I have to be careful not to go overboard with praise after some pretty ordinary, drought struck outback courses, but Gawler was impressive. Played the Sunday comp as a visitor with helpful locals at a dawn start to beat the heat. Fairways good, greens great and soft sand in the bunkers.(Some deep so beware). The greens are apparently very slick later in the day.
Plenty of decisions to make. Some of the greens are hard to hold but the longish grass on the fringes can pull you up quick smart. O O B scares you into the trees on the other side. A good sample of the variety of golf.
The run of par fours is different but they are tough pars for the average hacker. All round some great holes and worthwhile. Eight buggies for hire.
Be prepared for a drive though, the club is actually in Sandy Creek on the way to Williamstown, not in Gawler.
The Relic.

The Gawler golf course is situated approximately 50km north of adelaide and lies at the entrance to the Barossa just out of Sandy Creek. It is an 18 hole course with superbly kept greens and fairways. There are numerous water hazards and sand bunkers to keep every player honest. The front nine contains a great mix of holes with some challenging par4’s and 5’s as well as a picturesque par 3 which it would be hard to argue is not one of the best par 3 holes in the state. Although quite short, the tee off is situated at least 50m above a huge green which is surrounded by bunkers and a slope which falls away rapidly at teh back of the green. Although the hole is not overly difficult it is a pleasure to play. The second par 3 of the front nine is also quite picturesque with a tee shot over the water. Easily reachable with a lofted seven iron, some players have been known to pull out the driver and skim the ball across the lake, which strecthes from tee off to green, and end up on the green.
The back ninebegins with a par 5 and then a par 3 but finishes with 7 straight par 4’s, probably the one disappointing aspect of the course. In my opinion, switching the front and back nine would allow for a much more enjoyable layout.
Pine trees line many of the wide fairways which punishing the stray driver and the rough can be quite sandy.
The course is challenging at times but for those golfers who can hit a long straight ball there are birdies to be had on numerous holes.

Had my first game after a 4 year layoff from the bad game at Gawler.
I found it to be a great challenging course dotted with a few easy holes to get a few freebie birdies.
Greens were wicked quick but run true and give good value when attacking the pin.
Very undulating across the whole track which provided great variation. If i didn’t have to travel 40 minutes to get there i would spend my dollars on a membership for sure.
Pro was very accomodating and the clubhouse staff were great.
Only gripe i had was the price considering the travel to get there but by the end i thought i had received value for money.
Cant wait to play it again in the future.

A very enjoyable course to play. The front 9 is awesome, full of variety and a good test for most clubs in the bag. The greens are something else, they roll superbly, perhaps due to the seemingly low volume of traffic. The kikuyu fairways are good to play full shots from, although they are somewhat difficult to play “touch” shots from. I feel that the main weakness of the course is that it closes with 7 consecutive par 4’s. Although if you played the back 9 first, it would probably be a hard course to fault. Well worth the hour drive north…
PROS
- Absolutely fantastic greens. Fast, true, and fair.
- Bunkering - brilliant
- The par 3's, especially the 7th. All great holes.
- Fairway condition - kikuyu fairways are easy to hit full shots from
- Peace and quiet, it's a very tranquil setting.
Cons
- Kikuyu fairways - difficult to chip and hit half shots from.
- Closes with 7 consecutive par 4's. All different holes, but this is probably the courses only real weakness.

That’s their catch cry, and almost fitting too. Lovely green everything up there, greens are kept well, fairways too. I have heard many good things from others before playing here, and was very excited to see for myself. I will say that it’s very well kept, even in a major drought. Course design is traditional, featuring several longish par 4’s and uphill 5’s. There are two major downhill par 3’s to speak of, the 11th is a real eye catcher my favourite. I wouldn’t say it’s the best, but it would be only personal preferance that seperates this from other top courses locally.

For a public course, this has to be one of the best if not THE best in Adelaide. I have played many courses from public to private and i must admit that this course could go private. The fairways are flawless and they actually have a 2nd cut (not often on public courses). The greens are large, fast and very hard. If i lived a little closer i would become a member imediately! Well worth the travel and $30 (adult) for the round. MUST GO PLAY!!!

We had played Gawler about 5 years ago, but couldn’t remember much about the course, only that we liked it then. We came back this time to check our memory and found it to be a fantastic golf course. The fairways and greens are immaculate, with the greens being quick, but fair. The first cut is also reasonable and after that it can get rough, but thats a long way off line. The course design is great and the holes are all interesting. The front nine has 3 par 3’s, 3 par 4’s and 3 par 5’s and is extremely interesting. The back starts with a par 5, followed by a par 3, then 7 par 4’s for the men (the13th and 15th are par 5’s for the Ladies). Once again the back nine is interesting and a good challenge. The Par is 72 for Men (rated 71) and 74 for Women (rated 73). Green Fees of $35 are excellent value and we would thoroughly recommend you play this course. It is a stunner.
