Nikki Garrett, one of the State's best young female prospects).

The course is sand-based and very rarely closed by excess rain (to the envy of many other local courses) It is flat but still challenging with a natural waterway through it's middle and a number of potential out-of-bounds fences to the right for those of us (many) who slice. In fact, a program has recently been implemented to overcome potential OB liability problems by substantial tee screening, mounding on the sides of fairways with up to 2,000 new casuarinas(She-oaks) and melaleucas (paper barks) that are endemic to the area being planted. The 7th hole was altered by shifting the green inwards, away from near the boundary fence, and a water hazard was placed across the middle of the fairway at entry 190 metres - exit 220 metres, to make the hole substantially a lay-up hole Par 4. The big hitters can still have a go but at some risk!

The course is rarely beaten even by the Billy Dunks of the past and Andre Stolz, Darren Chivas etc. of the current Pros.
