Kooralbyn was the first golf resort built in Australia and it is widely known as being one of the most natural golf courses in the country.

Since 1986 it has been included in every National rating list and there’s good reason as the course offers a superb combination of challenging holes with dramatic views of some of Australia’s genuine landscape.

It was the timeless piece of virgin country that inspired Scottish golf architect, Desmond Muirhead, to create this masterpiece, a legacy for all golfers to enjoy.

Played the course this morning for the first time. My first impression was the whole club house and course looks very tired, as in nothing has been spent on maintenance for years.

Despite recent floods in the area and all the dams on the course being full, the course was very dry, and brown.

I thoroughly enjoyed the design and layout of the course and it truly is bloody tough and unforgiving. However the condition of this supposed top 25 ranked course was woeful! The fairways were cut so low it was like hitting off a concrete for nearly every shot. Due to this the fairways were rock hard and dry with many sizeable bare patches. The greens had a fair amount of other weed grass growing throughout and once again a heap of bare patches. This made putting very inconsistent on what appear to be great greens.

The cart paths around the course are more potholed than a Brisbane road. Although minor in the scheme of things was just another example of the lack of course maintenance.

$58.50 is a fair price for this course if in good condition however $30 at the moment would be too much.

I played the course with great expectation, however I walked away with a very disappointed feeling as the layout truly is outstanding, it’s just the condition which ruined it.

Just played Kooralbyn this morning. Upon arrival the course looked very dry depite recent rainfalls. This is the first time playing the course. We found the layout to be incredibly challenging and enjoyable, however the condition of the course was disappointing. The fairways were cut far too short with massive bare patches in the middle of the fairway. Greens were unpredictable with many weeds and bare patches. The overall appearance of the course was rundown. If the course was in good condition would come back for $58 but would never pay $85 for it. Currently not worth $58.

played this course in august 07. went on a trip with sum ppl from our club. stayed overnight played 2 rounds. tough course but the greens were of a poor standard. tough to score well it just lacked some grass coverage in places which just left me a bit flat. it has probably greened up since then but it is definintley worth a play.

We had a play and stay weekend at the resort and played a round early on the Saturday morning. The new 1st was a little confusing and we actually hit over to the 18th fairways as we were unsure where to go.

Apart from that the course was a pleasure – plenty of bunkers and water so you need to be straight. The whole course was looking great after plenty of recent rain and the fairways were well cared for and lush. Greens were challenging and very fast but read true. Some of the bunkers were a little compacted and hard and a bit more sand would make exiting easier. The Par threes here were a highlight for me – all spectactular and challenging, as was the new 18th – talk about target golf with bunkers and water protecting the final green.

Scenery on the course is fantastic with bird like and wallabies abundant. The accommodation was adequate and I agree with the last reviewer will be improved with completion of the renovations. The buffet breakfast sets you up perfectly for the round, and the ice filled esky on the carts was a great touch.

All in al we had a great weekend and will be back.

I played Kooralbyn last month. The course has really been improved with the new 1st and 18th holes. It was in great condition and is bloody hard. They are looking after the course and it is getting back to the course of old. If you are venturing down that way it is well worth the effort now. I played there two years ago and was very reluctant to go back but I am pleased I did. Would recommend this course. It is narrow and long but if your golf is bad the walk and scenery is just as entertaining. The accommodation is undergoing an upgrade and while it was OK I am sure it will be better after the renos.

I am a member of Kooralbyn Valley Golf Club and over the past 6 months the course has gone ahead in leaps and bounds. The improvements include a new fleet of Club Car golf carts, new and challenging 1st and 18th Holes, new green staff that I believe have performed minor miracles on the greens in the short time they have been here. I believe that Kooralbyn would be the most naturally beautiful golf course in Sth East Queensland. The new 18th hole at Kooralbyn would also be the hardest par 4 I have ever played and arguably one of the toughest in Queensland. So I know Kooralbyn has had a bad reputation in the past but it has definately improved dramatically over the last few months. Now is the time to have a round aswell with the large amount of water at Kooralbyn at the moment and the very good stay and play packages that they offer.

Our group stayed and played in December 2006.

At the time the resort was also occupied by a very large group of men on a staff xmas outing. They were rough, loud and extremely drunk. The pool area was littered with glassware and the bad language and yahooing echoed across the resort.

The accomodation would have been better if the cleaners were introduced to BLEACH AND AJAX. The 'spa bath' in our room had a fuzzy, dirty ring in it and the taps were thick with mould. Also no one in our group was game to use the tacky 'shared' soap/shampoo dispensers that anyone could tamper with for future visitors.

We also had a bad experience with the pro shop. The staff was extremely inexperienced in the organising of the competitions.

