First round at HMBCGC, all i can say, is what an excellent course, a few tricky holes and some helpful hints from the friendly locals certainly helped. Greens were in good condition as were the fairways.
I enjoyed playing this course and will be playing again soon, having a better understanding of the course now and hopefully it will help to go lower. Friendly staff at the proshop. a pleasure to play

A really wonderful course. Price-performance ratio is excellent. The course is well maintained with a lot of water and a beautiful environment. A nice pro-shop with very friendly staff.

We would not recommend this course as there are too many holes where you have no idea where to go. The 5th is a very badly designed golf hole, a blind tee shot, then a green tucked away, surrounded by OOB. If you play safe and end up about 120-130 metres out you still can’t see the green or the OOB, so you have no idea what has happened to your ball.

Overall the course is quite short for Men, Par 70 but rating 67. For Ladies most of the holes use the same tee blocks, so a little longer with Par 71 and rating 69. The course also seems to be laid out improperly, there are a number of holes where you have to walk past other holes to get to the next tee.

Green fees were $25 (reduced from $35 as the greens had just been cored). The fairways were not in great condition and the tee blocks were dry, hard and uneven. A few up and down places, but it is a reasonable course to walk, so a cart is not required if you are of average fitness.

Overall we would suggest that Cairns GC is a much better course for similar money and, if you don’t mind the cost so is Paradise Palms. We certainly wouldn’t go back here again.

A wonderful challenging day. The scenery alone around the course is worth a day out.

Local knowledge is a big advantage for some tricky holes. The Club just needs to have access to some sort of guidance for those holes that can’t be assessed from the tee. Maybe a card diagram with detail, plan diagrams of the holes at the tee with distances to hazards. Distance markers are lacking. GPS information would be good.
Tha actual condition was good but we played Cairns GC znd it was a bit better. The interesting holes at Half Moon Bay still make this a course to play when in the area and reasonable value.

The entire course was under repair not worth the money paid to play…

Our 3rd time at Half Moon Bay, the golf is getting better each time. Only lost 1 golf ball this time. Most enjoyable.

Every course should finish with a hole that feels so good that you want to return and Half Moons 236 metre par 4 delivers. My tee shot 5 wood left me at greenside rough. As for the course the differences of feel make it. You start in general’surburbia’ course layout, then a rainforest type feel within the canopies of the foliage and creek to a seaside course encased with mangroves to also having views of the mountains and surrounding ranges. Very enjoyable but I would recommend playing twice. Many holes would play differently once known. Highly recommend if in the Cairns area. Played first 3 holes with locals and they were very welcoming and helpful.Iseek tee booking saved me almost $30 and was easy even without the computer. Booked by phone as laptop played up.Course was so inviting that even a few of my Titleists decided to stay. :)

Wonderful and challenging course. If anyone comes across about a dozen lost golf balls, pls advise. Very Picturesque.
Well done Half Moon Bay Golf Club. Hope to become a member in the near future.

Played two days ago after ringing round all the local courses (was on holiday in Port Douglas) to find most courses wanted $130 plus $55 for club hire, etc. Surprised to find Half Moon was only $35 plus $18 for fairly decent clubs and trolley.
They had a big corporate event starting at midday so i was the last on at 8am. Very impressed. They had pulled out all the stops for their event. Joined a couple on the 9th for the rest of the round as i was on my own and they said it was in the best condition they had seen.
Lots of interesting holes, none the same as the last. Decent mix of par’s, great quality greens, bunkers and fairways. Everything was immaculate.
Highly recommend this course, doubly given the price difference over its neighbours.

Played here recently and was challenged on all holes. Whether it’s bunkers, water or cleverly designed fairways, you’ve got to be on your game to master this course. The fairways were in mint condition, greens were consistent but the tees were very sandy and in poor condition. This is just course maintenance and will be back to normal shortly. The 236m par 4 18th is a good finishing hole with an opportunity to take on the dogleg and putt for eagle! $26.50 green fees via iseekgolf booking online was good value also. The course has some really pretty pockets and different characteristics and I would recommend a round at Half Moon Bay if you’re in the far north.

Very nice course and excellent value at $30, plus another $30 for a hirecart, with an esky to keep the waterbottle cool. Nice open course, with a few tricky holes as per other reviews. The 5th with the mangroves surrounding the greens was difficult and swallowed one of my balls, and a local later told me that their trick was to lay up and roll the ball into the gap between the mangroves on the approach. On the back nine, the hard right dogleg almost took another, and the same friendly local warned to lay up again. I’d take their advice. A friendly bar for a beer afterwards, which along with the cart was well needed on a very warm morning.

