Splendid course … Even after a truckload of rain on boxing day the course was in great order, especially the greens. The bunkers had a bit of water in them but that is to be expected with the amount of rain around in the hunter overxmas.

For value for money it is hard to go past Cypress Lakes and with the saving made on iseekgolf.com you could not ask for a better day of golf. There was a bit of a lineup at the starter with the Christmas comp on but the course Marshall had the good sense to allow us to go off the tenth and we had an uninterrupted round.

Al-in-all it was an excellent day, great golf and picked up a cheeky box of 2009 brokenwood graveyard Shiraz on the way out.

Played Sunday morn Nov 27.
In fairness to the staff and green keepers hard to make fair judgement due to the amount of rain we had the previous 3-4days.
Rain backed off the Friday night of our long weekend away with Saturday clearing up and some sun by midday so the course was starting to dry off but we passed by the course Saturday for a look and noticed it was closed it was that water logged….
Course was open Sunday with our arrival of 7.30am for 8am hit off but the place was in koas being the Sat comp naturally having been called off put off for Sunday.
This was a real turn off first off for having played the course before its changes and experienced good times I had pumped up my 3other playing partners we were going to enjoy this game but after being advised comp was starting up not long after our tee off and all tees fully loaded it was a real let down having to be rushed.
We had to tee off from the 14th due to the comp so to say we weren’t prepared is an understatement.
Having swallowed our bitter pill we got on with our game and even though it was a bit wet under the foot at times I still enjoyed getting on the tees and get on with it, some challenging tees as I recall from the past and fairways in fair shape, some greens not as green top as you’d expect but some good turn on them, due to the rain some greens were faster than others but challenging none the less.
Bunkers were GUR – pools of water so as I mentioned hard to make an overall judgement of the course but knowing how it could be I still rate the place – test’s your shot making and once the wind picks up certainly gets you going back to the bag grabbing a club up.
Staff unfortunately under the pump as mentioned and no doubt could have handled us better thats what the real let down was for no one could have got the course in top nick after what mother nature delivered the previous days.
The 3 rating is purely based how the course was due to the heavy rain the previous days that any course cannot recover within 24hrs of rain finally letting off.

Played the course twice as we travelled to the Hunter Valley for a boys golf weekend.Overall not a bad course, but is in need of some work-lots of weeds around fringe of greens and on fairways.Greens were fury on the Friday and then on Sat, some greens were mowed and others hadnt seen the mower .Bunkers were overall poor-some were clay pots others hadnt been raked since the dawn of time and some were doubling up for Kangaroo homes! Holes from 14 onwards were much better ,except for the mower boy on hole 17 who thought it appropriate to keep mowing the fairway as we waited for him to stop, and in the end we teed off hoping not to hit him.Unfortunatley he continued to mow only a few metres away as we hit our 2nd shot. Then again as we were putting ,mowerboy was there mowing the fringes. Just a little distracting.Other than mowerboy the staff were great and friendly. We also played Vintage,Hunter Valley golf club and Magenta Shores, and the general consenus was that Vintage was far the best course in terms of presentation, friendliness of staff and course layout.

Played there today with 2 mates,14 november 2011 40 degrees westerly wind whcich kept a lot of the water carries very testing. Due to the wind it was also difficult to find your ball due to leaves and bark everywhere, but then again if you managed to stay on fairways it was easier. A better course the second time as I now know some of the holes. It is a thinking persons course. Would have been much better if I could putt on the greens they were true I was not. I play Belmont Newcastle area and the greens there are super quick. We have already agreed to come back again. Love some of the bunker placements and the water carries.

Played Cypress Lakes 7 Oct, 2011. This is a challenging and enjoyable course to play on. Plenty of holes that need some thought as the green may not be in view, which requires some interesting decisions to be made on what shot you should play of the tee and from some fairways.

Great Course, Really enjoyed it. Although way to much thick clover on the fringes of the fairway. To many lost balls.
Would definitley go back for another hit.

My son and I had a fantastic game with the course in sensational order and the staff we encountered on the day being very friendly.
It was my son’s first time around cypress lakes and he can’t wait to return, he loved the layout and he was very impressed with the greens which were in first class condition.

Special $55 deal good value. Friendly staff. Suggest shorter rough close to fairways. A good drive too often results in a ball lost in thick clover.

Played here 12/9/11. Great layout, interesting mix of holes. Would have been nice to see the original 12th in play (still stop for a photo). Still a challenge as a 200m par 3 downhill from the tips. There are a few blind tee shots due to the elevation change which adds to the challenge.

