Played here on the weekend – 18/12/11 on the coupon deal. $50 for two and a cart. Great course in good condition. Long fairways allowing the driver out on every par 4/5 except the first. Was raining a little, which slowed some of the greens down and they probably need a good roll. Lots of bobbling when putting, but then again I am crap at putting. Well worth the drive.

Played here today, Fairways and greens are OK, but the bunkers are rubbish – like concrete, very hard to even get behind/under the ball.
You don’t have to go far off faiways to lose balls however, rough is quite demanding after all the rain we have had recently.

played here a month ago after the rain and then played again on the weekend 28-8-11 after a week of sunny days. big difference. the course had dried out with no sign of the boggy course i played on the month before.
challenging course for the intermediate golfer, long fairways, tree lined holes, challenging bunkers.
fairly cheap to play, new golf carts.

PROS

  • good course
  • cheap
  • challenging

Cons

  • can pack groups of people too close

Played it for the first time last week. What a disapointment! A waste of money in its current condition. This course should be closed over winter or after any significant rain. Its simply not fun or fair to play from plugged lies and lying water in the middle of fairways. Avoid during winter months and head down the peninsula.

Played there last Friday (19/2/2010) A number of the fairways on the front 9 were bare in a lot of places as I believe they are in the process of regrowing the fairways with another grass. There was a sign on the 7th to tea up on the 7th and 8th fairways to protect newly grown grass. I hadn’t checked with the pro shop before we hit off but some of the holes needed at least prefered lies, if not tee up on all the dead pan fairways. (Very poor condition)

The back 9 was better but there were sprinkler areas in the middle of the fairway where it looked like the ground had flooded or a pipe had broken, as they had protective bars in front of the areas.

Greens were good with a good layer of grass and probably a bit slower than I’ve known them to be. Unfortunately they still suffer from lazy golfers who don’t fill their divits or pitch marks, but the greens weren’t as bad for pitch marks this time around.

Played here on saturday the 6th feburary.
The fairways were in terrible condition ,lacking grass in too many places.
Nothing worse than sending one up the middle and your second shot is still played from a poor lie (dirt or mud)
For the price i would go to Dorset or Ringwood every time over this course.(and that is saying something)
It had the feel that at some time in the past it was a good track but that is just the point, it was in the past.
I must say the greens were ok and so were the tee squares it was just everthing in between.
I won,t be hurrying back.

I played the course this week and scored my personal best for 18 holes (89, usually average 100) so I was pretty happy with it. I am a member at Anglesea and grew up at Seymour which means I’m well used to a lack of grass, but Amstel was a very pleasant antithesis, having an almost uniformly lush fairway surface which doesn’t punish trying to get your clubhead under the ball. As a slightly inland course it was also fairly flat compared to what I am used to at Anglesea, with not much more than gentle slopes on any hole.

My round with two other blokes started on the 10th, as everyone’s did on that Wednesday. The 7th and 8th fairways are being relaid but otherwise the course is in decent nick. I found the lack of hole maps on either the card or the course signs to be a little offputting, particularly for the handful of holes where you couldn’t see over hillocks. There wasn’t a group behind us but I can see what other commenters mean about the lack of protection from balls hit from behind to the next tee, with the 1st being a prime example.

As a public course you expect a bit of disrespect paid to it by players, and sure enough the otherwise verdant fairways are ruined every now and again by the ugly yellowed stain of an unfilled divot. The bunkers had some lovely soft sand on the edges but for some reason the centre of every bunker was raked with some black material which more resembled mud than sand. There had been some recent rain which made me wonder if this was the reason, but it was mystifying why this black stuff made you want to avoid the centre of a bunker and stick to the edges. The greens were perhaps the easiest part of this course, with not much in the way of borrow on any of them from my experience. You can usually rely on a steady line without trickiness or double movements.

I managed the four par 3s in even par, which underlines their easiness with indexes of 12, 18, 15 and 17 – the large size of the greens despite extensive bunkering should see a decent tee shot safely on. In fact, the top 8 in indexes are all par 4s, indicating that the challenge on this course comes from hole design rather than length. A few fairway bunkers dotted here and there should be noted, though they are all easy to see from tees.

The 19th hole is very spacious, including a large verandah which is the best place to relax with one of the usual tap beers after an enjoyable day’s golf. $22 for a Wednesday hit was perhaps the biggest strength, although for those of us who don’t live in the eastern suburbs it’s a bit of a trek. I may not return but I was happy with the course all the same, and wouldn’t be disappointed if a course like this was my local.

At Amstel you will always get your money worth. Never seen this course too dry and you will always be playing off green grass. Personal favourites are 3, 5, 9, 12, 17, 18. Overall very nice course with the clubrooms after a very nice place for a few brewski’s

Haven’t played these courses and still really want to, just wouldn’t suggest taking along any of my golf buddies that walk the course chain-smoking… Could be dangerous with the stink in the air http://www.theage.com.au/national/explosive-methane-scare-could-hit-thousands-20080911-4eaf.html?page=-1

I played the park course and Ranfurlie on the same day.(early start) My comments are:- which one is supposed to be the public course. Amstel Park layout was interesting and challenging, short and long dog legs and water carry on par 3’s. greens were slow but true and too soft, which made heal marks.you have to hit it straight or you are in the trees. Ranfurlie was long and boring, every hole is straight, no dog legs, good bunkers in fairways. greens were appaulingly bad condition for a top rated course. The course looked unkept and unloved with long grass around bunkers not what you expect from a members course. After our game, at park course we could have a meal and a drink, whereas at Ranfulie, with its grandeur of club house, we could just get a drink, we couldnt even get a sausage roll, and the atmoshere was dead. The sign on the gate said Ranfurlie was rated in top 50, sorry not for me there are 100 others ahead. Too difficult from ladys tee. Overall the park course at $19 mid week is great value, and a very good golf course to enjoy.

