$55 to play this heap of shit? Tell tem they’re dreaming. It’s decent but there are much better options for a better price than that.

I have played this course twice in the last 2 weeks.
I went back the second time to see if I could justify why this course was ranked in the top 100 public courses in Australia.

My verdict: How this course is ranked within the top 100 I do not know.

The fairways are inconsistent, bare in places and generally very poor.
The greens are in good condition, however you do not get rewarded for good shots. I played a wedge in from 110 metres, landed mid green pin high, bounce 6 foot high and went through the back.

Much work needs to be done to this course, I will not be back. There are many better courses around the ACT area which are fair better value for money

PROS

  • Beer is cold
  • excellent driving range
  • lots of car parking

Cons

  • greens are like tennis courts
  • shop staff are rude
  • fairway lacking consistent grass cover

Measures 6444m Par 72 (black tees) with four par 3s ranging from 138-181m, ten par 4s ranging from 337-408m and four par 5s ranging from 465-537m. Blue plates measure 6227m Par 72.

The previous reviews do not accurately reflect the course conditioning at the moment which was great.

The course has wide couch fairways with flat, lush couch teebeds and quick, smooth bent grass greens. The rough is lush and fairly punishing, though with its wide fairways, you deserve to be punished if wayward. The course has a resort links feel to it with minimal large trees and houses lining most fairways.

The course has 32 bunkers. The 1st, 6th and 17th are the only bunkerless greens on the course.

The back nine is more challenging than the front nine with blind teeshots, more doglegs, fairway crests to hit over and all of the par 4s over 375m!

Highlights include, the 390m 4th (index 1) which plays uphill to a crest with a bunker guarding the green short right, the signature 138m 7th (index 8) with a long green with water along the right and bunker short left, the 408m 10th (index 6) with lateral water hazard from the tee to green which cuts across the fairway 30m from the green which is guarded by water on the right and 2 bunkers back right and short left, the 379m dogleg right 13th (index 2) which is uphill for the last 100m to the large elevated front-sloping green guarded by a bunker short left and the other signature hole 530m 14th (index 13) with its elevated tee to a slight double dogleg fairway with 2 bunkers and a long green guarded by a bunker short right.

Played here 1 April 2011 and paid $34 green fees to walk the course and was finished in 3 hours. So I am not sure what others are talking about but I enjoyed this course and the walk. Great facilities with a large grass driving range and 3 spare holes!

Located about 20 minutes north from Parliament House off the Barton Highway I recommend a round here.

This course is a true disappointment especially given its former stature. While the elements of a good course remain, it falls short in comparison to many other courses in the area which have weathered the drought and other conditions with far more ease and effectiveness.

The routing of the course is quite good with a mix of strong par 3, 4s and 5s with a fair degree of variety in length and orientation. The course makes good use of the natural terain of the land, in particular the back 9. The elevated tee shot on the par 5 14th is a highlight.

I say the routing is good however if not riding in a cart I’m sure many a person would disagree, and understandably so. The walk is long with some distance between the greeens and following tee box on most holes. The course also has a reputation, and one that I can attest to, for torturously slow rounds – 5+ hours in competition.

The conditioning of the course at the moment cannot be considered anything other than poor, especially off the fairways where you are more than likely to draw a bare lie in the middle of various clumps of grass. The fairways themselves are not much better while the course seems completely unable to handle any amount of rain. Many of the fairways are bare and now muddy while several greens struggle to maintain consistent coverage. The greenskeeping staff is also particularly unpleasant and seem to focus more upon accosting their members and guests rather than improving the conditioning of the course.

Gold Creek has a general feel of being run-down. Much of this can be attributed to the tightening of the purse strings of the private owners.

Hopefully the course can be returned to its former glory and not fall to land subdivision for housing estates.