Fairways were a little dry in places but adequate coverage. The greens could be something special this summer. When we played they were still a little soft due to recent coring.

All bunkers were in great condition with a good cover of sand.

I’d highly recommend this course. Anyone who hasnt liked it in the past should give it another go. I hope you play off the back bottles (tees) and the wind blows. It’s a great test of your golfing ability.

With the petrol carts the sloping paths are easily managed.

We played vintage, hunter then cypress. If cypress was in a little better condition (fairways), I would have a hard time not rating it better than the vintage due to it’s interest level. Either way the hunter valley golf course is a very distant 3rd.

Played there Sunday 14th of August 2011 in a social tournament with mates and found the course to be in great condition. Pro staff were accomadating and the drinks cart was always close by.
Greens were quick and the fairway’s / tee boxes in good condition.
Must Play while at the Hunter Valley !!

A special thank you to Merv and Emma for organising our day.

The "MEX CUP" is sure to return next year

Hi I played golf here on the last weekend in July and could not believe how good the greens were. I had heard so many bad things and was pleasently surprised. The Proshop were helpful and speed of play was ok for a resort course on a weekend. Would really reccomand playing here again if you were un happy last time

Played here 7/6/2011 and was disappointed. This course ranks third of the big three hunter valley courses. I played here many years ago and the course was much better than now. The course plays heaps shorter than before and the course overall tired. If you are going to the hunter for a round choose the vintage or crown plaza.

Played here on the weekend. Sadly, it is not the course it used to be.

I remember the 12th being a fantastic and challenging par 4 but arrived to see it is now a 150m par 3. Shame.

The course was not good bad but not particularly impressive. Nice club house and views but fairway/green are just average. I played aroud 7AM and a green man was watering and they never stopped. All my putting were on wet greens. They should stop watering while playing.

Good course, but definitely glad we didn’t pay more than the $65 online special. With all the leaves over this course, it is over-rated. Relatively challenging for a fairly new player, but over-rated for the price.

I am a local to the region and had not played here in approx 10 years and decided to give it another shot. Played in Saturday comp and green fees seemed very pricy. Conditioning has gone downhill dramatically since I played it last. We had experienced recent rain however the bunkers were rutted out and full of water and had clay bases (most were unplayable), the greens were dreadfully slow, the cart paths resemble a 4WD training course and there is about 5-6 different grass types scattered throughout the course (depending on what hole you are playing). We were supposed to play in a 4 but the starter messed things up meaning we were left playing in a 2 and had to play through a group. Bar also had massively inflated prices to add salt to the wound when the round was completed. Next time I will head down the road to the Vintage or Crown Plaza.

The Cypress Lakes course was playing very well with some of the best views from the tees that you will find. Some of the greens were a little slow which probably saved me from have a poorer round since I had some trouble reading the slope on a few greens. I find Cypress Lakes to one of the more challenging putting courses in the Hunter Valley. It was only a few weeks after coring so I would expect the greens to get quicker over the next month or so. A word of warning, if you don’t get your drive away well, you will struggle on this course to get a good score.

I have to disagree with some of the other recent reviewers who have written that the course is in poor condition. To the contrary, the course is on the way back to its best. Following some issues with the greens in recent years, they are now in good condition and getting better. Yes they are a little on the slow side (at least slower than I would prefer), but this is easily rectifed and undoubtedly will be over the coming months. As a resort course, Cypress Lakes must offer’something for everyone’, but when played from the back tees it still represents a thorough test of golf. A weekend spent playing The Vintage and Cypress Lakes is still the best weekend of golf to be had in the Hunter Valley. If you haven’t been to cypress Lakes in awhile give it a try – it might surprise you.

This course proved a major dissapointment when i played there recently. I haven’t played there in 10 years and the decline in condition was remarkable. Maybe due to the fact that the Vintage and HV G&CC are now established in the area. The layout is still magnificent but the course condition was one that I expected from a $20 a round course not a $90 a round one. The greens were long and slow, the fairways were in need of grass and a water and the general upkeep of the gardens etc left a lot to be desired. I drove into the large right hand bunker on the 18th only to find it covered in rocks reminding me of an excavation site. This course has so much potential but has been let down by poor upkeep.

Played 2 weeks ago with a mate.

Yup, the greens cost us both multiple shots which was disapointing. The other problems there at the time were due to the ammount of wet weather recently, however saying that, the fairways were pretty good and seemed to have drained well. But the greens were a mess.