The the down side of park course is blind tee shot holes on 4, 6, 8,16. this need to be addressed before someone is hurt. In future we wil play at park course more often.

Have played this course a few times. On the most recent visit last week there was a course marshall, although previously it has been quite slow as others have mentioned. There are a few intersting holes though and I will be back.

PROS

  • Quite a nice layout
  • Like the clubrooms / bar (except the pokis)

Cons

  • Bunkers in poor condition

The course is in above average condition for a public course in these drought conditions. Fairways are reasonably lush with only minor patches of bareness and the greens are true-rolling. Layout is relatively straightforward and there aren’t really any memorable holes.

My one big gripe….they must hire a Course Marshall. Our round took 5.25 hours to complete which is unacceptable, even on the busiest days. One group was holding everyone up and making everyone else’s day a nightmare. Something should have been done.

good course all up, not long but challanging enough with bunkers on most holes and the tightness on fairways. greens are real nice to putt on and a good lay out. first played here in feb 07 after a real dry spell and the fairways were dry and patchy. would giv it 4 stars no problems but played it again in dec 07 and after rain it was only a little more greener, seen better fairways on worse courses.

Amstel golf club has a championship golf course (Ranfurlie) in addition to to the public Park Course. The Park layout is still preferred by some members, despite the potential for delays caused by non handicap players. This is largely due to it being less subject to the local strong breezes and because, by some, is perceived to be an easier and more interesting lay-out. The park course is in surprisingly good condition despite the use it is subjected to and is a credit to the management of the facility. The course is serviced by a highly professional pro shop who ensure everyone gets a genuine warm welcome.

I have played this course a number of times and found it to be very enjoyable. The greens are in reasonible nick and the fairways are quite nice. I agree with the safety concerns on some of the holes. One time I was leaning on my club standing about 5 metres back from a friend who was teeing off on the 6th hole when a ball hit my club on the full. Not impressed. No fore called or anything Bad etiquette is not the clubs fault, no fence is! I have noticed that because the course is slightly overbooked a lot of players are impatient and tend to hit their drives before you are out of range. (I do hope management reads this at some point and takes notes)

Anyway, love the course apart from that, the par 3's are all unique, one has a very nice water carry if the tee is in the right spot. The opening hole is a good example of how the rest of the course plays, wanting more accuracy than distance. A lovely course that runs a special on saturday mornings, $24 for 18 holes is a good bargin for this course if your happy to be delayed on a few holes. One time a staff member even drove up to us on the 9th hole and gave us drink cards for the delays.

All the greens in my opinion are quite good, like any green on this planet there are still divots not fixed by previous players but again, not so much the clubs fault. I try to fix at least 5 divots that are not mine on any course (something i would encourage of all players to help maintain good greens around melbourne). Most of the bunkers are pretty good but a couple of them need some more sand. the fairways are quite good as well and only a few patchy spots, keep in mind when playing this course that its not royal melbourne, they have hundreds of players through everyday, can't expect the grass to be perfect (again, many players will not fix their divots, a little sand goes a long way). The fairways are still much better than most places of the same price.

I thoroughly enjoyed this course on previous occasions and will again in the future, many, many times.

As per the review in April 2005, the course does not appear to have changed much condition wise over the last 10 months or so. Fairways are still patchy on all holes in some places.

Fair comment about the safety issues - really it needs improving - even a few mesh fences would help, especially at holes 2, 3, 6. Also as many of the holes back onto each other there's a fair likelihood you'll get someone driving onto your hole as well.

The initial run of holes, if the course is loaded up with groups on weekends, takes until the 4th hole to get a clear run. We waited for three groups on the 3rd before we could hit...

Greens also were a bit lumpy, but were receptive to a well hit iron at least.

Bunkers could do with some actual sand in them. Granted it had rained a little but they were all hard pan and not good enough for a course of this cost.

Having winged a bit above, I do like the par 3s on this course - all quite challenging. Some good par 5s as well. Nice tall gums and pines and quite a few cockatoos around the back nine particularly.

Enjoyed the course overall, although I felt it should have been in better condition for the money asked. Good deal Wed/Thu presently - pay 9 play 18 for $20. Otherwise its $32 on weekends.

Played the course yesterday for the first time. General Layout of the course was good, except for three suicidal holes. There are two holes with humps in the fairway which make it dangerous when teeing off as you can not see the group if they are about 200m in front of you. Also there is a Par 3 green which is right behind the tee-off to the next hole...very dangerous. Conditions of the fairways are a bit patchy...rough in some areas. Greens are inconsistent...some are fast, watch-out for those downhill putts. Probably a bit on the expensive side for $32.00 green fee. Nice 19th hole.

Played it for the first time cup weekend. We had a lot of rain previously which I assumed was the reason for the light rough being very long (and we kept losing balls) and the bunkers being hard. Interesting course that relies more on precision than big hitting and the more you play there the easier it would play. Clubhouse is excellent with TAB, pokies, good menu and well priced beers. Under 30 bucks which is great value for this type of course and only a further 30 minutes from the sandbelt area of Melbourne. I hope next time the sand is back in bunkers though as it made getting out of them easy but a fluke if you stopped it.

Play here on a regular basis. Is a lovely course that is not to easy and not to hard. Plenty of bunkers and a few holes that are played over water depending on where the tees are placed on the day. I would have to say it is one of the most enjoyable courses I have played on. 8/10
