Wow! how a bush fire can change things! this course is a polar opposite to its former self 4 years ago – once a tree-lined tight course now a open stategic test in the wind (ala Ranfurlie).

Despite its change it is a delight to play and with the wide open space has become more of a strategic course. This unfortunately does show its flatness in terms of hills but the course still has the same wonderful layout.

Definately worth the drive – trust me on this for $35 on this course – $40 mexican @ the local resturant and o/night in the Mecure you have a nice getaway from Melbourne – trust me on that!

One of the Best country courses I have ever played in Australia. PLayed the Horsham Open Amateur and the course was in supreme condition. The greens were pure and fast considering it was winter. fairways were still firm. Challenge occurs when everyshot isnt hit on the fairway or green. Either DEAD or a very difficult shot. Loved the course. Getting to see Kangaroos every now and then made it fun.

PROS

  • Fairways Pure
  • Greens are pure

Cons

  • Only one Distance marker. the 150m.

PLayed her last week and was not disapointed. 35 bucks and as neat a course as you will play. good range of holes and fairways to match the melbourne sandbelt. nice native vegetation and scenery. Very laid back club . Would be great place to be a member. in my all time top ten.

The course was in excellent condition with fairways and greens in superb shape. The course was voted 52 in Aust Golf Digest March 2004 edition and is one of the best inland courses in Australia. The course is situated south west of town about 5 km from the centre on undulating sandy soil perfect for golf courses. When you walk from the carpark to the clubhouse the impact of the course hits you.The two distinct features at Horsham are the greenside bunkering which rivals some Melbourne sandbelt courses and the private nature of the holes. The holes are very secluded from one another which adds to its charm.I havent played it for 15 years and can't remember much of the past ,but bunkering has been added to many of the holes. The 1st a 302m par4 and the short par 5 14th are such examples. The 2nd is a superb par 3 167m to a raised green with bunkers protecting each side. The 12th is a tough par4 of 364m which goes to the right and has a big fairway trap on the right .The approach is to an elevated greeen with a bunker on the right. The 8th and 18th are long par 4s,the 8th particularly difficult as the last 280m is uphill to the left and plays into a south easterly. If there is a criticism of the course then holes 5 to 8 could do with fairway bunkering as they are all par 4s and there is not much strategy off the tee.Its ranking would be even higher if it was also a touch longer as it plays at around 5900m.The 16th is an example of the excellent bunch of short par 4s at Horsham. At 290m it plays to an open fairway initially then narrows around 80m to a two level green.A beautiful hole.Overall a great golfing experience.

I played this course over two days on March 13 and 14, 2004 during their Autumn tournament. This is a fine course, worth travelling to from Melbourne, or stopping to play on your way to or from Adelaide.

The sandy land on which it sits is as good as any of Melbourne's sandbelt courses, and while the course itself is not of the calibre of Royal Melbourne or Kingston Heath, there are quite a sandbelt few courses it would exceed.

The course condition has recovered well from the water restrictions of 2002/2003, and apart from a few patches still recovering, the couch on the fairways was generally excellent. The greens were in good condition and putted truly, and the bunkering was terrific... very Mackenzie-esque in look and well maintained.

I didn't find a particularly weak hole, although the short 9th and the 16th, and the par-5 3rd, could be relatively easy par opportunities with a straight tee shot of any reasonable length. The par-3s were all tough, especially the 11th which is nearly 200m from the back. The other two par-5s were challenging, with the 14th offering a fine perspective from the tee now they've added new bunkers right of the green at the top of the hill. The 8th and the 18th are both long, tough par-4s over 400m long, requiring the skill of a straight long-iron into narrow greens surrounded by deep bunkers.

The clubhouse and pro-shop were very hospitable, with a fine outlook over three greens and three tees.

All-in-all a great golfing experience, on a well-kept course in fine condition. If this course was in Melbourne, it would be greatly in demand.

The headline may be a little deceiving, Horsham Golf Course is a fantastic course with a variety of good holes and a hell of a lot of timber surrounding narrow-ish fairways. The problem was the greens had just been cored and were sandy and unpredictable. Forgetting that, the course was excellent. The first is a short par 4 that calls for pin point accuracy off the tee to lay up at the dog leg corner before hitting to an elevated green surrounded by bunkers and severely sloping away at the back. An easy enough hole so long as you hit two accurate shots and then don't 3 putt! The 2nd is the toughest par 3 on the course, only 158 meters but all of it up hill with dense scrub surrounding the green left and right and thick rough behind. There are a selection of good short par 4's and some long ones as well, the 18th in particular takes two good shots to reach. Accuracy is a premium at Horsham, players who drive it straighter rather than longer will score better. The bunkers take some getting used to, they are consistent but the sand seems to be very shallow and hard to control distance from.

We played an our after torrential rain had lashed the course and there wasn't a puddle to be seen, the course must have excellent drainage.

The staff were ultra friendly and helpful, the beer was cold and the pies were hot, the clubhouse was very inviting. All in all it's worth a trip to Horsham to play...I just wish they'd core the greens when someone else has a weekend off!
