The Grange Golf Club, like Port Kembla Golf Club, exists only due to the huge influence of steel on the region. The Grange, formerly known as Australian Iron and Steel Collieries Golf Club, will celebtrate its 40th anniversary next year (2004). It was formed after BHP made available land it owned near Kembla Grange racecourse. Golfers from the local collieries and social golf clubs formed the basis of the foundation membership, while other members were canvassed among the steelworks personnel.
Course designer Arthur East, who was the head professional at Sydney’s Lakes Golf Club for nearly 16 years during the ‘30s and ‘40s, assessed that the land was for a good golf course. East oversaw the design and initial construction of the course, which opened for play in 1964. Eight years later, design veteran Al Howard was commissioned to revamp a small selection of holes.
The course that stands today is slightly longer -6,270 metres from the blue championship markers – and offers a terrific experience. It is a course of two contrasting nines. The outward half is flat and easy walking, with the pick being the two par-3s – the 174 metre 4th and 154 metre 7th.
While The Grange’s longest hole requires straight hitting, so does its shortest. The 146 metre par-3 18th is the club’s signature hole – and for good reason. Standing on the tee there is only one thing between you the front edge the green – the cool, flowing waters of Mullet Creek. There is a short fairway to the left of the water and in front of putting surface, which is heavily bunkered. This hole is easily affected by wind and anything from a 3-iron to a wedge could be used to find the small undulating green."

A course of contrasting front & back 9’s. The front being relative flat, & well maintained. The back 9 is a lot tougher for the visitor, with several par 5’s requiring serious thought off the tee, Mullett Creek winds it’s way through the undulating back 9.

Front nine, short, flat and reasonably boring. Back nine, undulating, testing greens – great!
Front nine requires you to just keep it on the fairway and you will score well. Back nine is entirely different (except the par 3 10th). You almost feel like your on a different course. Undulating fairways, testing par 4s and the par 5s make you think before you grab the driver off the tee.
Will be back for more. Friendly staff, easy to get on and good value. Tip – keep your ball below the hole on the par 5 16th green. I was putting for birdie from the top of the green and the result wasn’t pretty.

Measured 6270m Par 72 (from the back plates) with four Par 3s ranging from 145-175m, 10 Par 4s ranging from 330-400m and 4 Par 5s ranging from 440-530m. The greens were cored so they were very slow. The front nine greens were substantially smaller and flatter than the back nine greens, but the back nine also had more greens with tiers and dips. Bunkers protect the greens of most holes, but no fairway bunkers on the longer holes. The teebeds were a little disappointing with some not very flat lies, while the fairways were trimmed close and was quite lush in places.
The course has two nines that are similar in length, but differ in challenge and quality quite markedly. The front nine begins with a par 5 dogleg right, and has 2 interesting par 3s worthy of mention. The 174m 4th has Mullet Creek along the left with large bunker on the right. While the 154m 7th has an elevate tee on an island to a green with a leftside bunker. The rest of the holes are fairly flat and boring.
The back nine is the reason why Iíll come back here. Holes are more demanding, options off the tee, lay-up options on par 5s, larger tiered greens and undulating fairways, interesting sand traps, creeks and OOB cut close to fairways and some greens just add to the challenge. The signature 146m 18th is a hole that tests your club selection with the cooling waters of Mullet Creek between you and the green. Par 5s are worth respect, but keep it on the high side, and you are in business. Par 4s are quite challenging on length, but are within reign if accurate off the tee. Generally there were narrower fairways on the back nine compared to front nine, which adds to the course flair.
Played here 23/4/06 with good value for green fees $25 and $30 for a cart. Great little clubhouse with extremely friendly members, proshop and bar staff. Our club has reciprocal rights so we played here for free, but it is definitely a course/club I recommend if in the Illawarra/Wollongong region. Good facilities include function room, driving bays, chipping green and short range for mid to low irons.

A very nice course where a bit of thought needs to go into yourshotmaking especially on the back 9 where on some holes laying up is the smarter option rather than blazing away with a wood, There is enough trees, water, bunkers & thick rough to keep anyone honest.

Interesting course, although a little flat & boring on the front nine. It use to have a great set of par 3's, but the 4th was shortened & wrecked. The 18th is a good closing par 3, if you like that sort of thing.
The 11th is a good par 4 doglegging left around a creek. The 12th is similar, but shorter. Both good holes.

I haven’t played here in about 2 years but used to be a member. The front nine can be bland and unimaginative till the wind gets up! It bears teeth then. The back nine can match anywhere. Since the new pro arrived 6 or 7 years ago the course has stepped up a notch, especially in the little details and the management of tee times. You don’t wait too much. Nice job Snapper!
