I assume you have made a typo and are referring to 9 being a shitheap and not 18 Peter Pan? If so, you are on the money

Probably one of the least spoken about sandbelt courses, Kingswood is definately a course to consider for those looking to make a step up from public or social golf.

The course has remained true to its original character except for the horrible changes that has left the club with holes 4 and 7. Remove these and you have a nice little track that has elements of courses rated much higher than it, including Woodlands. However, they are there and will continue to drag the course sown the ratngs until both are sorted with a barrage of earth moving equipment and a good architect

The green complexes are in the main interesting and the routing provides enough interest without it being overly difficult or unique.

The wonderful new front gate must make the local Dingley crowd very proud, and the older clubhouse is a nice place to have a relaxing beer on the porch after a round. Experienced members usually play in the morning due to the noise coming from the bar after lunch making tee shots on 1 and 10 a little noisy

The starters hut is rarely used but like Spring Valley, is a nice little nic nak

The club recently dug an ASR system could allow the Club to store up to 25 million litres of water a year, effectively increasing its water supply for irrigation by almost 50 per cent. Any water problems should be a thing of the past should the trials prove successful

We also like the extra hole that should stay permanent and they can alternate between 4 and 7 as the hole out of play.

One wonders what would have happened if the board had taken up Mr Williams offer for a land swap and new course where the Capital now lies. One also wonders whether it is still a prime target for property development given the amount of club competition in the area.

Anyhow, I have always enjoyed my hits at Kingswood (except for 4 and 7)…until of course you get to 18, and see possibly the worst bunker complex in Melbourne.

I like Kingswood

Measures 6082m Par 72 with four par 3s ranging from 130-180m, ten par 4s ranging from 280-409m and four par 5s ranging from 470-504m. Course is in superb condition. Greens are quick and run smoothly, fairways are good not overly wide but allows a slightly errant shot to still find the fairway, the teeboxes are lush and flat. If you can manage…stay away from the trees…

Some weak par 3s but some very good bunkering keeps your ego in check. Some of the short par 4s – the 333m 1st, 304m 7th, 280m 10th and 322m 17th plays a little different with perhaps an iron off the tee to set up a low score.

Highlights include:

  • 367m 8th (index 3) with water along the right from tee to green, to a widish fairway landing area, bunker short right and a deep greenside left trap with water over the back of the green.
  • 409m 9th (index 1) with 3 fairway bunkers right with a bunker 40m short right with 3 large greenside bunkers guarding a green which slopes rear to front.
  • 395m 11th (index 2) with OOB homes on the left, fairway bunkers on the right with a slight uphill 2nd shot to a tiered green sloping from rear to front guarded by 2 bunkers short left.
  • 504m 16th (index 8) plays slightly uphill with 3 fairway bunkers left, fairway narrows from about 250-260m from the tee, trees left and right to negotiate on your 2nd shot to a green guarded by bunkers left and right.

Played here on the 5 August 2010 open day and paid $60 competition fees. Great bunkering, not overly long with a more picturesq (and challenging) back nine.

As an interstate golfer, I will always remember the windy and wet day I played Kingswood – the first course I have played on the sandbelt. Highly recommended.

Was a member for many years but hadn’t played there since the redevelopment so was keen to go back. I always rated the course the equal to many of the more famous sand belt courses, even after the somewhat controversial redevelopment not much has changed, granted a couple of the new holes don’t quite fit the rest of the course they are not as bad as some people let me to believe. Its still a great course with some of the best greens you could ever play.

Plenty lay claim to being the hidden sandbelt gem but Kingswood deserves the title. The course condition was fantastic and the greens were the truest and fastest combination I’ve been on in a while.

A great combination of long and shortish par 4’s and although the 5’s aren’t enormously long, they do put a premium on hitting to the right spot.

Yes the front nine was redesigned and yes they could have done a better job but apart from the 2 par three’s and the 7th the rest of the course is of the highest class even when you take into account the other sandbelt courses. The condition of the course is without a doubt better then most (if not all) of its sandbelt brothers and sisters and that is a big claim. It is a true test of your skills too and you have to be straight of the tee and putt well to score well here.

Excellent course. Conditioning is better than any course in the area and some of the nicest greens in Melbourne.

The back nine is sensational and is a tough test of golf.

Was not in the top 100 courses last time around but should be in the top 50 and how they overlooked this I do not know.

Absolute gem of a course. Freindly helpful staff and a great corporate sponsorship package on offer.

This was once a very good course. Until about 5 years ago when along came a designer with an ego bigger than his cardigan drawer who mangled more than half of the front nine. Appalling stuff. A real shame for the club. The two par 3’s on the front nine are amongst the worst holes in Melbourne, only surpassed by the sheer stupidity and woeful design of the new 7th hole.

A lovely club atmosphere however and a breeding ground for some excellent professional golfers. Conditioning usually very good. Just ask to play the back nine twice.