And to top it off there were problems in the bistro. We had to continually return items to the staff, because something tasted very 'wrong'. Even diners around us commented that they had the same problem.

I've played here once a year for the past six years and have seen it deteriorate. Things are certainly changing for the better. The course is in great condition and there are some excellent "Stay and Play" packages available. It now feels more like a Golf Resort than a hotel with a seperate golf course. There is a new fleet of carts so some of the comments below are not applicable now. GO, PLAY, ENJOY!

I was hesitant heading out to Kooralbyn, having read some rough reviews.

I was pleasantly surprised by the course. Okay, so it's DRY at the moment, and that was a definite negative. But the layout was great! Very challenging, and quite creative (4th hole approx. 200m par 3 was brilliant!). If i didn't have to drive so far to get there, I'd play more often.

All in all, a good day on an interesting course.

Once a great course, now average. If it has rained recently go, if not don't.

I have played and enjoyed Kooralbyn Valley many times over the last 15 years. Kooralbyn is a well designed course in a wonderful bush setting, however the management has allowed this once great track to fall into poor condition.

Our group of 8 stayed for the weekend expecting to be able to play 18 holes each day. On the Saturday our tee time was delayed by 30 minutes (shortage of carts) and when our carts did arrive, one cart in our first group broke down before reaching the 1st green and was replaced. The two carts we had in the second group had to be pushed to the 2nd tee! These were replaced and this cart replacement process continued until we ran out of light 5 hours later on the 14th hole. We had pushed the carts on many holes and carried our bags on others. By the 14th hole our two groups had utilised ten different carts.

With regard to the course, before teeing off we commented to each other on how bad the practice green was only to find the course greens were in similar or worse condition. We could only dream of times past when Kooralbyn greens were legendary. The whole course generally presented in a neglected state.

We did get 18 holes in on Sunday with only three carts breaking down.

Management acknowledged our complaint and gave us a very small discount on our total bill, but our golfing weekend had already been ruined.

Kooralbyn is is one of the most pituresque natural locations for a golf course in the country. So nice in fact, we still had a great day despite a multitude of poor shot selections that resulted in generous donations to both the golfing gods and the Jungle gods. On another day, my clubs may have disappeared into the lake on the par 3 17th as I watched my 3 iron make it across the water carry only to hit a rock on the other side and come flying back toward us and into the water (my mates saw the funny side of it but).

Such is Kooralbyn. Tricky greens that have seen better days (they need a bit of attention and so do the tee boxes), lots of hills and undulations, narrow fairways although a few of them do funnel poor shots nicely back to the middle, lots of water but mostly, gorgeous scenery all the way around.

The post card hole is the par 3 5th. Wow, too hard to describe, see it for yourself. Don't expect to beat your handicap the first time around but I guarantee you that you will enjoy the experience.

Whilst the Kooralbyn resort itself is a little dated, the course was in great condition considering the serious lack of rain over the past few months.

Unlike most Queensland resort courses, Kooralbyn is carved out of the bush and offers you a real taste of the Australia landscape.

Stunning views and amazing wildlife characterise this superb course and its combination of tricky par 3ís, and some long Par 4ís offers challenging golf for all standards.

Fairways were a somewhat bare in places but the greens were true and slick making for some interesting uphill putts particularly on the 2nd and 6th. One of the ladies in our four ball took 4 attempts to get onto the top tier green on the 6th.

Without doubt the most spectacular hole on the course is the par 3, 5th. The blue gums provide a breathtaking backdrop for your tee shot and the thrill of seeing your ball fly the full 220 meters downhill is amazing.

Sadly it was this signature hole that showed Kooralbyn as a course with much to do in terms of etiquette. Whilst my party was putting out, a two ball decided to tee off with one of their shots landing only 10 meters from my playing partner. On letting the party behind play through on the next tee, not even an apology was offered by the gentlemen sporting NRL rugby shirts, non-tailored shorts and training shoes!

I understand that Kooralbyn was rated one of the best courses in Australia in its early years and this is not surprising with such outstanding beauty and fabulous design. I think however that Kooralbyn needs to pay a little more attention to the enforcement of the etiquette of the game if they want to recapture some of their past glory. A number of misdemeanors including 6 people in the same group; 2 players with only one set of clubs and a very loud man on his mobile phone while I was teeing off suggested that Kooralbyn was more interested in taking your green fees than providing a total golfing experience.

8/10 for the course but please lose the golf hoons!

Kooralbyn Valley Golf club is situated out past Beaudesert.

I have visited the club on a number of occasions. It is a challenging course with scenic views. It is one of the best courses I have visited, If not the best!