Cypress lakes is a great course with fantastic fairways, tees and bunkers. It is occasionally let down by some greens but only a couple. This course has some of the best views from tees that you’ll ever see and it is also pretty reasonable. It is one of the most enjoyable courses i have ever played on

As noted by numerous correspondents before me, the greens are currently a mess. Playing a chapionship course at $100.00 per round you expect better.
Apart from that, our 4 Ball thoroughly enjoyed the challenge of the round.
Only other thing that annoyed us was the infrequency of the refreshment cart(s). Teed off at 9.00am, and saw the cart three times on the first 5 holes, – then not again until the 15th! It was a hot day (30deg C), so we were really hanging out for a cool drink by the time they found us again!

The golf course is layed out very nicely and there are some good risk/reward options, especially from the tee. But the greens were terrbile, genuinely amongst the worst I have played. The grass is almost gone from several, and others are on their way out. There was one temporary green and one which was completely sand covered and frankly a joke. It was a real disappointment considering the price of the green fees. If we had just paid the green fee and not got an accommodation package I would have been looking for some compensation.

Also the sand in the bunkers differed from one hole to the next. There was no consistency in type or depth. Many looked like they were filled with building sand and had large rocks clearly visible.

With better conditioning I would give a 4 star rating, but don’t expect that to happen any time soon. Those greens are in serious trouble.

Generally the service at the resort was fine with one or two exceptions.

Course is interesting and challenging but in pretty poor condition—particularly greens.Accommodation would be fine if not so expensive.
Also—had to ask for a plug for b’room basin and spa bath;a friend whom we’d invited to dinner was told we were not booked in until she insisted that she knew we were, and was then given misleading directions to our villa.Only food available for dinner was in bar/bistro—poor quality, overpriced,to say nothing of $35 for cheapest bottle of Chardonnay which was akin to a cleanskin priced at $4.99 at Liqourland!!No wonder Cypress Lakes is in receivership.

Played here late September ’09 for the first time & I must say I was not Impressed. Every green was either cored, smothered in sand or had sprinklers on. Understand this is necessary for the greens but we did not find out until we went to putt on the 1st green, nor we given a discount, might aswell of gone to a driving range. Earthmmovers, greenskeepers & even trucks on nearly every hole aswell. As for the layout, what is the go with the pin-placements?? Fairways satisfactory, bunkers hurrendous (not turned, grass growing out of them) Only way I can describe some of the cart paths is dangerous.
I’d expect this sought of thing from your average small-town local course but not from a place that prides itself on being first class.
If going to Pokolbin I highly recommend Vintage & Crown Plaza (HVGCC) ove this place.

Played here a couple of weeks ago. Played off the very back tees and it was tough in the wind. Some very long holes and a really nice part of the world to play golf. The greens had been cored two weeks previous which spoiled it a bit but all in all its a great course and seemed to be friendly and well run. I would love to play it again when the greens are better.

Played Cypress lakes yesterday morning. Course was in mint condition, weather was perfect and there was no one in front or behind. Couldn’t ask for a better day out. Challenging course with some tough tee positions. Alot of tricky greens and plenty of sand surrounding nice tight farways. Some of the tee views are postcard worthy(vineyard/lake back drops).

Great Course.

A fair bit over-rated. Very difficult, mostly because of some bizarre tee positions, and fairway designs. Plus tons of bunkers, which is fairly one-dimensional as a way to make a course difficult.

If the course isn’t difficult enough, hurtling down 45 degree slopes in the cart can’t exactly help your heart-rate for your next shot!

PROS

Cons

  • Some incredibly difficult and bizarre tee setups

Knocked it round Cypress Lakes a couple of times over the Australia Day long weekend, first time since the re-routing. Better lay out now with the long water carry tee shot now the 14th (formally the 1st) and the new 1st a reachable par 5. There’s enough scoring holes to keep the mid handicapper interested and enough tuffies to ruin the card of the best players.

To my mind, Cypress Lakes is an excellent golf course all up. The layout is superb and the organisation of a recent corporate day that we held at Cypress was outstanding in every aspect. Previous reviewers have highlighted the natural beauty of the course and truth be told, they are spot on as the property offers some of the prettiest scenry that I have experienced when playing golf(mind you, the Vintage offers excellent scenery too)!

Unfortunately, there are one or two minor things that let Cypress down but these are only very small nit-picks. Some of the cart-paths are old and in need of repair. The older ones made for quite a bumpy ride. Also, some of the bunkers seemed to be quite different to others both in feel and in quality/texture of the sand. These are the only two things that prevent me giving Cypress a full five stars, however, for me this course is a 4.5/5 course.