Would recommend not playing here as there are far better courses around. The course was in poor condition despite major competition – poor tees, greens etc including an unmarked temporary green. Poorly layed out with some dangerous crossings and poor directions.
The picture showing the sea above is not representative of the course ? which hole is that???? there are some nice views of the rainforest. People are very friendly and the clubhouse is warm and the proshop is good.
In summary tight rammed in course, not worth it!

played this morning with the wife and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves..
Narrow fairways and some tiny greens made it quite challenging.
Greens were only fair and they are working on improving. There was 1 temporary green. Good value for money course. And one other thing, the photo above doesn’t apply anymore as the vegetation is so thick and high
there is no sea view from the green.

Great value for money and a good layout…ocean holes are nice…the course is quite short and the 9th par four is only 220m of the tee…we played with a couple that were very nice and comp fee was only $19 for a visitormust play if you are in the area

I played the course and was pleasntly surprised. It is a very well conditioned course with very helpful staff. The fairways are great. It is not overly long, but it is definitely challenging, it is a course that you would definitely play much better if you have played multiple times as there are some blind shots.

It has water, sand, and some rough. I would definitely play again as value for money is definitely there.

The course was well looked after in our (my husband and I) opinion. The only negative would be that some of the tee-off areas were a bit wonky (unlevel) which was a test of my still-learning abilities! There are some beaut holes, the 14th is a standout from an aesthetic or just a ‘let’s take a break and admire the view’ perspective. The staff are friendly, and there is appears to be a regular amount of maintenance staff going on around the course which is comforting. The $25, 18 hole special (tee-off before 9am on weekdays) through iseekgolf.com is a winner. We’ll definitely be going back – several times I imagine as it’s a great course to practice and improve one’s accuracy.

Recently played this course while away on holidays and must say that we were pleasantly surprised. While this might not be challenging enough for the scratch players, it offers enough challenge for the rest of us. Anyway the picturesque scenery & enjoyment made playing for us a great experience.

Don't expect a lot from this little 18-holer. Some terrific newer holes are offset by the sheer ordinariness and shortness of the older ones. A long wet season has the greens in bad nick right now but this is great wedge and 9-iron practice. Small greens call for crisp short irons. This would be an ideal easy starter for a week of golf in FNQ. The locals are very friendly - ask to play in the Blues Club on Monday or Thursday afternoons.

I was persuaded by reading a 4 star critique plus the $30 fee. However it was worse than some municipal courses in Melbourne.

Safety is also an issue given the tightness of the layout and I would not be surprised if a number of golfers have not been hit.The greens were in very poor condition;the Marshal said there had been a lack of water but other courses did not seem to have the same problem.Getting caught behind 4 players who looked as though they were very inexperienced playing Ambrose and taking 5 hours did not help.It was certainly by far the worst of the 4 courses I played in the area;a disappointing experience.

Measures 5145m Par 70 from the back plates, where I always play a course from with 5 Par 3s ranging from 125-165m, 10 Par 4s ranging from 235-415m and three Par 5s ranging from 445-485m. Course is well maintained and provides any golfer with a challenge on the back nine, but some may find the front nine asks too little.

Best holes are all on the back nine, I feel, and the index on the card backs me up too. The 415m Par 4 12th (index 1) has creek along right of fairway and its length is quite difficult to hit green in reg. Holes 13-15 provide OOB on the right with water on leftside with slight doglegs - worthy of par.

Played here 25/7/06 and paid $30 green fees. Not too bad course but the front nine is significantly shorter (and easier) than the back nine. Could do a little more on some holes, but with confined land area, not too bad, and better than Gordonvale GC.

Thank you Yorkeys Knob! As a 20odd handicapper, a 36 on the front is my best ever nine hole score. Won't talk about the back. If you go for accuracy, even the water, water everywhere isn't that much of a problem but the temptation to go for the short par fours can bring you unstuck.

Interesting "hazards" on the front(especially for this coal miner) are the gas drainage pipes, complete with no smoking signs, for five or six holes. The neat little par four 5th over the hill and nestled in the mangroves is best played quickly before the bugs attack. Thank you birdie. The 6th is the steepest left to right fairway I've seen, with a brick wall at the bottom to stop the need for more bug repellent in the mangroves. Overall it is a fine course with plenty of grass, good greens and the people at the clubhouse couldn't have been friendlier.

Hire carts available with coolers!

Slight error in my report below. The 18th is a dog leg right.

What an excellent course, I will cetainly be back to play this one again. It's not long at 5145m for men but a good test. I don't know it's history but it appears as though there are older style holes and others with modern design elements and feel.

Quite a few deceptive holes that demand correct club selection for Postion, Position, Position; it's unlikely just blazing be rewarded. All holes were fun except for the 6th hole, it didn't do much for me. The 5th is amazing, no more than a 5 or 3 wood as parts of the fairway runs in to OOB! The green is also surrounded by swamp and trees, all deemed OOB. All fairways were in very good condition. The 18th is a blast at only 236m dog leg left. Great for an ego boost, set-up with a driver shape left to right and you will be on or very close.