My son (a junior) and I played at Gold Creek last Friday at a cost of $89. I was not the most expensive round of golf I’ve ever played but was definitely the worst value. All the fairway grass was completely dead – a fact that the pro shop apparently didn’t think was worth mentioning when I checked in – so the play varied between rock hard on the dead grass and slushy mush where the water had pooled from recent rain. Overall the place seemed very run down…even the golf cart was falling apart. Having played at Gold Creek a few years ago when it was a lovey course I was very disappointed. Not recommended.

Why did I ever go there. Worst golf course in the country. Its tight, greens are slow and rough, fairways are the worst ive seen, tees are ordinary. The roughs are uncared for and untidy. The staff are rude. While we were chipping on to the green they drove up and started to mow. I wont be back

How sad. I played this course the first time in a few years recently. What has happened to Gold Creek ? It was much better before.

Nice greens and some good holes, especially on the back nine. Condition was average but lack of water would be a problem and they have just changed the grass so its still recovering. Way too many ugly ugly house on the front makes its feel cramped and like a council estate. Back nine felt like a new course with beautiful natural settings and some nice golf holes. would play elsewhere before returning to see if there is a better track in canberra.

Very very tight on the fairway. very very sparse off of it. This is a layout that will suit long ball players to a T. Simply it rewards HEAVY risk from the Tee no if nor buts..flail away with the chief..

Canberra drought as ususal and it is nearly flint hard from the fairway, I have seen the results of the greenkeepers attempt at over sewing the fairways, one hopes that couchgrass will come through and help the hardness around its edges.

as a previous poster said.. be prepared for LONG walks between tees. they are really silly lengths honestly, but thats what you get when you build houses around everything.

the clubs facilities are quite good, thoug I wonder about a pro shop so far away from the club house, an a first tee a par four from the club as well.. what happened there..

I think that the new owners are more concerned about the gymnasium and other club facilities than than the course. A shame really. This was only a few years ago a really good course.

Perhaps the purse strings are tight?

It is a while since I have played this course. Apparently Gold Creek has moved to private ownership and the course is not as good as when it was owned by the the Government. Maybe it is the drought maybe it is lack of money. The fairways were hard with the ball bouncing like it was concrete and the greens were good. Fairly poor given the prices you have to pay here, you would expect everything to be on song. Finding your way around is long, long, long – it would be impossible to walk – and you need a street map to find your way – the layout is all over the place. Everything is expensive especially if you are on your own. A game with a cart on Monday to Friday sets you back a whopping $65!!!!! on Saturady and Sunday it is even worse $75!!!! I can play 3 games of golf elsewhere.

The full course is in use and it has never looked better. Although I have not played RCGC, this must rate as the best course in Canberra. The trees are now well established, greens are fast and tricky.

There are currently three holes closed for construction / renovation - they have substituted in the three practice holes to make up 18. While these are OK, do not expect the layout to be it's best. Without a cart, you will be making several 400m walks between holes to bypass the closed holes.

The course seems to be suffering somewhat with the dry weather. Fairways are still generally very good, greens are good, but the course is a bit dry and rough around the edges.

Typical of many resort courses, Gold Creek G.C. has wide fairways & is not too punishing off the tee. The holes are routed over & around the sweeping undulations of the land. In fact, 5 of the par 4's play over hills with downhill approach shots.

The 13th is a nice par 4, uphill & with a dogleg to the right, playing at 379m from the back. This is followed by a good par 5 from an elevated tee, end at a green that is slightly elevated as well.

The course has enough length, but the green side bunkering is a little weak. There are many holes that have no bunkers near the front of the green & many greens that have no bunkers at all on holes that I believe need them. This weakens the course, because a miss hit shot that comes to rest short, but near the green is not punished. An easy chip & putt, & you have a par.

Worth the visit. I live in SW Sydney & Canberra is only a couple of hours away.

I have been down there quite a few times & find the course to be good value.

This course is a top-line course and much under-rated. The course is always in good condition and is a challenge for golfers at all levels.

Value for money it's the best in canberra. You can always get a game and it's never too crowded.
