The Heritage Golf & Country Club (Henley)

IN: COURSE DIRECTORY | REGION: Yarra Valley & Dandenongs, VIC | USER RATING: (4.5) | Add A Review

Designed by Tony Cashmore (in consultation with Jack Nicklaus) The Henley will be created in the style of a traditional links course, and will prove equally as challenging as the St John course.

The Henley Course will also be vastly different to the beautifully manicured and presented St John course. There will be wildness out there in Henley, broad undulating green fairways set in the fawns and mauves, greys and russets of wild grasses and wetlands.

There will be few trees, rather copses of dark bushland, far from playlines, as backdrops to doglegs and green settings. The bunkers will be wild things as though the giant had twisted up gnarled roots and ripped them from the earth. And yet … there will be gentleness out there, and the joy of playing golf over a generous landscape, a course which will be sturdy, honest, exhilarating, constantly changing.

The first stage of construction will see basic civil engineering that will excavate the lake volumes and rough shape the golf course fairways as well as provide basic drainage. Of course, all of this will be done in accordance with stringent environmental management plans.

The next stage thereafter will involve sand capping, irrigation and fine shaping, which is the artistry involved in interpreting the golf course designer?s intentions. The final stage is for growing in the grasses and landscape.

Tony Cashmore has an outstanding reputation for having designed some of Australia’s top links courses, including The Dunes and the new 13th Beach.

Very nice course unless you don’t like water. Always in fantastic condition. A challenge from the back tees but worth playing them at least once.

Played Henley several times now and the more recently constructed holes have improved dramaticaly since being opened 6 months too soon. Given a wet winter it should be awesome in November! The layout is amazing in its own right and very different from the established St John. A course that demands a lot of thought, not simply long hitting. 18 sensational holes (6353m) ranging from tricky 122m Par 3, a 468m Par 4 to two of the toughest closing holes in golf anywhere. Big, firm contoured green are very challenging. The very dry conditions mean the rough is not well developed, likewise with a lot of the decorative areas, but given a little time it will be an absolute picture. Beware there is also highly accessible water on no less than 8 holes. Don't forget to stop and take in the view on the 15th and 16th.