Taking into account the luxury facilities, spa, villas and general atmosphere I would recommend Cypress Lakes to all golfers but especially to groups as the staff run the golf days in a very organised, professional manner.

Played here yesterday. Some lovely holes, including the #1 ranked par 4 on the back 9. An absolute stonker. However…. Pin placements were the worst I’ve ever seen on any half decent track. Most were on the sides of hills, which, for the mid range player trying to play an otherwise testing layout, to handicap, provides little reward for a solid putt (ending up some 10 feet past) Some pin placements were simply a joke. Staff were great. Course in top nick. Bar was ridiculously overpriced, 3 beers, 1 softdrink and a take away pie $31.

Great golf course in a majestic setting. Good mix of holes offering excellent views across the vineyards of the Hunter Valley. Cant wait to play the course again in the future as the Resort is excellent as well and offers an excellent array of facilities which I discovered through the Resort’s very user friendly web-site. Great contrast to some of the other courses in the area and offers some distinctive features including the wine bottle shaped tee markers which I loved as they continually reminded me of what would be in store after my round.

I had the extreme pleasure of playing Cypress Lakes last month. It must be admitted that it was the first time I played the course and did not really know what to expect as other reviews I have read were a little bit mixed. However, I am so so so happy that I played the course and had the opportunity to make up my own mind.

The golf course was in excellent conditions and I found the greens to be true and quite fast. The variety of holes at Cypress Lakes is great as I felt that it simply was not just the case of up and back playing very similar holes all the time. In my mind, I always find the best courses to play are the ones where the golfer loses track of where they are due to the continual changes in direction of the holes requiring the golfer to have a good array of shots in order to adapt to the varying wind conditions. Cypress Lakes is one of these courses.

I would especially like to mention the 2nd, 4th, 9th, 12 th, 13th and 18 th holes. These par fours were all excellent and certainly very challenging from the back tees, which we played on the day.

Finally, I would like to complement the pro-shop and catering staff for their excellent hospitality on the day we played. The staff at the pro-shop were very obliging from the moment we arrived to the moment we left. Also, it was great to see the drinks cart circulating regularly on a very warm day. I look forward to playing Cypress again and I will do this very soon. My recent move to the Northern Suburbs of Sydney has made the course very accessible as the drive is far shorter than I had previously imagined.

Now measuring 6487m Par 72 from the black tees and 6019m from the blues where I played it from. The 4 Par 5s are long -603m 16th from black tees is Australia's longest par 5 - and all seem a little different to each other, which is good. The 4 Par 3s are quite challenging to birdie let alone par, and offer elevated tees (11th, 15th) and great bunkering with a links feel (3rd, 5th).

The front nine is my favourite part of the course. I like the par 4s here, especially the 9th. There are an even amount of dogleg left and rights on the course (6 each) which challenges the golfer to shape the ball both ways.

Cypress Lakes has a few water hazards that come into play (2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, 9th, 14th, 17th). The hilly back nine has some blind shots, with luck with ball lie rewarding precision ball placement off the T.

Of the 3 resort courses in the area (Hunter Valley, The Vintage, Cypress Lakes) this is my least preferred, but still good course. Played all 3 on weekend of 16/17 December 2006.

This is the first time I have played at Cypress Lakes. The staff in the pro shop were obliging and courteous. A foursome had just started playing prior to my arrival, so the pro shop staff handed me a bucket of balls and sent me off to the practice fairway.

The course was challenging and in excellent condition. The greens were fast, requiring good control. I found the course provided a comprehensive test of my (limited) skills. Plenty of bunkers and some well placed water hazards provided for an entertaining afternoon.

I look forward to the opportunity to play this course again,

I played Cyrpess and The Vintage over a 2 day Hunter golf trip with a mate, and I still can't put them apart.

Cypress is an exciting course. Before you play Cyrpess searching the web site gives you an idea of the developers thoughts in buildign the layout.

Some holes provide 2 paths to approach the greens, and the front 9 is more of a resort layout while the back 9 provies a links layout.

Hazards are plentiful. Bunkering is great, and water hazards are all over the place. You actually begin at the par 5 1st needing to clear a 150m water hazard.

My favourite holes were the par 4 4th with 3 bunkers spliting the multi level fairway, the par 4 6th and index 1 par 4 8th, par 4 11th teeing off with the vineyards as a unique hazard, and the long 491m par 5 15th.

If you don't mind blind tee shots, elevated tees or greens, doglegs, exciting hazards, and exciting holes play Cypress - You'll love it!
