Brute force is hardly necessary at Jamberoo….it’s mostly a thinkers track.
Played in comp March 2010. Nice short course with creek crossings on several par fours at around driver length for average (180-200m) players…..those brave souls going for it must NAIL it to get across! Teeing off on the par 5 12th requires a hefty fade around a large overhanging tree for right handers if the fairway is to be found.
Toughest holes would be the long par4 14th and long par3 15th with OOB right on both.
A tip from this humble 16 marker…leave the driver at home, most par4’s are around 300m, the few holes where it may be useful have OOB right!

PROS

  • Nice condition, most holes easily reachable for the average player, easy walk.

Cons

  • Flies and heat in summer, constricting for the big hitters.

I’ve played here on a number of occasions as a youngster and as a mate of Martin Frances, a former trainee pro here, and I understand that not much has changed there since the early 1990’s.

This course is not long by any standard, however there is water hazards strategically positioned at landing distances from the tees on the par 4’s and par 5’s, at around 200-230m from the tees. The greens were also quite small the last time I played there and with very few bunkers. I have memories of the small greens and not to mention the flies during summer :). Least if I go back there, I’ll be old enough now for a beer at the old Jamberoo pub after the game.

The hole I’ll always remember here is a par 5 in the back corner of the course. It is a dogleg right with OB all the way down the right side. The green is up on a hill on the north-western boundary, with a water hazard just short of the green. For me this was the signature hole and stays engraved in my mind forever. With its short length, you must play better than your handicap in comp at Jamberoo to match the rating which most often than not is always less than its par. A very green and picturesque course, with great value for money for a short course but not as difficult as some tracks in the area.

PROS

  • Very affordable and a good test of course mamagement for better players

Cons

  • Not that long but you must think your way round this one, a little like Wollongong/Kiama

Played here in January. Tight course promoting good course management with creeks and dams in landing zones. Big carry on the 1st from the back markers for a short iron to the green! Quiet a short course, however, being a long hitter not necessarily a benefit on a few of the par fours. Course needs a lot more bunkers, particularly around greens. There is water in play on about fourteen holes, but more bunkering would up the ante on course management. Flies everywhere due to cow paddocks surrounding course, play outside summer if possible.

Measures 4842m Par 67 when I played here 11/8/06 with 6 Par 3s ranging from 110-200m, 11 Par 4s ranging from 235-395m and the 460m dogleg right Par 5 12th with large tree near the tee to take out the cut-the-corner shot, fairway bunker 260m from T on left and the cooling natural rapids of Minnamurra River on the right OOB.

Quite correct to say this course reminds me of Kiama, and all holes (except the 3rd, 9th & 15th) have water in regular play. I found this course a great thinkers course for my first visit.

The course is littered with numerous agricultural drains, small dams and natural creeks. Best holes are the 385m Par 4 1st (index 2) with creek clearance from T around 230m and the 366m Par 4 18th (index 1) with creek clearance from T around 235m with bunker guarding short rightside green and a small drain about 30m from the green cutting across the fairway.

I also liked the inward nine better than the front. In fact the closing 4 holes are a great challenge. The 311m Par 4 16th has an elevated small figure 9-shaped green thats guarded by good sized dam. Followed by the only elevated T on the course 323m Par 4 17th withmore drains cutting very close to the bunkerless green.

Only criticisms I have is that more bunkers should be placed around this course's greens. The only greenside bunkers on the course were on the 3rd, 15th (best par 3 on the course) & 18th. It could help aid drainage on the course too, as some fairways were quite sloshy under foot. But located on a natural floodplain, you expect this.

Only paid $16 weekday green fees and comp fees are just $9. Has to be the cheapest, quality short course in the Illawarra, along with Kiama GC.

The first credit should be made to all the wonderful green keepers and pioneering volunteers who devoted their time to make this little gem of a course.

Over the past 15 years I have seen this course develop from an open paddock to a wonderful and tactical golf course full of water hazards, deep rough & quality fairways.

Although the course is quite short in length it offers you the challenge to drive the tree hugging creeks or lay up short and have a longer second to the green. The greens offer a good variety in speed and undulating breaks which are very true but are often too easy to hit due to the lack of bunkers which is disappointment for the quality player.

Over all a top little course thatâÄôs very well priced and full of wonderful local people. I just love coming back to this course every year to challenge my course record of 3 under par.

Jamberoo is one of the major inprovers in the illawarra. Backing onto the minnamurra river, Jamberoo features a variety of holes to provide a great game of golf. Jamberoos greens are impeckable and can range from really slow to really fast. Jamberoo provides a great experience for the experienced club golfer!!

If your looking for an enjoyable and affordable round Jamberoo would have to be close to one of the best on the south coast. Still offers some of the cheapest green fees I have seen and the course gives up plenty of birdie opportunities yet at the same time can cost you severely with some tricky out of bounds and clever hazard placement. Great course to play any time of the day with a group of mates and a nice cold drink at the bowling club afterwards to finish never goes astray.

Jamberoo Golf Course is a great course set in lush surroundings, backing on to the Minnamurra River. The course is flat and relatively easy to play. The greens can be slow at times, but they are green year round. Plenty of wildlife roams the course including goannas, ducks and rabbits. There is a water hazard on almost every hole and plenty of well positioned bunkers close to the greens. A very well maintained course that is always improving. Good value for money. A flat, well maintained short course with some unexpected challenges. If you can drive well over 230m on the full, then this course is not for you. Several fairways are crossed by creeks. Quite often these are placed strategically at driver landing distance, requiring a think about what strategy to use. Several of the fairways are tree lined, with kikuyu rough. A good course for beginners to learn how to think their way around a golf course. Grass greens are usually a bit slower than others in the Illawarra region.
